The State, Market, Media: Cable Television Industry Organization during the Early Stage of Kim Dae-Jung Administration (국가 정책의 성격 변화와 뉴미디어 산업의 조직: 김대중정부 초기의 케이블TV 산업을 중심으로)

  • This is a dissertation about the state and cable television industry relationship during the early days of Kim Dae-Jung administration(1998.2-2000.1) in Korea. This study adopted historical approach and methodology of archival research. Offe's state theories of reproduction of late capitalism and the concept of Korean patriarchal state-led capitalism were suggested in this paper. Offe argued that the goal of the late capitalist state is successful capital accumulation and democratic legitimation with bureaucratic rationalization. For this purpose, the state intervenes market structuring by various plans and national policies. The Kim Dae-Jung administration reorganized cable television market with neo-liberalistic strategies and corporatist forms of policy-making. The government negotiated capitalists and civil society for managing capitalistic economy and cable television market in a horizontal relationship. Successful consequences of the market growth resulted in generating mass loyalty. The former administrations to the contrary, invisibly arranged state-led capitalism was an only alternative to the Kim Dae-Jung administration. The Korean state-led capitalism evolved gradually into different forms.

  • Conspiracy theory is often considered as a kind of paranoid and an act of throwing all the blame solely on the Big Other who is presumed to control all the incidents behind the curtain. While, it is also assessed as a socio-political sub-culture and a way of interpreting the world full of closure and insufficient information, keeping us from grasping 'the totality'. Meanwhile recent conspiracy films reflect the ever dense and concealed anatomy of the world now. And it reveals some kind of ideological tendency which is, 'sense of catastrophe' and 'non-ideology' reflecting the world of late capitalism society. This article intends to examine the altered representational appearance and ideology in recent conspiracy films so as to understand how the conspiracy theory, the social-political interpretational mechanism, is converged into the film narrative against the backdrop of late capitalism, a socio-political condition we live in.

Revealing "difference" for Space of Hope: A Comparative Study of Harvey and Gibson-Graham on Spatiality of Capitalism (희망의 공간을 만들기 위한 "차이" 드러내기: 자본주의 공간성에 대한 Harvey와 Gibson-Graham 비교 연구)

  • For a shift to a new paradigm that allows restoring solidarity among class, gender, and race, it is necessary to closely investigate the differences between Marxist view and poststructuralist view which provide theoretical basis for labor movement and for feminist movement, respectively. However, little effort has been devoted to this task. This paper critically compares two best wellknown geographers; Harvey's class-centered theory and Gibson-Graham's post-structuralist feminist approach by focusing on their understandings of "difference". David Harvey argues that racial/gender discrimination is another form of class-exploitation and puts priority on the solidarity based on the commonality of labor. On the contrary Gibson-Graham argues that the privileging of class above all else marginalizes other political dimension, and proposes the deconstruction of hegemonic discourse of capitalism and the construction of "community economies", Based on the critical survey of both theories, I propose that understanding the role that spatiality plays in capital accumulation process is the key to compromise two different approaches.

The Dissolution of Pre-capitalistic Distributional System - From 1876 to 1910 - (전(前)자본주의 분배체계의 해체 - 환곡을 중심으로 1910년 강제병탄까지 -)

  • This study aimed to understand the pre-capitalistic distributional system in association with politics and economics by examining the distributional system between 1876 (the opening of a port era) and 1910. The study revealed that the distributional system reflected the political and economic characteristics and changes of the pre-capitalistic society. The examination indicated the following implications and questions. First, we need a new narrative of Chosun's distributional system before the period of Japanese occupation. Chosun's distributional system can be identified as a self sufficient system (Hwan-gok). Second, most social welfare literature discuss private self sufficient system such as Gye or Hwang-Yak as the distributional system in the pre-modern Chosun; however, this does not accurately explain the system of Chosun society. Implication of such findings are discussed.

Love and Economy in Cross-border Marriages in South Korea (사랑과 경제의 관계를 통해 본 이주결혼)

  • This study attempts to explore a phenomenon of an expansion of emotional capitalism in the context of marriage migration. Emphasizing that 'emotion,' 'love,' 'affection,' 'intimacy,' and 'care' are neither materialistic nor a work, and noting that they are social roles attached to natural femininity and that they are separated from the economic realm, modern myth has been challenged by the increase of marriage industry, emotional/service work, and care industry. This study discusses the ways in which individual desires for love and intimacy and her/his economical needs are combined or negotiated. Specifically, this study 1) reviews existing literature on how 'love' and 'intimacy' has been combined with economy under capitalism in general, 2) discusses the ways in which a marriage has been commercially negotiated within the context of South Korea, 3) analyzes combined aspects of 'love' and 'economy' within cross-border marriages and suggests that cross-border marriages, even though they are highly commercially negotiated, may not be fully explained by 'economy' only as other marriages have both aspects of 'love' and 'economy.' An analysis on 'love' and 'economy,' not only separated from each other but also controversial, is essential for understanding 'intimacy' and transitions of Korean families in post-modern era. However, the evaluation criteria for commercial trades in 'love' and 'intimacy' have not developed yet. Whereas a certain trade is inevitable or essential, others may threaten our lives. Developing the ethical and political evaluation criteria on such commercial trades requires future study.

