Margarite, which occurs in the Unkyori Formation of Miwon area, Chungcheongbukdo, South Korea, was investigated using the petrographic microscope, back-scattered electron images (BSEI), and electron probe microanalyzer (EPMA) to characterize the alteration textures and mineral chemistries. Most margarite crystals are inhomogeneous, and chlorite was commonly observed to occur at the boundaries parallel to the rim of margarite. Cracks occur across the basal plane of the margarite, and margarite is partly replaced by chlorite along the cracks. In additon, muscovite and biotite are intergrown in margarite and chlorite crystals, suggesting that margarite was partially altered to chlorite as well as to muscovite and biotite. Chemical analysis data show that paragonite solid solution in the margarite is approximately 19.6 mol%, but clintonite solid solution is negligible. Margarite crystals in the Unkyori Formation cut or penetrate other metamorphic minerals In the same thin sections and are oriented randomly without any relationship with the foliation of host rocks, indicating that formed as a secondary mineral after peak metamorphism. Furthermore, it seems that hydrothermal fluids associated with the Mesozoic intrusions developed near the sample are closely related to the margarite formation.
This paper presents a numerical simulation of the radar backscattering from oil spills on ocean surface. At first, a one-dimensionally rough sea surface is numerically generated for a given wind speed at HEBEI SPIRIT accident. Then, an oil-spilled sea surface is represented with a two-layered medium, which is generated by adding a thin low-dielectric oil layer on the randomly-rough highdielectric sea surface. The backscattering coefficients of various oil-spilled sea surfaces are obtained using the Method of Moments and Monte Carlo technique for various surface roughness, oil-layer thicknesses, frequencies, polarizations and incidence angles. The numerical method is verified with theoretical models for simple structures. The reduction of the backscattering coefficients due to the lowdielectric oil-layers on sea surfaces has been analyzed. These numerical results will help to detect any oil spills on sea surfaces, and consequently, to classify SAR images.
A series of the planar cathodoluminescence (CL) and backscattered-electron (BSE) images of magmatic zircon from the Paleozoic Yeongdeok pluton in the southeastern Korean Peninsula were taken using a scanning electron microscope for a 3D reconstruction of internal zonation of zircon. Seven zircon crystals mounted in epoxy were serially polished with average $3{\mu}m$ thickness to their disappearance. Their 3D reconstruction of zonation was performed using the Volume Viewer function in the ImageJ software. The 3D oscillatory zoning pattern of zircon was apparently shown in all the analyzed crystals. This method can further be applied to zircon crystals of multiple growth histories as well as other geological materials.

This study aimed to recover native gold from the concentrate using microwave-nitric acid leaching and magnetic/hydro separation experiments. The insoluble-residue was filtered from leaching solution through microwave-nitric acid leaching experiment. As a result of the atomic absorption spectrometer(AAS) analysis of the filtered leaching solution, it was discovered that Au content was not eluted at all and it was observed from the back scattered electron(BSE) image that native gold was liberated in the insoluble-residue. When magnetic/hydro separation experiments were applied for the insoluble-residue, magnetic and non magnetic minerals were separtated from insoluble-residue. Magnetite was recovered from the magnetic minerals and as a result of applying the hydro separation experiment again for the non-magnetic mineral, native gold was recovered. The native gold was identified through the X-ray diffraction(XRD) analysis and BSE image.

A mineralogical study was made in order to identify the relationship between uranium content in groundwater and rock chemistry using core rocks recovered from the drilling holes for wells in the Daebo Granite areas. Uraniferous minerals are of primary origin and occur as inclusions in accessory minerals such as zircon, monazite, and xenotime. Since the uraniferous minerals are very small to be 1 ~ 2 $\mu$m in size, it is difficult to distinguish their mineralogical species precisely. The frequent presence of dissolution cavities or dissolved textures in the accessory minerals suggests that uraniferous minerals dissolved partially and contributed to the groundwater chemistry. Because there is no clear relationship between host rocks and groundwater for uranium concentration, mineralogical characteristics of uraniferous minerals, together with aqueous geochemical conditions favorable for uranium dissolution, could play important roles in groundwaster chemistry.
Margarite, occurring in an Unkyori Formation of Miwon area, Chungcheongbukdo, South Korea, was investigated using a high-resolution transmission electron microscope (HRTEM) to reveal the microstructural intergrowth textures of margarite. HRTEM images of margarite, which was previously confirmed to have intergrowth textures by petrographic microscope and back-scattered electron images, show that chlorite occurs as thin packets of layers interlayered within margarite crystals, and intercalated chlorite layers are intergrown irregularly in areas as a few hundred angstroms thick slabs or isolated chlorite unit layers. Margarite crystals observed by HRTEM consist of a well-ordered 2M polytype, and electron diffraction pattern shows no prominent streaking along the 001 (or $c^{*}$) direction, indicating that there is no significant stacking disorder in margarite. Intercalated extra brucite-like layers, which are approximately 5 $\AA$ thick, are observed locally within margarite crystals. Insertion of such extra brucite-like layer at the interlayer of margarite would result in a chlorite-like structure unit. (001) margarite layers are parallel to (001) of chlorite, and margarite layers are not extended from (001) of chlorite, indicating that margarite was apparently produced through a dissolution-precipitation mechanism.m.
Some Quaternary faults developed in the eastern block of the Ulsan fault are Gaegok 1, Gaegok 2, Singye, Madong, Wonwonsa and Jinhyeon faults, which are characterized by thin gouge and narrow cataclasitic tones. This study was performed to emphasize the role of mineral alteration and microtexture in response to hydrothermal alteration of fault gouges during fault activity, using XRD, EPMA, BSE (backscattered electron image), and K-Ar age dating methods. Alteration minerals in fault gouges were formed in the age range of $44.3\~28.9Ma$ by hydrothermal alteration attributed to fault activity. XRD results show that fault gouges consist predominantly of clay minerals, quartz and feldspars. Clay minerals formed in the gouge zones are mainly composed of smectite with trace chlorite, illite and kaolinite. The evidence to support the hydrothermal alteration of preexisting minerals due to fault activity are easily recognized at the host rocks in contact with gouges zones. Injected gouge and calcite veins indicate that they were originated from multiple deformation by repeated fault activity. Gouge with green or greenish grey color, for example Jinhyeon fault, contains higher $Al_2O_3$ and lower MgO and CaO compared to those with reddish color. Various colors of fault gouge are intimately related to the chemical compositions of main constituent mineral as well as mineral assemblage.
