  • A turbine stage consists of stators and rotors. The stator provides the required inlet flow conditions so that the rotor can produce the necessary power. Passing wakes generated from the trailing edge of the stator make an interaction with the rotor. In the present study, this flow mechanism is investigated using the numerical analysis. In case of a large gap distance between the stator and rotor, the flow can be solved independently. First, only the stator flow field is solved. Second, the rotor flow field is solved including the passing wake characteristics obtained from the stator analysis. The passing wake experiences the shearing as it approaches to the rotor blade leading edge. And it is chopped when it strikes the rotor blade. After that, the chopped wakes becomes the prolongation as it travels downstream. The flow according to the variation of the gap distance is also studied. Pressure jumps due to the passing wakes result in the pressure and lift loss and it gets stronger with the closer gap distance.

  • The aim of this study was to investigate the possibility of the skin-friction reduction by vortex control. A vortical system such as a horseshoe vortex, a hairpin vortex, and a wake region was induced around a hemisphere attached on a Perspex flat plate in the circulating water channel. Hairpin vortices were developed from the wake region and horseshoe vortices were formed by an adverse pressure gradient in front of the hemisphere. The horseshoe vortices located on the flank of the hemisphere induced a high momentum flow in the wake region by the direction of their vorticity. This process increased the frequency of the hairpin vortices as well as the frictional drag on the surface of the wake region. To reduce the skin-friction drag, suction control in front of the hemisphere was applied through a hole. Flow visualization was performed to optimize the free-stream velocity, size of the hemisphere, and size of the suction hole. Once the wall suction control mitigated the strength of the horseshoe vortex, the energy supplied to the wake region was reduced, causing the frequency of the hairpin vortex generation to decrease by 36.4 %. In addition, the change in the skin-friction drag, which was measured with a dynamometer connected to a plate in the wake region, also decreased by 2.3 %.

  • Multirotor configurations such as VTOL and urban air mobility have been focused on today due to the high maneuverability. Aerodynamic and aeroacoustic characteristics of multirotor have much difference to those of a single rotor. In this study, a numerical analysis based on the free wake vortex lattice method is used for identifying the wake interaction effect. In order to compare the various configurations and operating conditions, the effects of the spacing between the rotors in hovering flight and the effects of the advancing ratio and the formation in forward flight are discussed. In the hovering flight, the unsteady loading of multirotor changes periodically and loading fluctuation increases as decreasing the spacing. It causes the variation in unsteady loading noise and the noise directivity pattern. In the forward flight, the difference in loading fluctuation and noise characteristics are observed according to the diamond and square formation of rotors. By comparing with results of single rotor analysis, multirotor configurations have different directivity pattern and amplitude of loading noise according to the location of each rotor. As a result, wake interaction effect becomes a highly important factor for aerodynamic and aeroacoustic analysis according to multirotor configurations and operating conditions.

  • PSP (Pressure Sensitive Paint) technique can measure continuous pressure field by analyzing the oxygen quantity using optical method. The surface pressure of down stream after the sonic jet that injected transversely into the supersonic freestream was measured by PSP technique. Moreover the effect of various rectangular shaped cavities in front of the jet was measured by PSP technique. A comparison of the PSP results with conventional pressure tap and CFD indicates good agreement. The result shows that the cavity affects the pressure distribution in the rear of the jet injection.

  • A potential based panel method is used to predict the open water characteristics of spade-type rudders. The inflow velocity is assumed to be constant in lime and uniform in space. Source and dipole are distributed on the rudder surface. It is assumed that the wake surface is streaming from trailing edge and it is represented by dipole distribution. In this paper, wake geometry is assumed by imposing appropriate conditions at the trailing edge and far from the body. The effects of wake geometry are studied. The pressure Kutta condition is applied at the trailing edge, the effects of which are compared with those of two-dimensional Kutta condition. The results of calculations for a spade-type rudder are compared with published results. It is concluded that this approach shows fairly good agreement with experimental results and can be used in the initial design stage of a rudder.

  • In this study, the effect of wake on the energy production of a downstream wind turbine was analyzed on the base of operation practices of wind farm in the coastal complex terrain which has 2 row array of wind turbines. And changes in the variation of wind speed and turbulence intensity was analyzed. In case wind turbines are spaced 4-rotor diameter-apart in the prevailing wind direction, reduction in energy production was confirmed due to the decrease of wind speed and the increase of turbulence intensity by wake. Especially a radical change of wind direction caused wind turbine a sudden stop and energy production significantly reduced. It is considered improvement of yaw brake can prevent the sudden stop and increase energy production.

  • In this study, an aerodynamic performance analysis code has been developed as a part of rotorcraft comprehensive program. Airloads on rotor blades are calculated based on the blade element theory with look-up tables of aerodynamic coefficients of 2-D airfoils. In order to calculate rotor induced inflow, various inflow prediction methods such as linear inflow, dynamic inflow, prescribed wake and free wake model are integrated into the present module. The aerodynamic characteristics of each method are compared and validated against available experimental data such as Elliot's inflow distribution and sectional normal force coefficients of AH-1G.

  • For accurate AEP prediction in a wind farm, it is necessary to effectively calculate the wind speed reduction and the power loss due to the wake effect in each wind direction. In this study, a computer program for AEP prediction considering directional wake effect was developed. The results of the developed program were compared with the actual AEP of the wind farm and the calculation result of existing commercial software to confirm the accuracy of prediction. The applied equations are identical with those of commercial software based on existing theories, but there is a difference in the calculation process of the detection of the wake effect area in each wind direction. As a result, the developed program predicted to be less than 1% of difference to the actual capacity factor and showed more than 2% of better results compared with the existing commercial software.
