  • Chemical weathering of forest soils can reduce atmospheric $CO_2$ concentration over geologic time scales, providing many essential elements for life. Although many studies have been conducted on the effects of elevated atmospheric $CO_2$ on forest carbon storage using open top chambers and FACE (Free air $CO_2$ enrichment) facilities since the 1990s, studies on chemical weathering of forest soils under elevated $CO_2$ are relatively rare. Here I review on how elevated atmospheric $CO_2$ can affect the chemical weathering of forest soils and suggest directions on future research. Despite the recent advances in chemical weathering of forest soils under elevated atmospheric $CO_2$, it is still not clear how the large volume of forest soils would react under the condition. Future studies on weathering of forest soils covering large areas from the tropics to the polar regions with carefully monitored pre-treatment data would provide key information on how soils, the Earth's life sustaining engine, change under climate change.

  • The Uiseong Tapriri Five-Storied stone pagoda has occurred exfoliation, granular disintegration and discoloration by physical and chemical weathering factors with the major deterioration occurring due to efflorescence by salt. According to the results of SEM-EDS and X-ray diffraction analysis, salts consists of gypsum, taranakite. Artificial salt weathering tests were carried out using the same type of rocks as those in the stone pagoda. The test results showed that efflorescence occurred on the surface of the rock, and that exfoliation and granular disintegration occurred inside the rock due to salt crystallization.

  • This study examines the processes of rock weathering and tafoni formation targeting tafoni at Mt. Cheonsaeng, Gumi-si, Gyeongsangbuk-do. In the study area, a frequency of tafoni is high in conglomerate and conglomeratic sandstone among regional sedimentary rocks, which means that an initial stage of the formation begins a breakaway of gravel from bedrock and also exfoliation from rock surface. Geomorphologically tafoni have intensively been developed at the southfacing slope with exposed rocks, which means that its formation was favorably controlled by environmental conditions including strong influences of mechanical weathering in winter and chemical weathering in summer times. The results of measuring water content at a tafoni-bearing rock surface using GIS interpolation analysis indicate that moisture rate in/around tafoni is higher than the periphery. Thus, it is considered that moisture distribution at a rock surface plays a role in its formation. Analysis of percipitation and secondary minerals induced by chemical weathering is in progress.

  • Oxidation of pyrite has caused a serious environmental problem such as the acidification of soil and surface water. The mineralogical change of acid sulfate weathering of hydrothermally altered andesite which contained 11.8% of pyrite and was exposed in atmosphere by lay out works for a residential area and a golf course was studied using X-ray diffraction (XRD) and electronmicroscopes. Ferrihydrite, jarosite, and an unidentified water soluble phase were observed as weathering products of the andesite. Under electronmicroscopes, showed aggregate of platy microcrystals; jarosite was platy morphology: water soluble Phase was columnar. Morphology of fresh Pyrite in the andesite changed from pyritrohedron to cubic in its frequency with increasing its particle size. The drainage water was acidic (pH 3.5) and in an equilibrium state with both ferrihydrite and jarosite.

  • When rocks are exposed to the near surface environment, they are broken down due to several factors such as physical and chemical weathering during the geologic time. The feldspar and mica, which are the main rock-forming minerals, are easily broken down relative to other minerals. In order to reproduce some weathered minerals similar to the ones exist in natural weathered granite, there was an experimental interaction between fresh minerals and acidic solution. In low pH condition, biotite initially dissolved and its surface structure broke down, whereas plagioclase dissolved and had a needle-shaped dissolved morphology with some precipitates composed of Al element. The minerals were deeply dissolved in a strong acid condition, showing the prominent dissolved structure. Some etch pits and dissolved textures developed on the natural mineral surfaces are similarly found in our experiment, suggesting the development of mineral dissolution and weathering texture by the influence of the mineral's intrinsic nature.

