  • This study was conducted to investigate the effect of chlorine dioxide fumigation as a substitute for sulfur fumigation which has been used as a method to prevent the quality change of persimmon during storage and distribution process. Dried persimmons were treated with chlorine dioxide gas concentration (0, 15 30, and 45 ppm) and time (0, 15, 30, and 45 min) and microbiological changes, texture properties and color of the treated samples were investigated during storage at room temperature. Total aerobic bacteria, yeast and mold numbers after chlorine dioxide gas fumigation were decreased when compared with the control group. The inhibitory effects of total aerobic bacteria, yeast, and mold were observed during storage. The texture properties and color value of dried persimmons were not affected by chlorine dioxide gas fumigation concentration and time. There was no difference in quality between chlorine dioxide gas fumigation treatment group and control group. These results suggested that chlorine dioxide gas fumigation treatment can be utilized as a processing technique to secure microbiological storage stability of dried persimmons.

  • Occurrence and soil fumigation effect on black root rot of peony was investigated. Peony was severely infected to black root rot caused by Cylindrocarpon destructans in continuous cropping field, but in first cropping field was less infected. To control black root rot, soil improvement, soil fumigation and the root dipping in chemicals were trialed in peony continuous cropping field. Black root rot was not decreased by soil improvement, but incidence of black root rot of peony cultivated in continuous croping field of peony was decreased by soil fumigation with Dazomet GR. and dipping of peony root in chemicals.

  • Fumigation of onion bulbs with Tetrachloroisophthalonitrile reduced weight loss by half of the control. The weight losses of the control onion bulbs stored at 80% RH were lower than those stored at 90% RH but no significantly different in case of fumigated onion bulbs. No rooting and sprouting to outside were detected during low temperature storage ($0^{\circ}C$) and $Q_{10}$ value of onion bulbs during storage was the range of 1.9-2.1. The weight losses of onion bulbs during storage were mainly due to decay rather than respiration, because there was positive correlation between weight loss and decay rate during storage period but not respiration ratio.

  • This is a brief study on the influence of fumigation (using mixed gas of methyl bromide and ethylene oxide) on old paintings. Fumigation is principally used to prevent biological damage of objects. Thirteen objects, including old colored map from Chosǒn Dynasty and some paintings, were selected for this research. Before and after fumigation, color measurements were made and changes of pH value were measured. The result is that the fumigation did not affect on discoloration of colored area and acidity of paper, as far as the standard of application(such as concentration of gas, exposing time and ect.) of fumigation was kept.

  • Comparative effects of gamma irradiation and methyl bromide (MBr) fumigation on disinfestation and some physicochemical attributes of acorn seeds were investigated. Insects in domestic acorns were identified to be Curculio dentipes Roelofs and Dichocrocis punctiferalis Guenee, which were easily disinfestated immediately after commercial MBr fumigation. Irradiation also showed similar effects on mortality of the insects in different post-irradiation periods; at 3rd day with doses of 1-3 kGy and at around 30th day 0.5-1 kGy. MBr fumigation caused the decrease in lightness (Hunter L value), total phenolics and reducing sugars and the increase in yellowness (Hunter b value) and browning intensity for the subjected samples, as compared with the nontreated control and irradiated ones at 0.5-2 kGy. Furthermore, MBr fumigation resulted in decay for the most part of samples during storage at 5-10 $^{\circ}C$ for 6 months in a PVC box packaging with nets. As a result, optimum levels of irradiation is expected to be roe of the alternatives to chemical fumigants.

  • Cyanoacrylate fuming mehod is effective for latent fingerprints developing on non-porous surfaces. In this study, we investigated optimal conditions for latent fingerprint development using cyanoacrylate fuming method in vacuum chamber. The effects of temperature, relative humidity, fuming method and processing time were checked throughly. The amount of evaporated cyanoacrylate was increased at higher temperature, but cyanoacrylate polymerization on the fingerprint ridge was best at $30^{\circ}C$. With a relative humidity of 40% to 50% conditions, good quality of fingerprints were developed. If a relative humidity is lower than 30% or higher than 60%, polymerization rate of cyanoacrylate monomers on the fingerprint ridge was decreased. It was identified that application of $OMEGA-PRINT^{TM}$ dispersal pad or cotton ball with sodium hydroxide fuming method in vacuum chamber was more effective than natural fuming method. We found that cyanoacrylate processing time in vacuum chamber did not have more significant than relative humidity.

  • Comparative effects of ethylene oxide and gamma radiation treatment of the microbiological and physicochemical qualities of ground garlic and onions were investigated. The standard ethylene oxide cycle employed was substantially less effective in reducing microbial counts than were 7 and 10 kGy of gamma radiation, and was roughly comparable to 5 kGy. Effects of gamma radiation on pungency, nutrient and color were relativey small in comparison with ethylene oxide which adversely affected physicochemical properties. Sensory evaluation indicated that no significant difference was observed between the nontreated control group and 10 kGy irradiated smaples.

  • An electronic nose was applied to analyze the aroma patterns of powdered red ginseng that had been treated with different preservative methods, such as gamma radiation at 5kGy, commercial methyl bromide (MeBr) and phosphine fumigations. Aroma patterns of phosphine or MeBr, fumigated samples were well separated according to storage temperature and period. However, 5kGy-irradiated samples (stored for 1 and 2 months) were hardly discriminated by the different storage temperatures ($25^{\circ}C$ and $-10^{\circ}C$). After 5 months at $-10^{\circ}C$, non-treated and phosphine fumigated samples showed similar aroma patterns.

  • Methyl Bromide that was used as fumigation gas turned out to be the substance of destroying the ozone layer. For that reason, at the Montreal Protocol in 1987 the use of methyl bromide was forbidden starting 2005 in the advanced country. Also according to the 2007 Bali Protocolly methyl bromide is expected to be forbidden and therefore the purpose of this study is to find out the effects of substitution fumigation gas (Ethylene Oxide+HFC 134a, Methyl Iodide, Cyanogen and Argon) on the metal(silver, copper and iron), wood(oregon pine), pigment(yellow, red, blue, white and black), textile(hemp, ramie, jute, silk1 and silk2 / indigo, safflower and cork) and paper. After the fumigation test, ethylene oxide+HFC 134a did not have changes in the weight and color of the material itself before and after the experiment. On exterior alteration, color change occurred partly on paper and metal. Also, in most materials color change extent was 0.5 to 1.5 on the average and showed scanty difference. The materials after the fumigation test with methyl iodide did not show weight changes after the test. However, color changes more than 1.0 was shown in most of the materials especially in dyed textile material. In blue pigment, the discoloration on the surface could be seen by naked eyes. Fumigation test with cyanogen gas did not show weight changes and discoloration is more than 1.5 before and after the test. The weight changes of test materials with the argon gas was decreased about 3 to 6%. It can be observed that discoloration on paper was generated. Color changes can be seen on jute dyed with safflower and cork for two weeks with argon gas and the extent was 6.3 and 6.0.
