For the last decade, the hi-directional testing method has been advantageous over the conventional pile load testing method in many aspects. However, because the hi-directional test uses a loading mechanism entirely different from that of the conventional pile load testing method, many investigators and practicing engineers have been concerned that the hi-directional test would give inaccurate results, especially about the pile head settlement behavior. Therefore, a hi-directional load test and the conventional top-down load test were executed on 1.5 m diameter cast-in-situ concrete piles at the same time and site. Strain gauges were placed on the piles. The two tests gave similar load transfer curves at various depth of piles. However, the top-down equivalent curve constructed from the hi-directional load test results predicted the pile head settlement under the pile design load to be about one half of that predicted by the conventional top-down load test. To improve the prediction accuracy of the top-down equivalent curve, a simple method that accounts for the pile compression is proposed. It was also shown that the strain gauge measurement data from the hi-directional load test could reproduce almost the same top-down curve.
Suction buckets are feasible options for offshore foundations to support subsea structures in deep water, enabling suction-induced installation by pumps. Recently, hybrid suction bucket foundations that combine single or multiple suction buckets with a mat foundation have been considered. The foundations effectively increase the load capacity while reducing construction costs. However, there is still insufficient experimental validation of hybrid suction bucket foundations regarding their bearing capacity. Furthermore, research on the horizontal load capacity under low vertical and moment loads is inadequate. In this study, we investigate the feasibility of using a hybrid suction bucket foundation for subsea installations in clay. We considered two types of hybrid suction bucket foundations: a circular mat with a single suction bucket and a square mat with multiple buckets. Centrifuge tests were performed to understand the hybrid suction bucket foundation characteristics under horizontal loads and their corresponding bearing capacity. Particularly, we verified the effect of the mat foundation and bucket embedment depth on the horizontal bearing mechanism and capacities. Results confirmed that the hybrid suction bucket foundation outperforms the single suction bucket.

It is necessary to perform a dynamic analysis to numerically evaluate the effect of blasting on nearby facilities. The blast load time history, which cannot be directly measured, is most often determined from empirical equation. The load has to be adjusted to account for various factors influencing the load and the frequency, but there is not a clear guideline on how to adjust the load. In this study, a series of 2D dynamic numerical analyses that simulates a closely monitored test blasting is performed, from which the blast load that matches the measured vibrations are derived. In the analyses, it is assumed that the hole generated by the blasting is in the form of a circle, and the load was applied normally to the wall of the opening. Special attention was given in selecting the damping ratio for the ground, since it has important influence on the wave propagation and attenuation characteristics of the blast induce waves. The damping ratio was selected such that it matches favorably with the attenuation curve of the measurement. The analyses demonstrate that the empirical blast load widely used in practice highly overstimates the vibration since it does not account for the energy loss due to rock fragmentation. If the empirical load is used without proper adjustment, the numerical analysis may seriously overstimate the predicted vibration, and thus has to be reduced in the analysis.

Vehicle loading is one of the main causes of bridge deterioration. Although WiM (Weigh in Motion) can be used to measure vehicle loading on a bridge, it has disadvantage of high installation and maintenance cost due to its contactness. In this study, a non-contact method is proposed to estimate the vehicle loading history of bridges using deep learning and CCTV images. The proposed method recognizes the vehicle type using an object detection deep learning model and estimates the vehicle loading based on the load-based vehicle type classification table developed using the weights of empty vehicles of major domestic vehicle models. Faster R-CNN, an object detection deep learning model, was trained using vehicle images classified by the classification table. The performance of the model is verified using images of CCTVs on actual bridges. Finally, the vehicle loading history of an actual bridge was obtained for a specific time by continuously estimating the vehicle loadings on the bridge using the proposed method.
Fine-size exposed aggregate portland cement concrete pavements (FEACP) have surface texture of exposed aggregate by removing upper 2$\sim$3mm mortar of surface of which curing is delayed by using delay-setting agent. FEACPs have advantages of maintaining low-noise and adequate skid-resistance level during the performance period than general portland cement concrete pavements. It is necessary to ensure the durability environmental loading to prevent unexpected distress during the service life of FEACP. In the process of curing, volume change accompanied change in by moisture and temperature could be an important cause of crack in concrete to construct for successful FEACP, The use of chloride containing deicer may accelerate defects of concrete pavement, such as crack and scaling. This study aim to evaluate environmental loading resistance of FEACP, based on the estimation of shrinkage-crack-control-capability by moisture evaporation and scaling by deicer in freeze-thaw reaction.

