The turbochargers used widely in diesel and gasoline engines are effective devices to reduce fuel consumption and emissions. In this study, the isentropic turbine efficiency of the steady flow in a twin-scroll turbocharger for the passenger vehicle gasoline engine was analyzed. The cold gas test bench was designed and made. The pressure and temperature of the inlet and exit of the turbine were measured at 60,000, 70,000, 90,000, and 100,000rpm under the steady-state flow. The isentropic turbine efficiency was calculated. The efficiency was the range of 0.53 to 0.57. The BSR and expansion ratio were changed from 0.71 to 0.84 and from 1.24 to 1.72, respectively. The isentropic turbine efficiency decreased with increasing BSR and expansion ratio. The operation of only scroll A or B was compared with that of the twin-scroll turbine. The isentropic efficiency of using only scroll B was higher than those of only scroll A at 60,000rpm. The isentropic efficiency of using only scroll A was higher than those of only scroll B at 100,000rpm. Therefore, the twin-scroll turbine used in this study is operating effectively in the wide speed range.

The performance characteristics of a scroll expander is the most important variable for the performance of organic Rankine cycle system. In this paper, the performance characteristics of a scroll expander was identified using 1kW class organic Rankine cycle system with various operating conditions. The ORC system is composed of an evaporator, a scroll expander, a condenser and a working fluid feed pump that uses R245fa as working fluid. The hot water temperature was controlled from $80^{\circ}C$ to $115^{\circ}C$ by the 50kW-class electric water-heater. The maximum isentropic efficiency of the scroll expander was measured about 77%, and the shaft power was measured from 0.5 kW to 1.8 kW according to heat source temperatures.

Turbocharging is becoming a key technology for both diesel and gasoline engines. Regarding gasoline engines, turbocharging can help reduce carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions when used in conjunction with other technologies. This paper presents measurements of the turbine efficiency of pulsating flow in a twin-scroll turbocharger for gasoline engines. A cold gas test bench with a pulse generator was manufactured. The turbine efficiencies were calculated using the measured data of the instantaneous pressure and temperature of the inlet and exit of the turbine. The measurements were carried out at turbine speeds from 60,000 to 100,000 rpm under a pulsating flow of 25.0 Hz and 33.0 Hz. The turbine efficiencies ranged from 0.517 to 0.544. At the pulse frequency, 33.3 Hz, the variations in efficiency were 7.7% and 2.6% at turbine speeds of 60,000 rpm and 100,000 rpm, respectively. The turbine efficiency of the pulsating flow compared to those of steady flow was 7.0% and 3.0% lower at a turbine speed of 60,000 rpm and 100,000 rpm, respectively. The pulsating flow deteriorated the turbine efficiency, but the effects of pulsating flow decreased with increasing turbine speed.

In this work, the open-drive oil free air compressor is modified to activate an organic Rankine cycle system as an expanding machine. The shape of the modified scroll expander case is a rectangular parallelepiped and the size of the case is $0.0394m^3$. The scroll expander is operated in an ORC using R245fa as working fluid with various working conditions for the performance test. The test data points are used to calculate the parameters of the scroll expander semi-empirical simulation model. The simulation results are compared with the experimental results to validate the simulation model.

In a co-rotating scroll compressor, both scrolls rotate on their fixed axes contrary to the conventional orbiting type scroll machine. This implies fixed locations and directions of the gas pressure force and sealing force. Because the tilting moment is mainly caused by interplay between the resultant force of above forces and bearing reaction force, the variation during one cycle is relatively small. Under real operation, this moment is balanced by the restoring moment created by the reaction between the baseplate and thrust bearing or between the scroll tip and baseplate. If these reactions become too large, greater torque is required due to increased friction in addition to the wear of mating parts. Consequently, appropriate study and minimization of tilting moment is important in the design of scroll machines. In this study, taking into account of the small variation of tilting moment during one cycle, we minimize the moment and thrust bearing reaction force by a properly designed back pressure chamber. As a result, for both the driving and driven scrolls, the tilting moment and the reaction force of thrust bearing can be minimized. And the stability is improved for all cases.
The design procedure for centrifugal blower with high inlet resistance is not presented yet. Overall fluid dynamic performance is estimated for comparison between the case of atmospheric inlet condition and the present model. Detail information between blades is prepared by using a commercial program, SCRYU-Tetra. A centrifugal blower with large inlet pressure is adopted in an air purifier having filtering devices. As the inlet residence increases the flow rate of the system is decreased. In parallel, outlet area of the system affects the performance of the system in the sense of flow balance. Consequently, the flow balance between the inlet and outlet becomes an important parameter for the design of the scroll casing for the centrifugal blower with high inlet pressure.

A scroll compressor used in the air conditioning in automobile consists of the fixed scroll and the orbiting scroll. Temperature gradient in the scroll compressor during the operation induces the thermal expansion of two scrolls. Therefore, the gap between scrolls in the initial stage is regarded as an important variable in structural design of the scroll compressor. The coupled thermal-stress analysis was carried out for the scrolls of a scroll compressor. The temperatures of major points of two scrolls in the steady states were referred by the literature of C. Lin. The sequentially coupled thermal-stress analysis is utilized to the heat transfer analysis and the thermal expansion analysis. In the thermal expansion analysis, the contact analysis was considered between the fixed and the orbiting scrolls in order to obtain the penetration distance and the contact pressure between two scrolls. The range of deformation was from 44 to $76{\mu}m$ according to the height of the scroll. The maximum penetration distance of $60{\mu}m$ occurred at the top surface of the fixed scroll in the center of the scroll parts.

The performance of a scroll expander is the most important factor for the efficiency of small scale Organic Rankine cycle waste heat power generation systems. In this research, a scroll compressor was purchased and operated in reverse to function as a scroll expander. With air as a working fluid, a series of performance test were conducted on this expander by varying the inlet and outlet pressure. Secondly, We have tested through 2000 to 3500 rpm rotational speed to find the maximum power and efficiency of the expander. And last, It was observed in the initial experiments that the design of the expander's orbiting scroll wrap partially blocked the fluid intake which may have caused unnecessary flow resistance. To verify this theory, a small part of the scroll wrap was removed and the performance test was redone. It was observed that the lower back pressure assure the higher efficiency and power of expander and the rotational speed that shows maximum adiabetic efficiency of scroll expander is 69% at 2500 rpm. And by modified wrap of the scroll, we could get volume flow rate for 13% to 19% and power for 5% to 18% increased. But the maximum efficiency of the modified scroll was decreased 8%.
