This study investigated the construction and operation status of sewer pipes and water-purifier tanks near densely populated areas like large apartment complexes, in order to find out cause for offensive orders. The study results revealed that the main cause arose from the water-purifier tank and public sewer pipes near ordinary residential areas. First, in case of independent water-purifier tanks, the air is forced into the rotten part of large tanks nearby which should be operated in an anaerobic state, so that the tank changes into an aerobic state, or dirty water, which is returned during the sludge return process, falls on the top of the rotten tank, preventing scum from forming within the tank. Such problems cause incompletely purified water in the purifier tank to be discharged, which in turn results in filthy water. Second, in case of public sewer pipes, deteriorated or aging pipes, or the mixture of rain water and dirty water by mixing up combined and separated sewers system can cause foul odors in residential areas. Therefore, offensive odors in residential areas can be radically reduced through the appropriate construction and management of facilities including water-purifier tanks. As well, if more separate sewers are installed as part of an improvement project for public sewer pipes, complaints about foul smell can be minimized.
In this study, lots of methods have been studing to utilize energy and decrease contaminated effluents. There has been great progress on IGCC (Integrated gasification combined cycle) to reduce thermal energy losses. The following results have been conducted from desulfurization experiments using waste shell to remove H$_2$S. According to TGA results, temperature had influenced on H$_2$S removal efficiency. As desulfurization temperature increased, desulfurization efficiency increased. Also, maximum desulfurization efficiency was observed at 80$0^{\circ}C$. Desulfurization was related to calcination temperature. Considering temperature ranges of exhausted gas from hot gas gasification equipment were 400~80$0^{\circ}C$. Thus, desulfurization efficiency would be increased desulfurization temperature situation at highly. Experiments by TGA showed that particle size of sorbents had influenced on desulfurization capacity. Maximum desulfurization capacity was observed at 0.631 mm for oyster and clam. Rest of sorbents showed similar capacity within 0.171~0.335 mm particle size range. So, particle size would be considered. When would be used waste shells as IGCC sorbents. According to the results about desulfurization capacity by TGA, oyster had the best desulfurization capacity among limestone and waste shell. We would be identify to substituted oyster for existing sorbents
Fixed bed desulfurization experiments, to obtain basic data for scale-up was indicated. Oyster was the best among the various sorbents, like the results of TGA. Especially, H$_2$S removal efficiency of uncalcined oyster was the highest. When use oyster as desulfurization sorbents, calcination process was not needed. Thus, high desulfurization efficiency would be expected. Fixed bed reactor experiments were indicated particle size of sorbents. These had influenced on desulfurization capacity. As smaller particle size was found better desulfurization capacity. Large capacity difference was found between 0.613 mm and 0.335 mm. But, differences between 0.335 mm and 0.241 mm was relatively small. As bed temperature increased, H$_2$S removal capacity increased. Therefore, both particle size and bed temperature should be considered to remove H$_2$S by sorbents.
This study investigated the influence of various sintering pressures of ZnS nanoparticles prepared by hydrothermal synthesis performed at 220 ℃ for 20 h. The hydrothermally synthesized ZnS nanoparticles formed a cubic phase. The ZnS nanoparticles were sintered using a hot-press process at 850 ℃ for 2 h under pressures of 10, 20, 30, 40, 50, 60, and 70 MPa. The ZnS ceramics indicate the cubic phase is the major phase and the hexagonal phase is the minor phase. In the ZnS ceramics, as the sintering pressure increased, a decrement in the hexagonal phase was confirmed. When the sintering pressure equaled or exceeded 30 MPa, the transmittance and density improved with reductions in porosity and hexagonal phase. A sintering pressure of 60 MPa delivered the highest transmittance (69.7%).
Air pollutants($SO_2$, NOx, $O_3$ and aerosol number) were measured using an aircraft to investigate the characteristical features of long-range transport of sulfur compounds over the Yellow Sea for the periods of 26~27 April and 7~10 November in 1998. The mean $SO_2$ concentrations of April 26th~27th and November 7th~10th flight were 0.6~1.8 ppb and 0.5~8.3 ppb, respectively, and the sulfur transport was largely limited to the atmospheric boundary layer. Especially, $SO_2$ increased up to 8.3 ppb altogether with the increase of particle number concentraton especially on November 8, 1998. In addition, $O_3$ was remarkably decreased against the increase of $SO_2$and particle number concentrations. This enhanced $SO_2$ concentration occurred in the low level westerlies in association with the anticyclonic flow over Southern China and the cyclonic circulation over Manchuria. Aerosol analyses at Taean site also showed that sulfate concentration increased 2~3 times higher than those of another sampling days, which could suggest possible interactions between aerosol particels and tropospheric ozone. A rigorous evaluation will be possible after the more intensive measurements and quantitative analyses with detailed chemistry model including the postulated heterogeneous mechanism.
