  • The study investigates the number and proportion of questions in each area by examining Chemistry I questions from the College Scholastic Ability Test from 2019 to 2022. The analysis was conducted using a three-dimensional framework that included key concepts in chemistry, behavioral domains in chemistry, and behavioral domains in mathematics. The results indicated that Chemistry I questions on the College Scholastic Ability Test had a relatively even distribution of questions across core individual topics, but highly difficult questions were predominantly biased toward stoichiometry. In terms of the behavioral domains in chemistry, there was a remarkably low proportion of questions related to problem recognition and hypothesis establishment, as well as designing research and implementing research. Conversely, highly difficult questions were more inclined towards drawing conclusions and evaluations. Regarding behavioral domains in mathematics, there was a limited number of questions addressing heuristic reasoning and deductive reasoning. On the other hand, high-difficulty questions favored internal problem-solving ability. Additionally, certain key concepts in chemistry and behavioral domains in chemistry exhibited a strong correlation with specific behavioral domains in mathematics. This characteristic was particularly evident in questions that encompassed higher-dimensional behavioral domains in mathematics, which students tend to find challenging.

  • The goal of this study is to investigate the features of Korean eighth graders' achievement and its trend in Chemistry in TIMSS 2011 and TIMSS 2015, and to explore its implications for Korean science curriculum and in teaching science. With three science educators and six science teachers, we analyzed the characteristics of Korean eighth graders' achievement in Chemistry by test-curriculum matching analysis. According to the trend analysis of science topics with released items for Chemistry in TIMSS 2015, Korean students' percentage for correct answers has dropped in topics such as regularities in chemical reactions, oxidation-reduction, etc. since these topics are covered after the ninth grade in the 2009 revised curriculum. For science cognitive domains, Korean students showed weaknesses in 'applying' domain in TIMSS 2015. Based on the results, we suggested implications for improvement in middle school chemistry curriculum and how to improve science teaching and learning for students' better science competencies and real-world application of science knowledge.

  • The purpose of this study is to compare and analyze the science curriculum of Korea and Estonia with a focus on the chemistry domain, and draw implications for reference when revising the next curriculum. To this end, the overall curriculum design centered on science subjects and the core concepts of chemistry covered in subjects corresponding to the common curriculum of the two countries were compared. As a result of the analysis, first, Estonia specifically suggested how the core competencies suggested in the general lecture were specifically connected to science subject. In addition, there was a characteristic that the inquiry function, attitude, and value were specifically presented in the curriculum document. Second, as a result of analyzing the core concepts of chemistry, most of the concepts dealt with in Korea were also dealt with in Estonia. However, Estonia has a tendency to deal more qualitatively with broader concepts. The concepts covered in the chemistry subject exceeded the level of the common curriculum in Korea, but this subject also had the characteristic of attempting a qualitative approach.

  • This study analyzed the uses of visual representations of particles in the matter units of the middle school science textbooks developed under the 2015 Revised National Curriculum. The material units in four textbooks were divided into explanation, inquiry, and evaluation sections, and visual representations of particles presented in the science textbooks were analyzed by the use type, the activity type, and the level of activity. In the explanation section, the visual representations of particles were mainly presented in the auxiliary use type, and in the inquiry and evaluation section, they were mainly presented in a direct use type. In terms of the activity types of the direct use of visual representations of particles, the interpreting activity was mainly presented in the explanation and evaluation sections, while the generating activity and completing activity were presented in relatively higher proportion in the inquiry section than the other two sections. In terms of activity level, identifying was the most common activity level in the explanation section, and inferring was the most common activity level in the inquiry and evaluation sections. Based on these results, the implications for the presentation and uses of visual representations of particles in science textbooks are discussed.

  • Chemistry is the subject which includes properties, change, and composition of matter. Chemistry has the system which explains observable properties and change with microscopic level, it explains them using scientific theory and laws. In the national-level curriculum, the properties and changes of matter are continuously dealt with from elementary school to high school, and the curriculum are organized so that students could strengthen their understanding about matter. In other words, understanding of the properties and changes of matter is the base to explain everyday life with the view of chemistry, and these two are classified as domains of chemistry in the 2015 revised science curriculum. In this study, we confirmed students' understanding about properties of matter and change of matter, through the analysis about results of the National Assessment of Educational Achievement (NAEA). For that purpose, this study analyzed the 12 items about properties of matter, and 19 items about change of matter, which were used in the NAEA from 2015 to 2019. According to the results of classifying and analyzing questions according to the core concept, the understanding about the two domains significantly changed between the proficient achievement-level students and basic achievement-level students. Depending on the achievement-level, there was a difference in explaining the phenomenon by using the perspective of particles, and by associating scientific concepts and models, or there was a difference in understanding the inquiry related to these two domains. Based on this analysis, this study discussed some implications to be improved on teaching-learning for 'properties of matter', and 'change of matter'.

  • This study was to analyze the articulation between chemistry contents of science textbooks at elementary and middle school level, to survey students ? perceptions on chemistry concepts, to establish guidelines for science textbooks that not only meet the needs of learners but also fit in a coherent way. In order to do this, we analyzed links of the aims and the organization of chemistry contents of elementary and middle school science textbooks, we also surveyed students' perceptions on chemistry concepts students had retained. The study revealed that the 6th middle school curriculum was almost a duplicate of the elementary school syllabus. And there was no interrelation between the organization of chemistry contents and the aim of the chapter which built up a logical picture of the world at a molecular level. It was also found that the lack of coherence between science textbooks in elementary and middle school was a major cause of student difficulty.
