In this study, we investigated the features of bioethanol fermentation of corncob biomass after oxalic acid pretreatment as well as enzymatic hydrolysis. The enzymatic hydrolysis was performed with Accellerase 1000 and the highest yield of monomeric sugars ($64.8g/{\ell}$) was obtained at $50^{\circ}C$ and pH 4.5 for 96 hrs hydrolysis period. For the ethanol fermentation the monomeric sugars obtained from pretreated corncob were subjected to the biological treatment using Pichia stipitis CBS 6054. It was turned out that ethanol production from oxalic acid pretreated corncob was the most feasible at 10~14% of biomass loading as well as 15 FPU enzyme amount. Under these fermentation condition, the ethanol yield was approached to 0.47 after 24 hrs fermentation period, which was corresponded to 92.2% of conversion rate.
We investigate the effect of enzyme pretreatment using protease, carbohydrase, and lipase on improvement of sludge treatment efficiency by measuring SCOD and TCOD. The enzyme-pretreatment increases SCOD of excess sludge. In addition, the amount of sludge reduction during digestion, in terms of SCOD and TCOD, are enhanced by enzyme-pretreatment. Among pretense, carbohydrase, and lipase, pretense showed the best enhancement of the sludge treatment efficiency. Sludge digestion followed by ozone and enzyme treatments showed more effective sludge treatment when compared with ozone treatment alone. Therefore, we expect that enzyme pretreatment can be used as a useful tool for enhancing the sludge treatment efficiency.

We have investigated pretreatment of waste wood using milling refinery combined with poping method, which can save energy for pretreatment and enzyme loading for enzymatic hydrolysis. The chemical analysis of holocellulose of non and popping treated waste wood showed 65.9% and 58.8%, and the lignin, organic extracts and ash were increased by 3%, 4% and 0.7% after pretreatment, respectively. The reducing sugar yields of pretreated waste wood were increased four times more than non-pretreated one and the synergistic effect of cellulase and xylanase were evaluated compare with individual enzyme treatment. Especially, enzyme cocktail (cellulase 50 U and xylanase 50 U) treatment was very efficient in 1% substrate (50 mg). Also, glucose and xylose conversion rate of pretreated waste wood by GC analysis were 45.9% and 38.7%, respectively.
The process of the preparation of branched-chain amino acid (BCAA)-enriched hydrolysates from corn gluten was optimized through the parameters of pre-treatment (heating and cellulosic hydrolysis), hydrolysis method (acid, protease, and microbe plus protease), concentration, and spray drying condition. The protein yield of corn gluten was increased by heating and cellulase treatments. Among three different hydrolysis methods, the combined use of microbes and protease was the most effective in terms of free amino acid (FAA) and BCAA content of the corn gluten hydrolysates. In addition, the FAA and BCAA content in the hydrolysates prepared by microbial and enzymatic combined treatment were improved by a concentration process. Spray drying conditions for the preparation of the powder from the hydrolyzed reactant were an inlet temperature of $185^{\circ}C$, outlet temperature of $80^{\circ}C$, and the use of maltodextrin as an anticaking agent. Thus, this study established an economical process for preparation of value-added hydrolysates of excellent productivity and quality, in terms of high BCAA content and product stability.
To evaluate the effects of chemical pretreatments of lignocellulosic biomass on enzymatic hydrolysis process, Populus euramericana was pretreated for 1 hr with 1% sulfuric acid ($H_2SO_4$) at $150^{\circ}C$ and 1% sodium hydroxide (NaOH) at $160^{\circ}C$, respectively. Before the enzymatic hydrolysis, each pretreated sample was subjected to drying process and thus finally divided into four subgroups; dried or non-dried acid pretreated samples and dried or non-dried alkali pretreated samples and chemical and physical properties of them were analyzed. Biomass degradation by acid pretreatment was determined to 6% higher compared to alkali pretreatment. By the action of acid ca. 24.5% of biomass was dissolved into solution, while alkali degraded ca. 18.6% of biomass. However, reverse results were observed in delignification rates, in which alkali pretreatment released 2% more lignin fragment from biomass to the solution than acid pretreatment. Unexpectedly, samples after both pretreatments were determined to somewhat higher crystallinity than untreated samples. This result may be explained by selective disrupture of amorphous region in cellulose during pretreatments, thus the cellulose crystallinity seems to be accumulated in the pretreated samples. SEM images revealed that pretreated samples showed relative rough and partly cracked surfaces due to the decomposition of components, but the image of acid pretreated samples which were dried was similar to that of the control. In pore size distribution, dried acid pretreated samples were similar to the control, while that in alkali pretreated samples was gradually increased as pore diameter increased. The pore volume which increased by acid pretreatment rapidly decreased by drying process. Alkali pretreatment was much more effective on enzymatic digestibility than acid pretreatment. The sample after alkali pretreatment was enzymatically hydrolyzed up to 45.8%, while only 26.9% of acid pretreated sample was digested at the same condition. The high digestibility of the sample was also influenced to the yields of monomeric sugars during enzymatic hydrolysis. In addition, drying process of pretreated samples affected detrimentally not only to digestibility but also to the yields of monomeric sugars.
The effect of the pretreatment by solvent extraction on the saccharification of poplar (Populus euramencana) was studied. The solvent system was Phenol/H2O(Uncatalyzed)and Phenol/H2O/HCl catalyst system. When the poplar was pretreated by uncatalyzed system, the best result of the saccharification was total of 43.9 g/1 reducing sugar produced and 83.5% of carbohydrated conversion was obtained at 19$0^{\circ}C$, 60 minutes. Total wood yield and the lignin removal were 46.3% and 98.2% respectively. The use of acid catalyst was unsuitable to increase he efficiency of saccharification.
We have investigated the combined pretreatment of electron beam irradiation (EBI) and water steam as a kenaf core pretreatment process. After each sample was exposed to electron beam dose ranging from 50 to 1,000 kGy, the irradiated sample was treated by water steam using an autoclave for 5-h at $120^{\circ}C$. The pretreated samples were characterized using FTIR-ATR and XRD. FTIR spectra and XRD analysis of nonpretreated and pretreated samples confirm that crystallinity changes were observed before and after the pretreatment. The crystallinity index (CrI) was increased from 50.6% for nonpretreated sample 55.0% for 500 kGy exposed sample. And then, we analyzed sugar yield that is the amount of produced mono-saccharides in pretreated sample by enzymatic hydrolysis; an enzyme activity rate was 70 FPU/mL and 40 CBU/mL, and the loading time was 24, 48 and 72-h. The highest sugar yield was 83.9% at 500 kGy after 72-h for enzymatic hydrolysis. The sugar yield of enzymatic hydrolysis for pretreatment samples was increased as doses are subsequently changed to 100, 200 and 300 kGy, allowing to give 50.8%, 58.6% and 67.9%, respectively.

