  • Dynamic response measurements from natural excitation were carried out for three 18-story office buildings to determine their inherent properties. The beam-column frame system was adopted as a typical structural form, but a core wall was added to resist the lateral force more effectively, resulting in a mixed configuration. To extract modal parameters such as natural frequencies, mode shapes and damping ratios from a series of vibration records at each floor, the most advanced operational system identification methods based on frequency- and time-domain like FDD, pLSCF and SSI were applied. Extracted frequencies and mode shapes from the different identification methods showed a greater consistency for three buildings, however the three lower frequencies extracted were 1.2 to 1.7 times as stiff as those obtained using the initial FE models. Comparing the extracted fundamental periods with those estimated from the code equations and FE analysis, the FE analysis results showed the most flexible behavior, and the most simple equation that considers the building height as the only parameter correlated fairly well with test results. It is recognized that such a discrepancy arises from the fact that the present tests exclude the stiffness decreasing factors like concrete cracking, while the FE models ignore the stiffness increasing factors, such as the contribution of non-structural elements and the actual material properties used.

  • The present study investigated local heat transfer characteristics around a film cooling hole with variations of free stream turbulence intensity The film cooling jet is injected through a single hole inclined at $30^{\cire}$ to the surface and laterally at $45^{\cire}$ for the blowing rates of 0.5, 1.0 and 2.0. Turbulence generating grids are used at upstream of the film cooling hole to change the turbulence intensity of free stream. Free stream turbulence intensity without grids is 0.5%. Two different turbulence generating grid is installed at different at locations upstream of the film cooling hole so that turbulence intensity of free stream varies from 3% to 10%. The naphthalene sublimation technique has been employed to determine local heat/ mass transfer coefficients. With low free stream turbulence intensity, heat/mass transfer augmented area by coolant or free stream is distinguished evidently. However, when free stream turbulence intensity is high, heat transfer is enhanced in all region and heat transfer enhanced regions are not clearly divided due to vigorous mixing of coolant and free stream. The peak values of heat/mass coefficients are decreased and the distributions of heat/mass transfer coefficients are more uniform with high turbulence intensity. The effect of turbulence intensity on heat transfer characteristics is more evident as blowing rate is higher.

  • An experimental study was carried out for beam-column joints composed of RC column and RS beams. The purpose of this study is to examine the inelastic seismic behavior for the RC-RS connection. Two interior and one exterior beam-column assemblies with variable moment ratios were tested. Experimental results showed that strength and deformability except stiffness were satisfactory. It is considered that the lack of stiffness was due to the slipping of steel beam from RS beam. The behavioral characteristics of the RC-RS connection were evaluated according to the quideline suggested by Hawkins et al. Nominal strength at 5 % joint distortion was not satisfactory, but all the other requirements, such as strength preserving capability, energy dissipation, and initial stiffness and strength ratios after peak load were satisfactory compared with the guideline. Thus it was concluded that the RC-RS connections can maintain ductility with excellent energy-dissipating capacity if being provided with appropriate reinforced structural system such as RC core wall for the initial lateral stiffness.

  • Among structural systems for complex-shaped tall buildings, diagrid system is widely used because of its structural efficiency and beauty of form. Recently, mega frame is favorably employed as a suitable structural system for skyscrapers because this structural system has sufficient stiffness against the lateral forces by combination of mega members which consist of many columns and girders. Diagrid mega frame system is expected to be promising structural system for future super tall buildings. However, it takes tremendous analysis times and engineer's efforts to predict the structural behavior of tall buildings applied with diagrid mega frame system because the diagrid mega frame structure has significant numbers of elements and nodes. Therefore, efficient analytical method for all buildings applied with diagrid mega frame system has been proposed in this study to reduce the efforts and time required for the analysis and design of diagrid mega frame structure. To this end, an efficient modelling technique using the characteristics of diagrid mega frame structures and an efficient analytical model using minimal DOFs by the matrix condensation method were proposed in this study. Based on the analysis of an example structure, the effectiveness and accuracy of the proposed method have been verified by the comparison between the results of the proposed method and the conventional method.

  • Downsizing is widely applied to diesel engines in order to improve fuel efficiency and reduce exhaust emissions. Engine sizes are becoming smaller but pressure and temperature inside combustion chambers are increasing. Therefore, research for fuel spray under high pressure and temperature conditions is important. A constant volume chamber which simulates high temperature and pressure likely to be found in diesel engines was developed in this study. Pressure and temperature were increased abruptly because of ignition of the pre-mixture in the constant volume chamber. Then pressure and temperature were gradually decreased due to the heat loss through the chamber wall. Fuel spray occurred when temperature and pressure were reached at the target condition. In this experiment, the temperature condition should be exactly defined to understand the relation between fuel evaporation and ambient temperature. A fast response thermocouple was developed and used to measure the temporal and spatial temperature distribution during the combustion process inside the combustion chamber. In the results, the core temperature was slightly higher than the bulk temperature calculated by the gas equation. Ed-note: do you want to say 'ideal gas equation'? This was attributed to the heat transfer loss through the chamber wall. The vertical temperature deviation was higher than the horizontal temperature deviation by 5% which resulted from the buoyancy effect.