Better understanding of in-situ mechanical behavior of pavement foundations is very important to predict long-term effects on the system performance of transport infrastructure. For this purpose resilient stiffness characterization of geomaterials is needed to properly adopt such mechanistic analysis under both traffic and environmental loadings. In this paper in-situ monitoring data from KHC test road were used to analyze the non-linear response using finite element method for a selected constitutive model of foundation geomaterials, and the results were compared with the field data.

The satellite is exposed to the severe vibration environments such as random vibration environments such as random vibration, acceleration, shock, and acoustics during launch ascent and transportation. It is also faced with various space environments such as thermal vacuum, radiation and microgravity during the mission life. The satellite should be designed, manufactured, assembled and tested to be able to endure in these harsh environments. This paper addresses the results of the structural and thermal design and analyses for the HAUSAT-1 picosatellite which is scheduled to launch in the first quarter of 2005 by Russian launch vehicle "Dnepr". The qualification vibration and thermal vacuum tests have been conducted and passed at the satellite level to ensure that the HAUSAT-1 mechanical system was designed to be stable with enough margin.

Mechanically fastening FRP (MF-FRP) strips using nails and anchors, has been shown to provide a more ductile behavior to the strengthened structural element than using bonded FRP. To further advance the state of the knowledge on this strengthening method, the current study examined environmental effects for six months on MF-FRP beams. Reinforced concrete beams strengthened with mechanically fastened FRP strips and subjected to sustained loads for six months were exposed to outdoor weather and constant high temperatures ($40^{\circ}C$). For comparison, the behavior of RC beam with and without sustained loads was evaluated. Results from flexural tests did not show any significant degradation or change of failure mode as a result of sustained load and of environmental effects such as high temperatures and outdoor weather over a period of six months. Failure of the beams was governed by FRP delamination followed by concrete crushing as not much load applied to the nail and anchors because of slip effects.

RC (Reinforced Concrete) member has varying service life due to varying diffusion characteristics with loading conditions even if it is exposed to constant exterior conditions. In the paper, quantitative parameters are obtained through adopting the previous results for effects of compressive, tensile, and cold joint on chloride diffusion in OPC (Ordinary Portland Cement) and GGBFS (Ground Granulated Blast Furnace Slag) concrete. Service life is evaluated in RC simple beam with 10.0m of span through increasing loading from self weight (2.5kN/m) to the loading to cracking moment (5.5kN/m). In OPC concrete without cold joint, service life changes to 89.4% for tensile region and 101% for compressive region with loadings while GGBFS concrete has 80.0% and 106%, respectively. For cold joint area, GGBFS concrete shows much reduced service life to 82~80% in compressive region and 69~61% in tensile region, which is caused by the lower diffusion in normal condition but relatively higher increasing cold joint effect than OPC concrete.

A floating dock is the main facility for launching ships. In the early 2000s, ship-launching technology using floating docks was developed in Korea. Therefore, the opportunity to participate in new construction projects without investment in dry docks has expanded. In this paper, a basic calculation for the safe mooring of a floating dock was performed, and a mooring system was designed based on this. This study was conducted considering the typhoon situation, which is the most serious environmental requirements of Daebul Pier, a site to be installed and operated, for a floating dock. The design load was calculated by wind load, tidal load, and wave-induced load in accordance with the internationally accepted standards. After performing the initial arrangement of the mooring line of the floating dock using the existing mooring facilities of Daebul Pier, the minimum breaking load for each mooring line was calculated for the given load. Based on the calculation, the mooring arrangement was modified to minimize the breaking load, and a final specification of each mooring line was selected.