Softening effects of enzyme following pre-treatments were examined. Four pre-treatments: raw (R), heat (H), heat and freeze-thawing (HFT), heat and freeze-drying (HFD) were applied to carrot. Subsequently, each treated sample was immersed in 10% celluclast enzyme solution for up to 6 h and then their properties were compared. The minimum and the maximum color change was observed in HFD and H, respectively. R showed no change in hardness after 6 h immersion, indicating that the enzyme did not penetrate the carrot. The number and size of pores were greater in samples undergone HFT or HFD as observed by microstructure analysis using SEM, and HFD caused 99.5% reduction in hardness after 6 h immersion. After 6 h immersion post-HFT or 3 h immersion post-HFD, the hardness was less than $20,000N/m^2$, indicating tongue ingestion was possible, and the samples retained their original shape and easily collapsed by spoon pressing.

The purpose of this study was to effectively produce the biosugar from cell wall of lipid extracted microalgae (LEA) by using microwave-assisted pretreatment without enzymatic hydrolysis process. Response surface methodology (RSM) was applied to optimization of microwave-assisted pretreatment conditions for the production of biosugar based on enzyme-free process from LEA. Microwave power (198~702 W), extraction time (39~241 sec), and sulfuric acid (0~1.0 mol) were used as independent variables for central composite design (CCD) in order to predict optimum pretreatment conditions. It was noted that the pretreatment variables that affect the production of glucose (C6) and xylose (C5) significantly have been identified as the microwave power and extraction time. Additionally, the increase in microwave power and time had led to an increase in biosugar production. The superimposed contour plot for maximizing dependent variables showed the maximum C6 (hexose) and C5 (pentose) yields of 92.7 and 74.5% were estimated by the predicted model under pretreatment condition of 700 w, 185.7 sec, and 0.48 mol, and the yields of C6 and C5 were confirmed as 94.2 and 71.8% by experimental validation, respectively. This study showed that microwave-assisted pretreatment under low temperature below $100^{\circ}C$ with short pretreatment time was verified to be an effective enzyme free pretreatment process for the production of biosugar from LEA compared to conventional pretreatment methods.
A pretreatment method to increase enzymatic digestibility for waste paper such as newspaper was investigated. Ash content, substrate size and printed ink were considered to be factors that affect on enzymatic hydrolysis. The effect on enzymatic digestibility of varying these factor were measured. Printed ink had the highest effect of the three factors, so a method was developed to remove the ink during pretreatment. Fist, a pretreatment process using a percolation reactor was tried. The digestibility of the substrate pretreated at 170$\^{C}$, however, was less than that of the untreated substrate because only small portion of ink was removed. Therefore, a batch type process at less than 100$\^{C}$ was devised. Of several schemes, a method using amonia-hydrogen peroxide mixture on a shaking bath proved most effective. The digestibility obtained from this method was about 85%--approximately 20% greater than the untreated substrate. This proves the pretreatment method was very effective in treating waste paper. The high digestibility obtained from this pretreatment is probably due to the effects of the hydrogen peroxide that can enhance ink removal and substrate swelling.
