  • In this paper, we present an indoor propagation prediction model which is based on a three-dimensional ray-tracing technique. In this model, instead of considering all obstacles such as furnitures and fixtures, etc., only main obstacles to the propagation such as walls, ceiling and floors are modeled as slabs with finite thickness and conductivity, and the significant phenomena of propagation are considered, so we can calculate simply and predict accurately the propagation losses. The propagating rays are considered to be reflected and transmitted specularly at the boundaries of obstacles, and diffracted at edges. The reflection and transmission losses on flat obstacles are calculated by using ray tracing method, and the diffraction losses at edges are calculated by using the uniform theory of diffraction (UTD) for finite conductivity media. The results simulated for some cases by this propagation model good agree with the measured value of pathloss.

  • Radio frequency management system(RFMS) is being operated to facilitate national spectrum management and monitoring in Korea. To improve the engineering analysis function in RFMS, criteria for the automated selection of the propagation model adequate to the radio station service environment considered are proposed. Those criteria are derived from the specified parameters obtained through the analysis of related ITU-R propagation & diffraction loss models which are to be used in RFMS. Then, using criteria acquired, computer program is made to achieve the automated selection of the most appropriate propagation algorithm, among the ones provided in RFMS, to the environment in which the engineering analysis is required. Furthermore, an illustrative example is shown with the proposals fur increasing the efficiency of the engineering analysis in RFMS.

Abstract In cellular mobile communication systems, wave propagation models are used in most cases to predict cell coverage. The amount of propagation loss induced by the obstacles in the propagation path, however, is a highly non-linear function, which cannot be easily represented mathematically. In this paper, we introduce the method of producing propagation loss prediction models by function approximation using neural networks. In this method, we assume the propagation loss is a function of the relevant parameters such as the distance from the base station antenna, the specification of the transmitter antenna, obstacle profile, diffraction effect, road, and water effect. The values of these parameters are produced from the field measurement data, 3D digital terrain maps, and vector maps as its inputs by a feature extraction process, which takes into account the physical characteristics of electromagnetic waves such as reflection, diffraction and scattering. The values produced are used as the input to the neural network, which are then trained to become the propagation loss prediction model. In the experimental study, we obtain a considerable amount of improvement over COST-231 model in the prediction accuracy using this model.

  • Microwave(M/W) bands, though having great demand in wireless services, have been used mostly for long distance communications. As a result, the studies on their mobile radio models have been made less than on VHF/UHF. However, as the mobile communication services with M/W bands have been increasing, the development of a more accurate prediction model of the mobile radio environments has been demanded. The development of a reliable radio prediction model in the mobile radio environments requires the measurement and analysis of the characteristics of the radio waves according to reflection, diffraction and scattering of radio signals in various mobile radio environments. The proposed 8 GHz band radio prediction models have 2 different categories: (1) LOS model and (2) non-LOS model. The LOS model predicts signal strength using the analytic result with measured pathless exponents for the waves direct and reflected by ground and buildings, and the non-LOS model suggests a prediction model of received power by calculating the signal variations after diffraction.

  • Wireless communication system for firefighters has an important role as the last communication method between the commander and the firefighters in disaster sites like fire. But the operation of Gyeongnam wireless communication system is installed, and maintained and controlled without criteria for the selection of a transmitting station and the analysis of propagation environment because of the lack of budget and the absence of professional personnel. To improve the performance of the radio station, this paper theoretically calculated free space loss of UHF 400 MHz band used by all firefighters in Gyeongnam and diffractions caused by single and multiple obstacles and computed the error after comparing the results of the actual measurement to those of simulation with FRAS operated by KFL. In the results, Deygout model was the most consistent with the actual measurement for 400MHz band in Kimhae site.

  • The significant additional path loss is caused by scattering, diffraction, and attenuation of propagation. Most of the wave propagation models for rural areas mainly have considered the influence of topography but ignored the effects due to land usage. The goal of this paper is development of the field strength prediction program for Cheju which is used the contour map and the effects due to land usage. In oder to classify the propagation path and divide the environment of land, data of the terrain and the land-cover are formed into a pixel. Two-ray model is transformed into equivalent model by the predicted reflection coefficient and the slope of terrain. For non line of sight, the additional loss is determined by quantitative analysis. The result show good accord and the wave propagation model program can be applied to predicted the service region in rural area of Cheju.

  • With the rapid development of wireless communication at VHF and UHF bands, there is an increasing need for the reliable propagation prediction tools. Therefore, the different propagation models that have been developed in many countries as well as korea has been trying to secure a model suitable for their geographical area but then it is giving us a different result when we compared it to measured values. In this paper, based on the measurements of DTV broadcasting services in domestic urban area, analysis and comparison of ITU-R P.1546 and BCAST models provide errors between measured and predicted values, and some points for improving SMI system has been proposed. As a result, P.1546 model provides the valid predicted data similar to measured data, but BCAST model has some problems of large deviation and higher prediction to measured data. In future, these problems and diffractions due to high buildings need to be studied further.

  • Path loss prediction method, one of the most essential parts in measuring the service area in mobile telecommunication, has been developed for many years. But, wave propagation depends on many kinds of environmental factors such as frequency, distance, the heights of transmitting and receiving antenna and the terrain status(buildings in large city, hilly terrain, mountain). These are the main reasons that the propagation models developed in foreign environments can not fit into Korean propagation condition. In this paper, therefore, we performed the measurement in Korean terrain environment in pager frequency band after deviding the terrain characteristics into six types. With this measured data, we derived several curves that follows the long-term wave progagation behavior and developed the wave propagftion prediction model which calculates the field strength at any point in the service area. The proposed model estimates the field strength in two categories, LOS(line-of-sight), or non LOS. We applied this model using the digital terrain data base and compared with the measured data. The result shows that the errors were between 3~9dB, which turned out to be practical.

  • In this study, the noise mapping simulation is executed to design an effective barrier reducing noise levels of a school site. The geographical features of the ambient site and the school buildings are modelled in detail in order to consider sound propagation, deflection, and absorption phenomena etc. The main sound source, sound power level of expressway, is estimated on the basis of measured noise levels at several points of the site. The noise mapping simulation is performed by using ENPro, environmental noise prediction program based on ISO 9613 to analysis the effectiveness of noise barrier. Consequently, the noise barrier is designed to meet an environmental noise standard and satisfy low cost and safety conditions.
