  • Transition curves are located between curve and straight section in railway. These transition curves are vulnerable to the ride comfort of passengers and safety of a vehicle because lateral acceleration, lateral jerk and roll velocity increase as curvature and cant change along the transition curves. In this paper, ride comfort on the transition curve was calculated on the basis of lateral acceleration and roll velocity measurements. The evaluation of ride comfort was conducted according to the methodology specified in European Standard. The distribution characteristics of the comfort index were investigated for the korean conventional line from the evaluation results. The influence of the curve radius and the vehicle speed on the ride comfort index was also investigated. Finally, the relationship between ride comfort and the rate of cant changes on transition curves was analyzed.

  • This paper presents an adaptive variable weights tuning system for an integrated chassis control with electronic stability control (ESC) and active front steering (AFS) for lateral stability enhancement. After calculating the control yaw moment needed to stabilize a vehicle with a controller design method, it is distributed into the tire forces generated by ESC and AFS using weighted pseudo-inverse-based control allocation (WPCA). On a low friction road, lateral stability can deteriorate due to high vehicle speed. To cope with the problem, adaptive tuning rules on variable weights of the WPCA are proposed. To check the effectiveness of the proposed method, a simulation was performed on the vehicle simulation package, CarSim.

  • This study presents a viscoelastic characterization of flexible pavement subjected to moving loads. A series of field tests have been conducted on three pavement sections (A2, A5, and A8) at the Korea Expressway Corporation (KEC) test road. The effect of vehicle speed on the responses of each test section was investigated at three speeds: 25 km/hr, 50 km/hr, and 80 km/hr. During the test, both longitudinal and lateral strains were measured at the bottom of asphalt layers and in-situ measurements were compared with the results of finite element (FE) analyses. A commercial FE package, ABAQUS was used to model each test section and a step loading approximation has been adopted to simulate the effect a moving vehicle. For viscoelastic analysis, relaxation moduli of asphalt mixtures were obtained from laboratory test. Field responses reveals the strain anisotropy (i.e., discrepancy between longitudinal and lateral strains) and the amplitude of strain normally decreases as the vehicle speed increases. In most cases, lateral strain was smaller than longitudinal strain, and strain reduction was more significant in lateral direction.

  • The purpose of this paper is to analyze the impact response behaviors of glass/epoxy laminated composite plates subjected to the transversely impact of a steel ball. For this purpose, dynamic finite element analysis based on the higher-order shear defomation plate theory is used to compute the contact forces, rebound velocity of a steel ball, and dynamic strain response histories. And low-velocity and high-velocity impact experiments were conducted to compare the results and compute the wave propagation velocities. The results obtained from impact experiments are in good agreement with those of dynamic finite element analysis. Also the wave propagation velocities obtained from high-velocity impact experiments and wave propagation theory agree well, and wave velocities were higher in the smaller radius of steel ball.

  • As the ambient vibration test (AVT) of railway bridges has a limited range of speed, it has a limitation in examining the dynamic behavior of bridges accordingto speed. Thus, in order to analyze the correlation between the speed of a train passing over a bridge and the bridge's dynamic response, we conducted a speed-increasing experiment using a real diesel locomotive. To analyze the acceleration response characteristics, we attached seven vertical accelerometers at equal intervals throughout the entire section of the bridge except the supports, and one horizontal accelerometer to the middle span. Linear variable differential transformers (LVDT) were installed at the bridge's center in both vertical and horizontal directions to investigate the vertical and horizontal behaviors. The test train was statically loaded at the center and at the end of the bridge. And its speed was increased from 5 km/h to 90 km/h. With data obtained from the experiment, the vibration level was evaluated in each direction by the filtering frequency, and the level of horizontal vibration was examined in comparison with vertical vibration. The displacement and wheel load variation was analyzed by speed.

  • The local hydraulic characteristics in a single phase flow of a 6$\times$6 rod bundle with neighboring different spacer grids were measured by using a LDV(Laser Doppler Velocimeter) system. 6$\times$6 rod bundle is formed by two 3$\times$6 rod bundles with different spacer grids. The objective of this study in a rod bundle is to investigate the thermal-hydraulic interactions between different spacer grids with different configurations and resistance. By using a LDV system, the velocity and turbulent intensity in axial and horizontal directions ore measured. Pressure drop measurements ore also performed to evaluate the loss coefficient for the spacer grid and the friction factor for rod bundles. Implications concerning thermal mining due to spacer grids were investigated based on the hydraulic test results. Swirl factor, which is assumed as a qualitative criteria for DNB(departure from nucleate boiling), was defined and estimated from the horizontal velocity result.

  • It is well known that the ship manoeuvring motion is greatly affected by hydrodynamic forces and moments acting between two vessels passing too close to each other in confined waters, such as in a harbour or narrow channel. This interaction between two vessels could be assumed to be the functions of the longitudinal distance, transverse distance and their speeds. The aim of this study is to calculate the interaction between two vessels passing close to each other on parallel courses by simulation, and to estimate the effect of rudder action and time at collision through simulation under the condition of various longitudinal distances and different speed-ratios of the two vessels.

  • In this study, a running performance evaluation and roller rig test was conducted to evaluate the applicability of a composite bogie frame, which has the role of the primary suspension. The composite bogie frame was made of a GEP224 glass/epoxy prepreg. Vehicle dynamic analysis was carried out on the composite bogie with three different kinds of side beam thicknesses (50 mm, 80 mm, and 150 mm). From the results, the composite bogie with a side beam thickness of 80 mm satisfied all the dynamic design requirements. Although the composite bogie with the side beam thickness of 50mm also met the design requirements, its critical speed was just a 2% margin to the requirement. In contrast, the model of the side beam thickness of 150mm did not meet the ride comfort. In addition, a composite bogie frame with the side beam thickness of 80 mm was fabricated and installed on a complete bogie. Moreover, the roller rig test using the fully equipped bogie was performed to evaluate the critical speed. During the test, the lateral excitation was imposed on the wheelsets to realize the rail irregularity. There was no divergence of the lateral displacement of the wheelsets while increasing the speed. The measured critical speed was similar to the predicted result.

  • Thermal cesium atomic beam was collimated by transversely cooling of atoms, for which circularly polarized ($\sigma^+$ and $\sigma^-$ polarized) laser light was illuminated to the atomic beam from two perpendicular directions. As a result, the temperature corresponding to the transverse velocity component could be decreased from 430 mK to 60 11K. In addition, the spatial atomic distribution was observed according to the power difference of the two laser beams and the magnetic field applied, and the result was qualitatively coincided with the calculation result by the Doppler cooling theory. heory.