A Study on the extended functionalism (확장된 기능주의에 관한 연구)

  • After the second world war the vulgar functionalism, which was called as the international style, was developed in the interest of the post capitalistic society. The vulgar functionalism reflected only inhuman commercialism and brought to psycho-mental and social problems. By the result in the mid-sixties the criticism movement of the functionalism had began as a king of the 68-movement in the german architecture and design scene. And it went on in the seventies, and had a decisive influence on the forming of the extended functionalism. The extended functionalism is bases on the definition of functions in the using process of the mass production and consumption society. Those functions, viz. Practical Function, Theoretical Function, Ecological Function, (formal-) Aesthetical Function, Indicating Function, Symbolical Function, have been the core criteria in the analysis and developing phase of the todays' german design scene.

An Analysis of Social Discursive Space: Critique of New Liberal and New Conservative Discourses (사회적 담론공간 분석: 신자유주의, 신보수주의 담론을 중심으로)

  • This study is concerned with analysing complexity, flexibility and dynamism of social discoursive space. The developmental process of social discourse is analogous to that of a spatial structure of social discourse. Post-capitalist society has seen New-Liberalism and New-Conservatism have become dominant, resulting in the deterioration of the cultural politics of citizenship. It is argued that the position of otherness, in which those binary structures (inside/outside or centre/margin) collide and collapse, is where subversive discourse can emerge to dominant discursive power. Furthermore, it is necessary to democratize social discursive space, through which the Other becomes able to. participate in the social production, distribution and consumption of social discourse.

  • This research tried to project hidden and overall side of market economy system of capitalism through desire and fetishism of consumer society. The objective of this research lies in examining desire code of capitalism society through hidden side of consumer society and the reason why modern people are crazy about products, the meaning of product re-creation in tempting modern consumer society, life where all desire is satisfied by products. As a result, we intended to demonstrate that post-industrial society is the one triggered by desire and that society desired in post-industrial society is the very cultural, social study realized to enable modern people to survive in modern society through Martin Parr's pictures.

Public Art and Urban Reimagineering : An Evaluation of Busan Biennale 2006 (공공예술과 도시 재이미지화 : 2006 부산 비엔날레 평가)

  • Busan Biennale, began from 2000, has been argued that it would improve 'intrinsic introspection related to localism' against 'a lifestyle forced by capitalism in a global dimension', by promoting urban esthetic imagination in the public sphere of the city and reflecting it upon exhibited artworks. But Busan Biennale seems to reflect partly an attempt for new place marketing or urban reimagineering as a part of postmodern culture, even thought it has been planned to be an authentic stage or public-place art for citizens. This paper is to examine Busan Biennale 2006, held from Sep.16 to Nov.25 in Busan main theme of which is 'everywhere', constituted with three major projects: the Contemporary Art Exhibition, Sea Art Festival, and the Busan Sculpture Project. Ths paper considers first some implications of the transformation of modem to postmodern city, focusing on spatial representation of the city and public place art, and then tries to evaluate whether Busan Biennale is really embedded in the local authenticity and esthetic imagination for citizen or not. As concluding remarks, this paper suggests that Busan Biennale would be continuously developed, when it is oriented more towards local public-place art for citizens with their active participations rather than towards urban reimagineering strategy to make and promote an image of Busan as a global city.

Zombie, the Subject Ex Nihilo and the Ethics of Infection (좀비, 엑스 니힐로의 주체와 감염의 윤리)

  • The purpose of this article is to compare zombie narratives in relation to the Other. In previous research, the view of zombies as post-capitalist soulless consumers or workers has been frequently expressed. But in this article, I wanted to look at zombies as the main cause of the collapse of the world and a new future. First, zombies do not only mean the representation of the consumer in the late capitalist era. Rather, it is an awakening subject desiring the outside of the system. As you can see from the Uncanny's point of view, zombies are something that we should oppress as freaks and monsters that threatened the Other. To be a zombie in this way is to meet one's other self, the "Fundamentals of Humanity," and it is the moment when everything becomes the subject ex nihilo, the new beginning. Second, the concept of infection shows a new ethic. Zombie cannibalism is different from the selfish love of a vampire who sucks a worker's blood. Zombie cannibalism is an infection, which is a model of Christian love for one's neighbor. It is a moment of awakening and the beginning of solidarity. It is on the waiting for the solidarity that the zombie hangs in such a way, and the attack on the human being is an active illusion. Third, the situation of the end of a zombie narrative is another event for newness. The anger of a zombie serves not just to show monsters, but acts as a catalyst that accelerates the world's catastrophes. The anger of zombies is the messianic violence that stops the false world, and presents a new way. The emergence of zombies and the popular response to them embody a desire for the possibility of a new subject and world.
