  • In this study, experiments on total digestion and sequential extraction were conducted in order to understand total metal contents, and mobility, bioavaliability and toxicity of metals in marine dredged sediment from Busan New Port. The total concentrations of arsenic and heavy metals in the dredged sediment were relatively low as follows: Al (2.36~2.96 wt.%), As (1.6~3.3 mg/kg), Ba (30.0~33.8 mg/kg), Cd (0.12~0.18 mg/kg), Cr (27.5~35.0 mg/kg), Cu (11.3~15.0 mg/kg), Fe (2.91~3.51 wt.%), Mn (324~408 mg/kg), Ni (18.8~23.8 mg/kg), Pb (23.8~31.3 mg/kg), and Zn (70.0~86.3 mg/kg). In addition, it was found that most of Al (87.5~95.9%), As (74.1~93.8%), Ba (71.8~77.6%), Cr (69.5~94.3%), Cu (50.0~78.7%), Fe (70.8~87.6%), Ni (64.5~75.3%), Pb (53.4~64.3%), and Zn (62.5~81.7%) existed in the residual fraction, meaning that those elements might come from natural sources. On the other hand, Cd and Mn were present mainly in the non-residual fraction. Due to low concentrations of toxic heavy metals and high percentage of residual fraction, it could be possible to reuse the dredged sediment for bricks, pavement base material, etc.

  • Recently, there have been various domestic construction activities related to the reclamation of the dredged soils to expand the land use. However, the reclaimed grounds made of the dredged soils cause various problems due to highly compressible and low shear strength nature. Particularly, this nature induces huge problems in case of the harbor facilities and road construction on the reclaimed sites. Furthermore, in the reclamation activities, the marine dredged soils are often used instead of the well sorted sand, which induces problems of compressibilities. Therefore, in this study, the mechanical characteristics of artificial soil mixture of kaolinite representing the marine dredged soils and the pond ash. A large consolidometer is designed and manufactured to produce the artificial soil mixture. To represent various mixing ratio between the fly ash and bottom ash in the pond ash, six samples with the same stress history are made with different mixing ratio among kaolinite, bottom ash and fly ash. Isotropically consolidated and undrained compression tests are performed to investigate the shear characteristics of soil mixtures. Based on the experimental results, as the components of mixed ash increase, the friction angle increase and the cohesion values decrease. Also, the porepressure parameters at failure, Af increase with the mixing components of the pond ash. The portion of bottom ash has more impact on the shear behavior than that of fly ash.

  • An experimental study was carried out to investigate the recycling possibility of waste oyster shells, which induce environmental pollutions by piling up out at the open or the temporary reclamation. The purpose of this study is to develope eco-friendly binder using waste oyster shells, and to reinforce dredged soils fur soft soil improvement. In this paper, a series of laboratory tests including compressive strength tests were performed to evaluate strength characteristics of soils treated by developed binder with different water content of dredged soils, mixing rates of binder, curing days. Based on test results, eco-friendly binders manufactured from waste oyster shells were estimated as good resource materials for soft soil improvements.

  • In this study, calculation results of sediments yield prediction models were compared with the amount of dredging data for the Inje, Gangwon mountain region of Korea. MSDPM and LADMP were used as a sediments prediction model which was calibrated and modified to calculate the sediments yield of Korean mountain region. Both sediments yield prediction models were modified by using Threshold Maximum Rainfall Intensity and Total Minimum Rainfall Intensity and correction coefficient. After comparing with the amount of dredging, it was found that results of MSDPM is more accurate than the results of LADMP. Difference of results of MSDPM and the amount of dredging is 27.6% and difference of results of LADMP and the amount of dredging is 50.6%. Both sediments yield prediction models which were calibrated in this study can be used to calculate the sediments yield for the Korean mountain region.

