  • Unlike structures installed on land, the structures installed on the offshore ground must consider long-term cyclic loads such as wave loads, wind loads and tidal loads at sea. Therefore, it is important to analyze the behavior of the ground subjected to long-term cyclic loads in order to design a structure installed on the ocean ground. In this paper, cyclic simple shear tests were performed to analyze the ground behavior for long-term cyclic loads according to the confining pressure, and a three-dimensional design failure curve was prepared that can easily check the failure characteristics according to the confining pressure. As a result of the analysis, it was confirmed that the position of the design failure curve is different depending on the confining pressure even under the same conditions of the cyclic shear stress ratio and the average shear stress ratio, and the number of cyclic loads reaching failure is affected by the confining pressure. From the created 3-D design failure curve under different confining pressure, the tendency and approximate value of the design failure curve according to the confining pressure can be estimated.

  • The use of reinforced earth walls id permanent structures is getting its popularity. Despite a number of advantages of reinforced earth walls over conventional concrete retaining walls, there exists concerns over long-term residual deformations when subjected to repeated and/or cyclic loads, during their service period. In this investigation, the effects of pre-loading in reducing long term residual deformation of reinforced soil structures under sustained and/or repeated loading environment are investigated using a series of reduced-scale model tests. A model pier and a back-to-back (BTB) reinforced soil structures were constructed and tested under various loading and backfilling conditions. The results indicate that the pre-loading technique can be an effective means of controlling residual deformations of reinforced soils under various loading conditions.

  • The load distribution and deflection of large diameter piles are investigated by lateral load transfer method (p-y curve). The emphasis is on the effect of the soil continuity in a laterally loaded pile using 3D finite element analysis. A framework for determining a p-y curve is calculated based on the surrounding soil stress. The parametric studies that take into account the soil continuity are also presented in this paper. Through comparisons with results of field load tests, it is found that the prediction by the present approach is in good agreement with the general trend observed by in situ measurements and thus, represents a significant improvement in the prediction of a laterally loaded pile behavior. Therefore, a present study considering the soil continuity would be more economical pile design.

  • This study was conducted to develop the design methodology of gap slabs for the post-tensioned concrete pavement (PTCP). The gap slabs were considered as unbonded, half bonded, and bonded types. According to the types of the gap slabs, the curling stresses were investigated first under the environmental loads. The stresses due to the vehicle loads were analyzed considering both the single and tandem axles. The method to calculate the prestressing amount was suggested by comparing the combined stresses due to both loads and the allowable tensile stress of concrete. The prestressing amount for the unbonded type gap slab could be designed by considering only the gap slab; however, for the half bonded and bonded gap slabs, the whole PTCP slab should be analyzed to properly design the prestressing amount.

  • The load distribution and deformation of rock-socketed drilled shafts subjected to axial loads are evaluated by a load-transfer method. The emphasis is on quantifying the effect of coupled soil resistance in rock-socketed drilled shafts using the 2D elasto-plastic finite element analysis. Slippage and shear load transfer behavior at the pile-soil interface are investigated by using a user-subroutine interface model (FRlC). It is shown that the coupled soil resistance provides the influence of pile toe settlement as the shaft resistance is increased to an ultimate limit state. The results show that the coupling effect is closely related to the value of pile diameter over rock mass modulus (D/$E_{mass}$) and the ratio of total shaft resistance against total applied load ($R_s$/Q). Through comparisons with field case studies, the 2D numerical analysis reseanably presented load transfer of pile and coupling effect due to the transfer of shaft shear loading, and thus represents a significant improvement in the prediction of load deflections of drilled shafts.

  • Bridge Management System (BMS) requires a more objective condition assessment over the lifespan of a given bridge. Thus, a quantitative assessment model of resistance capacity was developed here to meet the requirement for deteriorated concrete bridges. The model focuses on damage mechanisms of concrete bridges deteriorated by traffic loads and environment factors such as chloride and carbonation attacks. Also, it was applied to a typical concrete slab bridge which was severely damaged due to both load and environmental conditions. It was shown that the proposed quantitative model simulates well the deterioration level considering the two damage criteria.

  • The analysis of the effect of loading on chloride penetration into concrete is very important. In this study, we confirmed that the chloride penetration rates for plain and BFS concrete were increased by 47% and 89% under compressive stress, respectively. The diffusion coefficient of BFS concrete was lower than for conventional concrete with no BFS, no loads, and under stressed states. Therefore, BFS substitution plays an important role in the repression of chloride penetration even under compressive stress. Under compressive stress, the diffusion coefficient for BFS concrete was higher with increasing stress, and this was also the case for plain concrete. However, BFS concrete was strongly influenced by compressive stress in comparison to plain concrete. We investigated the effect of the difference of specific surfaces on the diffusion coefficient. As a result, the larger specific surface of BFS exhibited a lower diffusion coefficient. This tendency was most pronounced under the high stress conditions.

  • This study was conducted to investigate the effect of the slab thickness on the tensioning design and to determine the optimal slab thickness of the post-tensioned concrete pavement (PTCP). The tensile stresses due to the vehicle and environmental loads were obtained using a finite element analysis model and the tensioning stress was calculated employing an allowable flexural strength. The environmental loads of both the constant temperature gradient and the constant temperature difference between top and bottom of the slab were considered. The tensioning designs for various slab thicknesses were performed considering prestressing losses. The comparison results showed that generally as the thickness increased, the number of tendons became larger. Consequently, the design was not economical for a thicker slab thickness. Even though the number of tendons became smaller with an increase in the thickness under the small environmental load, a thicker PTCP slab was not economical because of a higher cost of concrete than that of steel. Therefore, the slab thickness should be kept in minimum within the construction available thicknesses.

  • An optimized spudcan was designed for the Southwestern Sea, an area mostly comprised of sand and soft clay layers. The spudcan was designed using guidelines by SNAME, ISO, and InSafeJIP, as well as the yield surface for combined loads. The probe test method was applied to define a yield surface used in estimating spudcan stability. Numerical analyses that considered vertical, horizontal, and moment loads in Southwestern Sea resulted in a design of 8 m diameter spudcan. Additionally, the empirical equations suggested by previous studies can estimate a reasonable spudcan bearing capacity at shallow depth. Each yield surface calculated from Mohr Coulomb and Hardening soil model showed different shapes, however the yield surface also grew with increasing spudcan diameter. This yield surface is a useful reference, along with site investigation results and published guidelines, to estimate the stability of a spudcan in the Southwestern Sea.