Objectives : The aim of this study was to confirm the characteristics of oral malodor patients by evaluating the differences of salivary flow rate, secretory immunoglobulin A (sIgA) level in saliva between the patient and control groups, and the correlation with the tongue coating, volatile sulfur compound (VSC), salivary flow rate and sIgA level in saliva in the patients group. Methods : Forty-seven patients with oral malodor and twenty healthy volunteers were included in this study. Their tongue coating was assessed with the Winkel tongue coating index, and salivary flow rate, sIgA concentrations in saliva and the level of VSC in oral cavity were measured. Results : There were no significant differences of the salivary flow rate and the sIgA level in saliva between the patient and control groups, but there was a significant relationship between the accumulation of tongue coating and the level of VSC in oral cavity. Conclusions : Our results suggest that tongue coating is closely related to oral malodor, but further studies are needed to confirm the relationship between tongue coating and sIgA level in saliva.
$H_2S$ is a flammable toxic gas that can be produced in plants, mines, and industries and is especially fatal to human body. In this study, CuO nanowire structure with high porosity was fabricated by deposition of copper on highly porous singlewall carbon nanotube (SWCNT) template followed by oxidation. The SWCNT template was formed on alumina substrates by the arc-discharge method. The oxidation temperatures for Cu nanowires were varied from 400 to $800^{\circ}C$. The morphology and sensing properties of the CuO nanowire sensor were characterized by FESEM, Raman spectroscopy, XPS, XRD, and currentvoltage examination. The $H_2S$ gas sensing properties were carried out at different operating temperatures using dry air as the carrier gas. The CuO nanowire structure oxidized at $800^{\circ}C$ showed the highest response at the lowest operating temperature of $150^{\circ}C$. The optimum operating temperature was shifted to higher temperature to $300^{\circ}C$ as the oxidation temperature was lowered. The results were discussed based on the mechanisms of the reaction with ionosorbed oxygen and the CuS formation reaction on the surface.
Hydrogen sulfide is a by-product of decayed organic material and is ubiquitously found as an ingredient of manufacturing reagents or as an undesirable by-product of the manufacturing or industrial processing. Hydrogen sulfide is a chemical asphyxiant and interferes with cytochrome oxidase and aerobic metabolism. It has thus been deemed an important cause of work-related sudden death. This gas is particularly insidious due to the unpredictability of its presence and concentration and its neurotoxicity at relatively low concentrations, causing olfactory nerve paralysis and loss of the warning odor. Here, we report two cases of comatose patients presenting after accidental exposure to hydrogen sulfide gas.
Catalyst-assisted plasma system with a DBD (Dielectric Barrier Discharge) reactor was used to remove hydrogen sulfide, which is one of the odorous species in this study. The ${\gamma}-Al_2O_3$ and ${\beta}$-Zeolite catalysts impregnated by Ag, Cu and Mn species were employed as catalysts and their $H_2S$ removal characteristics under plasma irradiation were investigated. From the experimental study, we found that the $H_2S$ removal efficiency increases with decreasing space velocity in the system and increasing specific input energy. Furthermore, ${\beta}$-Zeolite catalysts are efficient to remove $H_2S$ than ${\gamma}-Al_2O_3$ catalysts. Especially, the catalysts impregnated by Ag have higher removal efficiency than other catalysts (Cu, Mn).
With the increasing concern on climate changes and energy shortage, anaerobic membrane bioreactors (AnMBR) become a promising alternative to aerobic processes for domestic wastewater treatment. Two major advantages of AnMBRs are energy production and sludge reduction. Recently, several different configurations of AnMBRs have been proved to produce high quality effluent at reasonable hydraulic retention time and ambient temperature. One of the major problems of the AnMBR is membrane fouling control, and some solutions are already suggested. Other problems to be solved before the full application of the AnMBR are recovery of dissolved methane, management of residual nutrients and sulfide. Considering the potential advantages and future technology development, AnMBR will become major domestic wastewater treatment process in near future.