  • This article is a case study for the example of the foundation design, in the project area of the silty sand layer that is spread shallowly with loose status, to make the site for a structure and build it up. The site is located on the dredged and reclaimed land in Gun-San and In-Cheon that is formed the silty sand layer with loose status range around 10 meters underground level, the solid ground for the lower pile is shown around 20 meters underground level. Therefore, this area has to be done by ground improvement when applying for the shallow method of foundation. Dynamic compaction method considering the conditions of the design loads in each zone has to be decided through comparative review on the method of foundations and pilot field test was conducted, and drilling investigation and plate bearing test were achieved as well. The analysis results of the tests prove that stability against bearing capacity was acquired by ground improvement effect.

  • Organic matter in dredged soil has a lot of engineering problem in ground including a large settlement, crack propagation, low bearing capacity and low friction angle. From an agricultural point of view, however, organic matter contributes greatly soil quality and plant health. This paper investigated the relationship between engineering and germination characteristics of stabilized mixture consisting of different ratios of organic content (0 %, 10 %, 20 %, 30 %) for recycling dredged soil including organic matter. Several series of laboratory tests such as flow test, unconfined compressive test and consolidation test were performed to find out engineering characteristics. pH, percent of germination and growth of plants were also measured to investigate the germination characteristics. The experimental results indicated that, as organic content increased, unconfined compressive stress decreased and compression and swelling indices increased. However, percent of germination and plant growth increases as organic content increases.

  • This study was to investigate the reduction of hydration heat by utilizing industrial by-products such as BFS(Blast Furnace Slag). DM(Dredged Mud) was used by parent soil and Ordinary portland cement was used by cementing material. Additive added to reduce the heat of hydration was BFS. From the results of experiment, hydration heat was decreased in accordance with the addition of BFS. The reason was that surface of BFS coated with aluminosulfate. Initial uniaxial strength was low, neither was not long term uniaxial strength. It was concluded that silica rich layer($H_2SiO_4^{4-}$) in solid phase early in the reaction of hydration was difficultly moved in liquid phase due to the increase of ZP(Zeta Potential). However, the ZP in the later hydration was decreased due to the acceleration of mobility of silica rich layer($H_2SiO_4^{4-}$). Therefore, long term physical properties such as uniaxial strength revealed.

  • Contaminated sediments are the actual cause for deterioration of coastal-ecosystem. So the developed countries have been in the process of making an effort to develop new techniques for monitoring and solving this problem since 1960. In this research, suction type pump dredging system of pilot size for collecting the filth from the seabed has been designed and manufactured that can prevent or minimize the secondary pollution by filth diffusion. For the practical use, the application possibility of the developed system has been checked through a system performance test. And, the evaluation of system performance according to the underwater body type has been carried out for system optimization by using CFD. The performance tests for checking the efficiency of sediment collecting system are done under two conditions i.e. when the system is non-operational and when the system is self-propelled. The results of this research showed the possibility of the development of dredging system to remove just the upper parts of filth from seabed.

  • This paper presents the results of a numerical investigation on applicability of Light-weighted Foam Soils (LWFS) consisted of dredged soils for soft ground improvement. The engineering properties of LWFS were comprehensively investigated based on the previous experimental tests. And three dimensional numerical models which reflect soft ground conditions were adopted to evaluate the applicability of LWFS compared to SCP and DCM. A number of cases were analyzed using a stress-pore pressure coupled model. The results indicated that LWFS method enables to reduce more settlement, lateral flow and heaving than SCP method and enable to reduce more residual settlement than DCM method. Also it was revealed that such effect depends on the properties of LWFS such as unit weight, unconfined compressive strength, deformation modulus and Poisson's ratio.

  • In this study, settling experiment was performed about cohesive and sandy soils among representative sample expected to dredge and dump for analysis of settling and consolidation characteristic. The analysis showed the definite difference between cohesive soils and sandy soils of relationships with settling and consolidation coefficient, a water content, interfacial heights. But directly after a dredged reclamation, prediction results about a initial volume change showed that cohesive soil of a water content change was decreased rapidly as time goes by, but sandy soils made no difference in a water content change. Results were compared and analyzed with the settling and consolidation coefficient and a initial settling velocity by real soil amounts for a feasibility check about test conditions applied to these experiment: we judge that test conditions are appropriate, each material by such these analyses suggests the scope of settling and consolidation coefficient, average and the representative relational formula.
