  • Frankliniella occidentalis and Thrips palmi are economically important pests of cucumber. The chemicals used to control them can be effective; however, they should not be used frequently on cucumbers that are consumed raw. Banker plants were selected to increase the control efficiency of Orius laevigatus, a natural enemy that can replace the chemicals. The hatching rate, emergence rate, nymph developmental period, survival rate, and reproductive capacity (fecundity and oviposition period) of O. laevigatus for four plants (moss rose, basil, broad bean, and cucumber) were investigated. The density of O. laevigatus on two selected banker plants was investigated in a cucumber greenhouse. The hatching rate of O. laevigatus eggs was highest at 92% in moss rose; however, there was no significant difference in survival rates between moss rose and basil. The fecundity and oviposition period of O. laevigatus were better in moss rose than in basil, with no significant difference between them. The flowering period of basil was longer than that of moss rose, from April to September. Therefore, basil has potential value as a banker plant for O. laevigatus and is expected to increase the biological control effect of O. laevigatus.

  • The concept of integrated pest management (IPM) first developed in the 1950s, and the concept of economic control via pest management was established in the 1960s. Research on IPM began in the United States and Europe, and IPM studies in Korea started with citrus insects and paddy field pests following the distribution of high-yield varieties of rice. Apple IPM in Korea began with research on pest control using chemical pesticides and pesticides resistant to insect pests, studies on the ecology of insect pests and their natural enemies, and the exploitation of sex pheromones on insect pests. Since the 1990s, IPM research and field projects have been carried out simultaneously for farming households. In the 2000s, the development of pest monitoring and forecasting models centered on mating disturbances, database programs for pests, and networks for sharing information. IPM technology has expanded via the development of unmanned forecasting systems and automation technologies in the 2010s.

  • To date, chemical managements of plant bacterial diseases are complicated by limitations on use of antibiotics in agriculture, antibiotic resistance development, and limited efficacy of alternative control agents. In this study, thus, we performed screening of eco-friendly farming material (notice no. 2-4-064) containing tannic acid as new antibacterial-activity against 7 plant bacterial pathogens: Pectobacterium carotovorum subsp. carotovorum (Pcc), Ralstonia solanacearum (Rs), Acidovorax avenae subsp. citrulli (Aac), Xanthomonas cirti pv. citri (Xcc), Erwinia pyrifoliae (Ep), Clavibacter michiganensis subsp. michiganensis (Cmm), and Streptomyces scabies (Sc), Initial screening of antibacterial effects of eco-friendly farming material was performed using the paper disk diffusion method and co-cultivation in broth culture. Tannic acid based eco-friendly farming material showed inhibitory effect against Pcc, Rs, Aac, Xcc, Cmm, and Ss, whereas it did not show inhibition zone against Ep. However, when it tested by co-cultivation in broth culture, it showed strong inhibition effect against all pathogens that declined growth curve compared to bacterial pathogen only. Interestingly, when we observed morphological changes on those pathogens by SEM, cell morphologies of 7 pathogens were slightly changed that seem to be malfunction in their cell envelope.

  • Popillia quqdriguttata is a serious insect pest in Korean golf courses. The adult feeds on leaves of latifoliate trees and herbaceous plants while the larva feeds on roots of turfgrass. Thus, control of p. quadriguttata adults was tried with registered insecticides in golf courses in Korea. The insecticides used in the experiments were carbaryl + phosalone WP, chlorpyrifos + diflubenzuron WP, chlorpyrifos-methyl EC, deltamethrin EC, etofenprox WP, etofenprox + diazinon WP, etofenprox + tebufenozide EC, fenitrothion EC, imidacloprid SC, pyraclofos WP, and tralomethrin EC. Mortalities of P. quadriguttata were over 95% in carbaryl + phosalone WP, chlorpyrifos + diflubenzuron WP, etofenprox + diazinon WP, and fenitrothion EC at petri dish and in greenhouse. In the field test, corrected mortality of P. quadriguttata was 95.2% and 80.9% in carbaryl 40% +phosalone 20% WP and fenitrothion 50% EC, respectively. Spreading agent enhanced toxic effect of used insecticides to p. quadriguttata adults except carbaryl + phosalon 20% EC. p. quadriguttata adult was firstly observed to feed on leaves of Canna generalis at the Yongwon golf club in Jinhae, Gyeongnam and Prunus ameriaca var. ansu and p. salicina at the Anyang Honest golf club in Gunpo, Cyeonggi. Therefure, host plants off quadriguftata became 29 species of 26 genera in 19 families. Zoysia matreila at the fairway and roughs of Anyang Benest golf club was damaged by p. quadriguttata larvae in Octomber, 2002 and not recovered in April, 2003. Damaged turfgrass became yellowish and wilted and that retarded recovering in the following spring.

