A NUMERICAL STUDY OF THE VENTILATION AND FIRE SIMULATION IN A ROAD TUNNEL (도로터널 환기/제연 시스템 시뮬레이션)

  • In designing a ventilation system of a road tunnel, a possibility of using the system as a smoke control system in case of a tunnel fire has to be considered. In the present study, a numerical simulation on ventilation system is performed considering jet fan operations and moving traffic. A fire-mode operation by reversing some fan operations in case of a tunnel fire is also simulated. The results show that ventilation operation can control the pollutants effectively, and fire-mode operation can control smoke and temperature effectively to prevent a disaster.

  • In this study, we investigate simulation studies to confirm the removal of smoke through ventilation when the subway car is on fire and stopped in an underground subway tunnel, by using Fire Dynamics Simulator (FDS) which is being upgraded by NIST. The structure of subway tunnel and train for simulation modeling are based actual data from Seoul metropolitan subway. The main purpose of this study is to assure the removal efficiency of the ventilation when changing the ventilation capacity between 2.0 m/s and 3.0 m/s. The results of the study shows that carbon monoxide (CO) and carbon dioxide ($CO_2$) are reduced by about 35% as the ventilation capacity is increased by 0.5 m/s. This study also performs the grid sensitivity verification of FDS for improved accuracy of the results. To find the effective size of the grid, three cases are simulated and the results are compared.

  • City natural gas is classified flammable hazardous gas and should be secured according to explosion risk assessment determined by Industrial Standard KS C IEC. In this study, leak size, ventilation grade and effectiveness were adopted to the KS C IEC for risk assessment in natural gas supply system. To evaluate the applicability of the computational fluid dynamics (CFD), the risk assessment was studied for four different conditions using hypothetical volume($V_z$) valuesfrom gas leak experiments, KS C IEC calculation, and CFD simulation.

Effect of Side Openings and Greenhouse Width on the Natural Ventilation Performance (측창 및 온실 폭이 자연환기 성능에 미치는 영향)

  • In summer, the natural ventilation performance for varying greenhouse width is very important in the glasshouses for year round cultivation. The effect of the side openings and greenhouse width on natural ventilation performance was analyzed by simulation. The necessary ventilation rate with different solar radiation transmittance increased significantly when the outside temperature grows higher. The necessary ventilation rate of 40% transmittance was about half of that of 90% transmittance. In consequence, shading effect on temperature control in greenhouse is significant in summer. When the total area of the openings for ventilation is constant, the maximum ventilation rate happens when the area of roof openings is equal to the area of side openings. This maximum ventilation rate is about 3 times of that of the greenhouse with roof openings and without side openings. Therefore, the side openings are advantageous to improve the natural ventilation in greenhouses. As the greenhouse width increases, the influence of side openings on the ventilation rate is becoming smaller. If the natural ventilation rate of the greenhouse with roof and side openings is to become double of that of the roof openings only, the width should be narrower than 38.4m for the Venlo type and 64m for Wide span type.

A study on the effective fire and smoke control in transverse oversized exhaust ventilation (횡류식 선택대배기환기에서의 배연특성에 관한 연구)

  • The smoke control system plays the most important role in securing evacuation environment when a fire occurs in road tunnels. Smoke control methods in road tunnels are classified into two categories which are longitudinal ventilation system and transverse ventilation system. In this study it is intended to review the characteristics of smoke behavior by performing numerical analysis for calculating the optimal smoke exhaust air volume with scaled-model and simulation when a fire occurs in tunnels in which transverse ventilation is applied, and for obtaining the basic data required for the design of smoke exhaust systems by deriving optimal smoke exhaust operational conditions for various conditions. As a result of this study, when the critical velocity in the tunnel is 1.75 m/s and 2.5 m/s, the optimal smoke exhaust air volume has to be more than $173m^3/s$, $236m^3/s$ for the distance of the smoke moving which can limit the distance to 250 m. In addition, in case of uniform exhaust the generated smoke is effectively taken away if the two exhaust holes near the fire region are opened at the same time.
