대한민국을 넘어 세계를 긴장시켰던 연평도 포격사건의 후유증이 채 가시지 않은 지난해 12월, 한국건강관리협회에 특별 임무가 내려졌다. 다름 아닌 연평도 주민들의 건강상태를 우리 협회가 꼼꼼하게 점검하는 것. 전쟁을 방불케 하는 현장에서 상처받았을 그들의 몸과 마음을 어루만지고자 자발적으로 꾸려진 자원봉사단이 12월 4일, 인천의 한 찜질방을 찾았다.

지난 2010년 11월 28일 경북 안동에서 시작된 FMD는 2011년 초여름 까지 전라도와 제주도를 제외한 전국으로 확산되면서 축산 사료산업은 물론 관련 산업에까지 엄청난 피해를 가져왔으며, 지금도 그 후유증이 가시지 않은 상태에 있다. 이에 정부에서는 FMD가 소강상태로 접어들기 시작한 지난해 5월부터 고강도의 각종 방역대책을 내놓고 추진중에 있다. 이에 따라 본지는 그동안 정부가 내놓은 가축전염병 방역대책들과 사료업체의 방역관리 시스템에 대해 알아보고자 한다.

지뢰 제거에서 가장 중요한 요소는 지뢰의 탐지인데, 현재 이용되고 있는 장비들의 성능에는 나름대로 장.단점들이 있어 주로 미구기과 유럽에서 새로운 지뢰의 센서기술을 개발하려는 노력이 대단히 활발하게 이루어지고 있다. 캄보디아나 아프칸 등 전쟁 또는 내전의 후유증으로 제거되지 않고 방치된 무수히 많은 지뢰들에 의해 민간인들의 피해가 계속되자 UN을 중심으로 한 소위 '인도적 지뢰제거'(Humanitarian Demining)사업이 펼쳐지게 되면서 선진국을 중심으로 이 분야의 연구개발 예산이 늘어나기 시작하였다.

우리나라 의료보험 통계 결과 병원을 가장 많이 이용하는 질환 1순위는 바로 감기이다. 감기는 인류와 함께 진화되어 왔다고 해도 과언이 아닐 정도로 인간을 괴롭혀 온 가장 흔한 질환이지만, 뛰어난 현대의학으로도 정복하지 못하고 있는 가장 골치 아픈 문제이다. 자칫하면 폐렴, 중이염, 축농증, 기관지염 등 심각한 합병증이나 후유증을 유발할 수 있어서 예로부터 감기를 '만병의 근원'이라고 한다.

오늘 소개할 것은 여름철 대표 보양식 오리. 아직까지도 조류인플루엔자(AI)여파로 힘들어 하는 오리농가가 많은데 비 온 뒤 땅이 굳는다는 말이 있듯 더욱 더 철저한 관리사육으로 바쁜 나날을 보내고 있다는 전북 남원의 오리 사육농가를 찾아가 보았다. 조류인플루엔자 파동으로 아직까지 후유증이 남아 농가 사람들의 시름은 커져만 간다. 하지만 위기는 또 다른 기회라 하지 않던가? 위풍당당 오리가 나간다!

Bell's palsy is an acute-onset unilateral peripheral facial neuropathy. For patients with sequelae of facial paresis, the successful rehabilitation of fully edentulous arches is challenging. This case report described the treatment procedures and clinical considerations to fabricate complete dentures of a patient who showed unilateral displacement of mandible, unilateral chewing pattern and parafunctional jaw movement due to sequelae of Bell's palsy. Gothic arch tracing was used to record reproducible centric relation and lingualized occlusion was performed to provide freedom to move between centric relation and the patient's habitual functional area in fabricating satisfactory dentures in terms of function and esthetics.

The common causes of neck closed injuries are automobile accidents and sports troubles; open injuries are gun-shot wounds and stab wounds. Generally, the treatment of wide laryngopharyngeal injuries consists of tracheostomy for adequate airway, simple repair and, later, surgical intervention for chronic laryngeal stenosis and hypopharyngeal reconstruction. Recently, authors experienced a case of extensive communicated wound with large defect on the layngopharyngeal structures and anterior neck skin. This large defect was reconstructed with horizontal cervical skin flap after total laryngectomy.

Complications and sequelae of the laryngeal trauma are respiratory difficulties, edema or swelling, cellulitis or abscess, fistula, perichondrium and chondritis, chronic laryngeal stenosis, vocal cord paralysis, decannulation difficulty, and impaired voice production etc. Generally, the treatment of laryngeal injuries consists of initial tracheostomy for adequate airway and later surgical intervention for its complications and sequelae. Recently, authors experienced a case of closed laryngeal injury with thyroid cartilage fracture, left vocal cord paralysis, swallowing difficulty and right clavicular fracture owing to automobile accident. With reconstructive surgery for thyroid cartilage fracture, we established an adequate airway, improved swallowing function and better voice production.