  • Since many geotechnical structures are constructed on a weathered granite layer, it is important to evaluate their characteristics. As a seismic design is the more important nowadays, the demands to estimate a shear wave velocity (VS) based on acceptable methods are increasing. In this study, an empirical equation predicting VS of the weathered granite layer is suggested based on the nonlinear multiple variable regression analysis whose independent variables are both SPT (Standard penetration test)-N60 and chemical weathering index. It is concluded that the accuracy of the empirical equation estimating VS of the weathered granite layer increases when it considers the chemical weathering index as an additional independent variable compared to the result of simple regression analysis using only N60.

  • This study deals with the petrographic examination of aggregates(ASTM C 295) which is one of the methods to diagnose the quality of aggregates for concrete artifacts. A number of examinations including size and sieve analysis, test on the coating material, description of the weathering and contamination condition, petrographic description, and qualitative and quantitative analyses on the rocks and minerals potential to alkali-aggregates reactivity are carried out to examine the quality of aggregates. Petrographic description method examined on the fluvial aggregates from Maewhacheon A, B area, Uljin-gun, Kyungnam province shows that weathering grade ranges from F(fresh) to WS(slightly weathered) and coating material and contamination are not in a harmful condition. The weight percentage of the alkali-aggregates reactive minerals or structurally unstable rocks of the aggregates from study area covers 26% and 19% of all aggregates, respectively. So it is necessary to further identify their quality through the chemical(ASTM C 289) and mortar-bar method (ASTM C 227).

  • A physical characteristics and chemical compositions change by weathering on the granite were examined for the conservation treatment of the Mireuksaji temple stone pagoda. The natural weathered granite was collected from the Mt. Mireuk, and divided into the classification standards based on weathering degrees and strength measured by rock-test hammer. The results from comparison of the strength measured by undestructive rock-test hammer and the strength values converted from ultrasonic velocity showed that each strength measurement value was proportionate. The water absorption of the sample was 1.68 to 0.20%. The F-type of fresh rock was not naturally saturated and the WW-type was naturally saturated but took quite a long time. The water absorption was increased gradually in order of SW-type, the MW-type and the HW-type according to weathering condition. The CW-type samples showed the highest water absorption among the weathered classification samples. Through dyeing test, it was found out that only the feldspar was dyed out of the F-type and the WW-type. The SW-type and the MW-type were distinguished by the fact that plagioclase being dyed. And dyed area was expanded to quartz crack in HW-type and CW-type. Physical change by weathering of the rock-forming minerals could be classified with 3 grades. Through the XRD analysis, albite among the rock-forming mineral showed remarkable decrease. SEM-EDX analysis of the component change in the rock-forming minerals such as biotite, plagioclase, and orthoclase, showed that in case of highly-weathered grade samples compared with fresh samples, contents of the $Al_2O_3$, $K_2O$, $Na_2O$ increase and CaO, MgO decrease in the biotite, the CaO, $K_2O$ increase and $Na_2O$ decrease in the plagioclase, the $Al_2O_3$ a little increase and $K_2O$, $Na_2O$ decrease in the orthoclase. The results of extracted cation analysis using the powder samples of each weathering grade, the CaO, $Na_2O$, $K_2O$ and MgO are highly chemical variations in rock forming minerals and positive variation show high in the weathering grade of the WW-type and CW-type. This research will be used as an importance data to establish a plan for conservation treatment of composed stone in the Mireuksaji temple stone pagoda.

  • Because the stone cultural properties located outdoors, they have been altered and deteriorated in external appearance due to environmental factors such as acid rain, extreme change in temperature, and salts. Damage to stone cultural properties is accelerated particularly due to recent industrial development and environmental pollution. An experimental study was conducted to evaluate the effect of environmental contaminants(sea water and air pollutants such as, $SO_2$, NO, $CO_2$) on the weathering of granite. And as part of the developing of conservation method, $TiO_2$ catalyst was prepared and tested. After expose a granite to sea water and air pollutants, the mineral compositions of the tested granite surface were lower then that of the fresh granite. And absorption capacity of the weathered granite was steadily increased. From these results, it was expected that granite could be weathered by sea water and air pollutants. For the $TiO_2$ coated granite, absorption capacity was slightly enhanced compared to the $TiO_2$ non-coated granite. Therefore, the $TiO_2$ coating method tested in this study considered to be a viable method to assist in the conservation of granite from environmental contaminants.