  • This paper investigated the plant and raw material of the ready-mixed concrete company which could supply to the second Lotte World on Pusan. the results were summarized as following. Almost plants were mainly using Twin shaft mixer which was 210m$^3$/hr and horizontal type. There was different the number of admixture silos at each plants, and they were separated by types. The mixtures mainly consisted of the ordinary portland cement, fly ash and blast furnace slag. For favorable quality control, each materials had to carry from same factories, and the monitering standard for quality control should be prepared. The coarse aggregates were used with many different producing districts, so they were only used from Y caused by exclusion of quality difference. The crushed, washed and river sands were generally used as fine aggregates, so the fine aggregates which could be possible to supply stable quality were chosen. This study used Poly Carbonic Acid Admixture which was developed to satisfy maintenance of performance till 2 hours and 10MPa at 15 hours.

  • An experimental research was performed using fibers for the purpose of retrofitting existing reinforced concrete circular columns. Glass fiber (GF) and polyethylene terephthalate (PET) were used as well as combined GF+PET (HF). PET has high tensile strength (over 600 MPa) and high ductility (about 15%), but has very low elastic modulus (about 1/6 of GF). A total of four columns was tested against laterally applied reverse cyclic load: control column, GF-, PET-, and HF-strengthened columns. All columns retrofitted using fibers demonstrated improved moment capacity and ductility. Moment capacity of GF-, PET-, and HF-strengthened columns was 120%, 107%, and 120% of the control column, respectively. Drift ratio of all retrofitted columns also increased by 63 ~ 83% over the control column. The final failure mode of the control column was main bar buckling. The final failure mode of the GF- and HF-strengthened columns was GF rupture while that of the PET-strengthened column was main bar rupture in tension. No damage was observed for PET at the ultimate stage due to excellent strain capacity intrinsic to PET. Current test results indicate that PET can be effectively used for seismic retrofit of RC columns. It is noted that the durability characteristics of PET needs to be investigated in the future.

  • Advances in measurement techniques have reduced measurement costs and enhanced safety resulting in less uncertainty. For example, an acoustic doppler current profiler (ADCP) based suspended sediment concentration (SSC) measurement technique is being accepted as an alternative to the conventional data collection method. In Korean rivers, horizontal ADCPs (H-ADCPs) are mounted on the automatic discharge monitoring stations, where SSC can be measured using the backscatter of ADCPs. However, automatic discharge monitoring stations and sediment monitoring stations do not always coincide which hinders the application of the new techniques that are not feasible to some stations. This work presents and analyzes H-ADCP-SSC models for 9 discharge monitoring stations in Korean rivers. In application of the Gaussian mixture model (GMM) to sediment-related variables (catchment area, particle size distributions of suspended sediment and bed material, water discharge-sediment discharge curves) from 44 sediment monitoring stations, it is revealed that those characteristics can distinguish sediment monitoring stations regionally. Linking the two results, we propose a protocol determining the H-ADCP-SSC model where no H-ADCP-SSC model is available.

  • This study was done to evaluate whether there were any differences in microleakage of class V composite restorations according to restoration site and cavity size. Total sixty-four restorations were made in molar teeth using Esthet-X. Small ($2\;{\times}\;2\;{\times}\;1.5\;mm$) and large ($4{\times}2{\times}1.5\;mm$) restorations were made at the buccal/lingual surface and the proximal surface each. After 1,000 times of thermocycling ($5^{\circ}\;-\;55^{\circ}C$), resin replica was made and the percentage of marginal gap to the whole periphery of the restoration was estimated from SEM evaluation. Thermocycled tooth was dye penetrated with $50\%$ silver nitrate solution. After imbedding in an auto-curing resin, it was serially ground with a thickness of 0.25 mm. Volumetric microleakage was estimated after reconstructing three dimensionally. Two-way ANOVA and independent T-test for dye volume, Mann-Whitney U test for the percentage of marginal gap, Spearman's rho test for the relationship between two techniques were used, The results were as follows : 1. The site and size of the restoration affected on the microleakage of restoration. Namely, much more leakage was seen in the proximal and the large restorations rather than the buccal/lingual and the small restorations. 2. Close relationship was found between two techniques (Correlation coefficient = 0.614/ P = 0.000). Within the limits of this study, it was noted that proximal and the large restorations leaked more than buccal/lingual and the small restorations. Therefore, it should be strictly recommended large exposure of margins should be avoided by reducing unnecessary tooth reduction.
