  • Pressure pulsations generated by the blade-tongue interaction induce vibration of the piping systems and the structure connected to pumps, resulting in the severe noise and fatigue fracture. Experiments were made on the natural frequencies of liquid columns in piping systems with a single suction, single stage, centrifugal volute pump. Experimental results show that the natural frequencies of the liquid columns in the pump piping systems depend on the dimensions of the pipes and the impeller shapes, and are not affected substantially by the rate of discharge and the rotating speed of the pump.

  • It is generally known that radial vane blowers with vaneless diffuser may generate mostly only a rotating stall but backward curved vane blowers may do both an impeller and a diffuser rotating stalls. In this study, it was found from the numerical and experimental results that the diffuser rotating stall does not appear in a radial vane because of the suppression for the diffuser stall appearance by occurring of impeller rotating stall in a large flow rate coefficient. The diffuser rotating stalls occurring when the width of diffuser is broaden fur a backward curved vane blower are classified definitely by the diffuser flow rate coefficient defined by adopting the varying diffuser width.

  • The vaneless diffusers are widely used in industrial centrifugal compressors which are required to operate within a wide flow range. When very high pressure gases are handled by centrifugal compressor. rotating stall is a serious problem because of the occurance of large aerodynamic exciting forces. Rotating stall mostly often occurs in the impellers but it can occur in vaneless diffusers as well. In this experimental study, the rotating stall in vaneless diffuser with radial type centrifugal impeller was measured by changing the flow rate with I-type, X-type hotwire. As the result, it was cleared which type of rotating stall of the impeller stall would occur and how many stall cells would appear relating with the flow rate. As the flow rate reduced, the propagation speed of rotating stall was reduced. But the stall cell number unchanged with respect to the flow rate.

  • The flight trajectory of a boomerang is predicted with the momentum theory (actuating disk theory) and the blade element method generally used as tools to analyze in the rotary-wing aerodynamics. Boomerangs made by students are actually compared with the computational results, utilized to get the physical intuition. The transition from helicopter mode to autogyro mode with the gyroscopic precession is observed in numerical analysis and experiment like a 'flying rotor' after the boomerang taking off. The whole system is shown to be highly nonlinear and very sensitive to the initial conditions. Various flight loci may be obtained if we change the parameters.

  • The flow at the impeller exit is important to validate engineering design and numerical analysis of pumps. We installed axisymmetric collector instead of the volute casing, so there is no interaction between the impeller and casing. A hot-film probe and a high response pressure transducer are used to investigate the flow at impeller exit and vaneless diffuser region for design and off design flow rate. For a single suction centrifugal pump of low specific speed, the flow field such as velocity, flow angle, and total pressure are measured by traversing the probe across the vaneless diffuser. These data can be used for performance prediction, design, and numerical analysis of pumps.

  • The flow at the impeller exit is important to validate engineering design and numerical analysis of pumps. However, it is not easy to measure the flow at the impeller exit and evaluate the impeller performance since there is usually strong interaction between the impeller and the volute casing. We installed axisymmetric collector instead of the volute casing, so there is no interaction between the impeller and casing. A 3-hole Cobra probe is used to investigate the flow at impeller exit and vaneless diffuser region for design and on design flow rate. For a single suction centrifugal pump of low specific speed, the flow field such as velocity, flow angle, and total pressure are measured by traversing the probe across the vaneless diffuser. These data can be used for performance prediction, desist and numerical analysis of pumps.

  • The flow analysis method which had been developed for the numerical calculation of 3-dimensional, incompressible and turbulent flow within an axial compressor was extended to the flow field within centrifugal impeller. In this method based on the SIMPLE(Semi Implicit Method Pressure Linked Equations) algorithm, the coordinate transformation was adopted and the standard k-.epsilon. model using wall function was used for turbulent flow analysis. The calculated flow fields have agreed very well with measurement results. Especially, 3-dimensional and viscous flow characteristics including secondary flows, jet-wake flow and decreased pressure rise along impeller passage, which can't be predicted by inviscid Q3D calculation were predicted very reasonably.

  • The procedure for the aerodynamic design of the rotor blades for 10 kW-level HAWT (horizontal axis wind turbine) has been investigated to be practiced systematically. The approximately optimal shape was designed using an inverse method based on the momentum theory and the blade element method. The configuration was tested in the wind tunnel of the Korea Air Force Academy, and the data was compared with those obtained from the real system manufactured from the present design. From this research, the authors established the systematic technolo for wind turbine blades, and set up the technical procedure which can be extended for the future design of middle and large sized wind turbines.

  • The preliminary design of a radial inflow turbine using R134a as the working fluid at 5 kW of power for application to ocean thermal energy conversion (OTEC) is performed to obtain the trends for the efficiency and geometrical dimensions of the turbine. Using input conditions that included a turbine inlet temperature of $25^{\circ}C$, an outlet static pressure of 4.9 bar, and a mass flow rate of 1.16 kg/s, the results of a mean flow analysis show the major dimensions of the turbine, along with an angular velocity of 12,820 rpm. Based on these results, a three-dimensional turbine model is constructed for a computational fluid dynamics (CFD) analysis. The flow characteristics inside the turbine, including the volute and nozzle, are investigated using the CFD software ANSYS CFX. For a pertinent number of nozzle guide vanes, ranging from 10 to 15, the turbine efficiency was higher than 80%, with the highest efficiency shown by a nozzle with 15 guide vanes.

  • Flow patterns were measured in a shrouded centrifugal impeller. The flow rate in measurements was fixed at the value corresponding to a nearly zero incidence at the blade inlet. By using a single slanted hot-wire probe and a Kiel probe mounted on the impeller hub disk, the 3-D relative velocities and the rotary stagnation pressures were measured in seven circumferential planes from the inlet to the outlet of impeller rotating at 700 rpm, and the static pressure distribution along flow passage and the slip factor at impeller outlet were calculated from the measured values. From these measured data, the primary and secondary flows, the wake production and the static pressure rise in the impeller passage were investigated. Furthermore, the secondary flow patterns and the wake's location in this impeller passage were compared with those of the unshrouded impeller.
