  • Everyone has own color preference and the color preference can affect human psychology in various good or bad ways. Especially patients with chronic diseases often have depressed mood to take pills for their disease treatment. Therefore we evaluate the possibility of their color preference to pharmacotherapy in good way which increases the compliance of pharmacotherapy. We performed this study by a Questionnaire survey for total 150 agreed patients at K University hospital from Aug 7 to Sep 30, 2014. Questionnaire survey was performed to choose color of providing color kit (11 different color range kit) depend on each 16 questions which asked the patient characteristics, health condition, general color preference, color preference for medicine and expectation for drug compliance. In results, most preferred color was blue (20%), whereas disliked color was black (30%) in general life. However, most preferred color for pill was white (32%), for syrup was also white (31%) or orange (28%), and for vitamin was yellow (47%). When we asked the possibility of increasing compliance, if the current taking pill color will be changed for your preference color like a candy bar, 50.4% of respondents marked 4 or 5 of like-scale expressing positive opinion on it. In conclusion, compliance is very important to succeed the treating disease and may apply the psychologic application such as each patient color preference for drug compliance in the future.

  • Purpose: We sought to determine the appropriate management modality for clavicle fracture through the review of current literature. Materials and Method: This article provides an overview of the knowledge regarding clavicular fracture in adults, including epidemiology, classification, surgical indication, current technique, and results. We also addressed recent debates: the range of the surgical indication for mid-clavicular fracture and the introduction of anatomically precontoured plate as a new treatment modality. Result and Conclusion: Nonsurgical treatment has been regarded as the first choice in the management of clavicle fractures. Quite recently, mounting evidence has shown that adverse outcomes, after a nonsurgical treatment, such as nonunion and malunion, were more prevalent than previously assumed. Accordingly, the indications for surgical fixation appear to be broadening. However, given that the ideal treatment option remains to be determined, the appropriate treatment of clavicle fractures should be tailored based on careful assessment of individual patient's data and preference.

  • Conventional total hip joint replacement(THR) surgery requires a long incision and long rehabilitation time. The stem used in THR is inserted into the cancellous bone of the femur where it plays the role of the artificial joint. Minimally invasive surgery(MIS) has been devised to reduce muscle damage to patients. In this study, a mechanical stem was developed on the basis of MISto reduce the incision length through the principle of the gear. The mechanical stem consists of six components. A prototypical model for a mechanical stem was fabricated using an acryl-based polymer, and its workability was confirmed. To actualize the mechanical stem, a three-dimensional Bio-CAD modeling technique was applied. The hip joint area based on computed tomography(CT) was reconstructed. The safety of the mechanical stem by applying more load than the weight of a man under virtual surgery environment conditions was confirmed by finite element analysis.

  • When we want to observe and record a patient's EEG in an operating room, the operation of electrosurgical unit(ESU) causes undesirable artifacts with high frequency and high voltage. These artifacts make the amplifiers of the conventional EEG system saturated and prevent the system from measuring the EEG signal. This paper describes a high-performance bipolar EEG amplifier for a CSA (compressed spectral array ) system with reduced ESU artifacts. The designed EEG amplifier uses a balanced filter to reduce the ESU artifacts, and isolates the power supply and the signal source of the preamplifier from the ground to cut off the current from the ESU to the amplifier ground. To cancel the common mode noise in high frequency, a high CMRR(common mode rejection ratio) diffferential amplifier is used. Since the developed bipolar EEG amplifier shows high gain, low noise, high CMRR, high input impedance, and low thermal drift, it is possible to observe and record more clean EEG signals in spite of ESU operation. Therefore the amplifier may be applicable to a high-fidelity CSA system.

  • Sensorineural hearing loss is frequently found in patients with chronic renal failure (CRF). There have been many efforts to elucidate the etiologic factors of hearing loss in patients with CRF. However, there was not any clear identified cause of hearing loss. This study was undertaken to evaluate the activity of mitochondrial respiratory chain (MRC) in CRF patients with hearing impairment. To determine MRC activity, peripheral blood cells were obtained from CRF patients with hearing impairment receiving dialysis and normal subjects without any hearing problems. MRC activity of complex I and complex III was measured by the Trounces method. In MRC activities between the normal subjects group and CRF patients with hearing problems, the complex I and III activities of CRF patients with hearing problems were 63% and 85% compared with normal subjects (p<0.01). These results suggest that the activity of MRC may be implicated in the underlying mechanism of the hearing impairment in CRF patients, through mitochondrial DNA mutations at MRC complex I region with a decrement of MRC activity.

  • Objectives: This study is to assess the correlation of the changes in dental health-related quality of life before, during, and after orthodontic treatments in the patients. Methods: The self-administered survey was conducted in the patients who completed orthodontic treatments living in Seoul and metropolitan areas using Oral Impact on Daily Performances (OIDP) to identify the relevant factors. Data were analyzed with descriptive statistics of variables, independent t-test, one way ANOVA, and multiple regression analysis. Results: From observations of OIDP before, during, and after orthodontic treatment, discomfort associated with three factors including physical, psychological and social ones showed the statistically significant increases during orthodontic treatment than before the treatment; whereas, it was dramatically dropped afterward. Multiple regression analysis to find the influential factors of satisfaction level on orthodontic treatment by setting before, during, and after OIDP as independent variables and satisfaction on orthodontic treatment as a dependent variable revealed that OIDP before orthodontic treatment and after orthodontic treatment significantly affected satisfaction on orthodontic treatment. Conclusions: The above analysis on the change in patients' dental health-related quality of life showed that the quality of life improved after the orthodontic treatment. Accordingly, patients' quality of life and satisfaction level on orthodontic treatment are expected to improve if they strive to maintain healthy dental health through orthodontic treatment.

  • The purpose of this study is to understand the recognition of pet dogs between companion animal majors and non-majors regarding preference, knowledge, competence, role, image, use of pet dogs. A survey was conducted among 164 high school and college, university students from rural areas, medium and large cities, comprised of both companion animal majors and non-majors. The collected data was processed with $X^2$-test to see statistical significance between the two groups. The result showed a significance of (p<0.05) in competence as companion and working dogs and in Animal-Assisted Therapy for physically and psychologically challenged patients. Also, there was a great gap between two groups in recognizing pets and companion animals. Therefore, it is required to develop and implement policy programs that expand people's understanding on roles and competence of companion animals so that they can be identified as a real life companion beyond pets.
