  • An extensometer system to measure strain and displacement of cylindrical fatigue specimen in a autoclave of high temperature and high pressure environment has been developed by KEPRI. The extensometer reads the displacement caused by fatigue loads at the target length of the specimen installed inside the autoclave. The performance of the extensometer were tested at 15MPa, $315^{\circ}C$ of a operating pressurized water reactor. Two LVDT's of magnet type were connected to the extensometer and used for converting the fatigue displacement to electronic signal. The device is being used for developing environmental fatigue curve of CF8M cast austenitic stainless steel (CASS) in the test condition of low cycle and low strain. This paper introduces the background and results of the development.

  • Austenitic Stainless Steels (ASSs) are widely used as structural materials in the pressurized water reactors (PWRs) because of their superior mechanical properties and corrosion resistance. However, it is well known that ASSs are susceptible to the environmental assisted cracking (EAC) such as environmental assisted fatigue (EAF) during the long term operation. There have been extensive tests and researches to understand the extent and the mechanisms of environmental effects. In this paper, the world-wide EAF test results of ASSs are introduced including those of Korean test programs. The suggested EAF mechanisms of ASSs are also discussed. Finally, the areas of further research to resolve the issue of EAF are suggested.

  • Fatigue damage analysis of ships includes parameters considering operational factors. Due to these operational variables, there is a difference between the fatigue damage estimated during the design stage and the actual accumulated fatigue damage. Likewise, there are various loading conditions for the real container ships, but at design stage the fatigue damage is calculated by applying the representative loading conditions. Moreover, although the difference in fatigue damages is expected when the actual and design loading conditions are applied, there are few studies on the contributions of the fatigue damage based on the loading conditions of container ships. In this paper, fatigue contributions were investigated from various cargo weight distributions. The hull girder loads calculated through seakeeping analysis and fatigue damages obtained by performing spectral fatigue analysis were identified under new loading conditions. As a result, it was found that the variation of cargo weight distribution in the container ship brought about changes in the hull girder loads and fatigue damage by affecting the hull girder stress.

  • The significance of pilots' fatigue and the attributed risk management had continuously increased over time as the airline industry expanded. Research and legislation efforts associated with pilot fatigue are being taking place actively all over the world. In the developed world such as the United States and European Union etc., the airline pilot fatigue is already being managed by considering the show up time, the number of take offs and landings made, resting period, jet lag etc., when computing flight duty time. In Korea, the flight duty time is only limited by the total number of hours per given period regardless of the flight conditions and environment. Such lack of regulation demand development of a fatigue management program. According to the survey taken from the airline pilots in Korea, it has been found that acquiring foreign policies directly may in turn, increase the risk of fatigue. This research suggest future studies regarding fatigue management program adapted exclusively to Korean domestic flight environment and culture.

  • Electronic devices have been evolved to be mechanically flexible that can be endured repetitive deformation. This evolution emphasizes the importance of long-term reliability in metal wiring connecting electronic components, especially under bending fatigue in compressed environments. This study investigated methods to enhance adhesion between copper (Cu) and polyimide (PI) substrates, aiming to improve the reliability of copper wiring under such conditions. We applied oxygen plasma treatment and introduced a chromium (Cr) adhesion layer to the polyimide substrate. Our findings revealed that these adhesion enhancement methods significantly affect compression fatigue behavior. Notably, the chromium adhesion layer, while showing weaker fatigue characteristics at 1.5% strain, demonstrated superior performance at 2.0% strain with no delamination, outperforming other methods. These results offer valuable insights for improving the reliability of flexible electronic devices, including reducing crack occurrence and enhancing fatigue resistance in their typical usage environments.

  • Ship and offshore structures, those are to be used under the seawater conditions are prone to corrosion. In this research, the effect of rust existence on the fatigue strength at structural member of ship and offshore structure was investigated. For this purpose, fatigue tests for the rust removed specimen were conducted. In addition, the comparison of fatigue strength between rust removed specimen and rusted specimen was conducted. With these test results, fatigue strength share effect was investigated. Finally, at this research, it was found that there is fatigue strength share effect on the rust. In comparison of fatigue strength reduction factor, fatigue strength of the rust removed specimen is 18.1% lower than that of the rusted specimen. From the above, it was known that as far as there are not any harmful ingredients in it, rust on the steel plate is beneficial in an aspect of fatigue strength.

  • APR1000(Advanced Power Reactor 1000) was developed to export 1000MW nuclear power plants by adding ADFs(Advanced Design Features) including 60 years design life, local frequency control operation, 0.3g SSE, etc. to OPR1000(Optimized Power Reactor 1000). In this paper, environmental fatigue analyses for the reactor vessel in APR1000 have been performed as per Reg. Guide 1.207. Outlet nozzle, which has a relatively high cumulative usage factor in the reactor vessel was evaluated and a structural integrity is maintained under the reactor coolant environment.

  • The high temperature fatigue tests were performed using the specimens taken from Cr-Mo-V steel, widely used as thermal power plant turbine materials for examination fatigue behavior of materials in power plants which have been operated for long periods. The fatigue tests at high temperature were performed at the various temperature and applied stress. The results obtained are summarized as follows : The fatigue crack length increases and the fatigue life decreases with temperature and applied stress according to the same number of stress cycle. The fatigue crack propagation and the fatigue life were much influenced by temperature and applied stress.
