  • In order to calculate the optimum installation interval between a speed hump and hump type crosswalk that are installed continuously in succession, this study examined the speed of a vehicle that passes different intervals between speed humps and hump type crosswalks from the approach section of a roundabout having a maximum speed limit of 30km/h; analyzed the effects of speed humps and hump type crosswalks installed continuously in succession on vehicle driving speed; and simulated the optimum installation height of hump type crosswalk. As a result, the following conclusion was drawn. First, it was found that the optimum interval between a speed hump and hump type crosswalk, which are the representative traffic calming techniques for reducing vehicle speed, to control vehicle speed under 30km/h is 30m. Second, as a result of comparing the deceleration of a vehicle that pass hump type crosswalks, it was found that if the installation interval is 65 m and above, a speed hump and hump type crosswalk had no effect. Therefore, it is desirable that the maximum installation interval between a speed hump and hump type crosswalk for controlling vehicle speed within a fixed road section should not exceed 65m. Third, the analysis showed that the optimum installation height of hump type crosswalk is 6-8cm in case vehicle speed at the approach section is 20km/h or lower, 8-10cm in case of 30km/h, and 10cm in case of 30km/h or higher, respectively. Fourth, even at a road section on which a speed hump and hump type crosswalk are installed, speed reduction effects may sometimes be insignificant due to a driver's studying effect, traffic conditions and so on. Thus, it is judged that speed reduction effects will be greater if several traffic calming techniques such as speed hump, chicane, and choker are applied at the same time. Therefore, in case of applying traffic calming techniques for the purpose of reducing vehicle speed in order to promote pedestrian safety, the composite application of several techniques should be considered.

  • According to Traffic Accident Statistics, the fatalities of accident while crossing is over represented. So, more active safety countermeasure should be considered to reduce the frequency and degree of severity of pedestrian-crossing involved accidents. The study analyses the safety effects of the Crossing Safety Assistant System which is composed of Led-embedded crosswalk lightings, text displayer and audio waning device for the safety consciousness both pedestrian and vehicles at crosswalk area. Operating speed of vehicles is reduced with statistical significance, and the level of vigilance expressed by pedestrian head movement to check out the vehicle existence is improved.

  • The traffic vulnerable, including elderly pedestrians, have a relatively low walking speed and slow cognitive response time due to reduced physical ability. Although a smart crossing system has been developed and operated to improve problem, it is difficult to operate a signal that reflects the appropriate walking speed for each pedestrian. In this study, a neural network model and a multiple regression model-based traversing speed estimation model were developed using image information collected in an area with a high percentage of traffic vulnerability. to support the provision of optimal walking signals according to real-time traffic weakness. actual traffic data collected from the urban traffic network of Paju-si, Gyeonggi-do were used. The performance of the model was evaluated through seven selected indicators, including correlation coefficient and mean absolute error. The multiple linear regression model had a correlation coefficient of 0.652 and 0.182; the neural network model had a correlation coefficient of 0.823 and 0.105. The neural network model showed higher predictive power.

  • Recently, the number of traffic accidents has also increased with the increase in the penetration rate of cars in Korea. In particular, not only inter-vehicle accidents but also human accidents near crosswalks are increasing, so that more attention to traffic safety around crosswalks are required. In this paper, we propose a system for predicting the safety level around the crosswalk by recognizing an approaching vehicle and estimating the speed of the vehicle using NVIDIA Jetson Nano-class edge devices. To this end, various machine learning models are trained with the information obtained from deep learning-based vehicle detection to predict the degree of risk according to the speed of an approaching vehicle. Finally, based on experiments using actual driving images and web simulation, the performance and the feasibility of the proposed system are validated.

  • This study attempted to examine the impact of musculoskeletal pain on pedestrian crossing using a sample that consisted of 282 aged people. The research method involved an examination of the musculoskeletal pain of the elderly using a musculoskeletal questionnaire. The subjects were also told to walk across four- and six-lane pedestrian crossings while their gait velocity, step count, and step time were measured. The research results for pain by body regions indicated that waist pain had the highest complaint rate(33.3%). When there was musculoskeletal pain in the waist and leg/foot, gait velocity also decreased and step count and step time increased. However, usage of a cane turned out to have a positive impact on pedestrian crossing. Nevertheless, no significant relationship between waist and leg/foot pain and pedestrian crossing characteristics was found. We expect there will be continuous further studies on the subject of diverse physical problems of the aged and pedestrian crossing.

  • In this paper, an efficient signal interference control technique to improve the convergence speed of Adaptive transversal filter with LMS algorithm is introduced. The convergence characteristics of the proposed algorithm, whose coefficients are multiply adapted in a symbol time period by recycling the received data, are analyzed to prove theoretically the improvement of convergence speed. According as the step-size parameter ${\mu}$ is increased, the rate of convergence of the algorithm is controlled. Increasing the eigenvalue spread has the effect of controlling down the rate of convergence of the adaptive equalizer and also increasing the steady-state value of the average squared error and also demonstrate the superiority of signal interference control to the filter algorithm increasing convergence speed by (B+1) times due to the data-recycling LMS Algorithms.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study is to analyze the walking characteristics of jaywalking pedestrians, which account for a large proportion of deaths in pedestrian traffic accidents. Method: As for the analysis method, after collecting data of jaywalking pedestrians using imaging equipment, frequency analysis and statistical verification were performed on the jaywalking characteristics of elderly and non-elderly people. Result: It was found that there was a difference in the characteristics of jaywalking between the elderly and non-elders, but in the case of walking speed, insignificant results were derived. However, it was found that among the elderly, the group having difficulty walking in general had a lower walking speed than the group that did not. Conclusion: It is judged that one of the causes of jaywalking is the perception of illegal activities and insensitivity to the risk of accidents, not the age and walking ability. Therefore, in addition to safety education, it is judged that it is necessary to provide pedestrian safety information that requires the driver's attention in multiple jaywalking sections.