  • For the effective chemical control to minimize infection of storage pathogens on kiwifruit in the field, this study was conducted to screen alternative fungicides which could be substituted for the fungicides Benomyl WP and Thiophanate-methyl 제 registered for the control of postharvest fruit rats of kiwifruit in Korea. Among the 8 fungicides tested, Tebuconazole WP, Iprodione WP and Flusilazole WP showed higher inhibitory effects on themycelial growths of 3 major pathogens of postharvest fruit rots, Botryosphaeria dothidea, Diaporthe actinidiae and Botrytis cinerea on potato dextrose agar. They also showed control efficiencies as high as those of Benomyl WP and Thiophanate-methyl WP on postharvest fruit rots in the field. They might be good candidates for fungicieds for the control of postharvest fruit rots of kiwifruit.

  • Low oxygen treatment and heating treatment are used to prevent insects in the field of food science. These eco-friendly control methods can be applied to biological control technique in conservation treatment of organic cultural properties. To evaluate material stability, low-oxygen treatment and low oxygen treatment are applied to wood, pigment, paper and textile that are related to historical wooden buildings. As a result, wood moisture content declined after low oxygen treatment. But decline rate is a little, so it can be expected to turn back original state as time passes. And test result on pigment, paper, textile of chrominance and strength of test materials are stable. But after heating treatment, pigments are separated.

  • This study was conducted to reduce the using amount of chemical fungicides for the control of red-pepper powdery mildew. Effect of combined application of three microbial fungicides and six chemical fungicides for the control of red-pepper powdery mildew was examined in vitro, in pot assay and under field condition. One chemical fungicide (Azoxystrobin+Chlorothalonil) among six chemical fungicides significantly suppressed three microbial fungicides (Bacillus subtilis Y1336, Bacillus subtilis DBB1501, Bacillus subtilis QST-713) registered for the control of pepper powdery mildew in vitro. In the pot assay, two mixed application such as B. subtilis DBB1501+Trifloxystrobin, B. subtilis QST713+Trifloxystrobin among nine mixed applications of three microbial fungicides and three chemical fungicides showed the highest suppressive effect against red pepper powdery mildew. Also, suppressive effect of the mixed application of B. subtilis QST713 and Trifloxystrobin was similar to that of single application of three chemical fungicides(Myclobutanil, Trifloxystrobin, Hexaconazole). In the field test, when the microbial fungicides (B. subtilis DBB1501, B. subtilis QST713) and the chemical fungicide (Trifloxystrobin) for the control of powdery mildew of red pepper were mixed foliar sprayed four times at 7 day-intervals, the control values were in the range of 70.3% to 70.9%. On the other hand, when each of the chemical fungicide (Trifloxystrobin) was foliar sprayed four times at 7 day-intervals, the control value was 72.7%. Consequently, the mixed application of the microbial fungicides and chemical fungicides could be recommended as a one of control measures for reducing the using amount of chemical fungicides.

  • An investigation was conducted to determine the characteristics of seasonal occurrences and effective insecticides for minimizing the occurrence of Pseudaulacaspis cockerelli in sweet persimmon orchards. Most of the nymphs or female scales that mated in mid-September overwintered on twigs, matured to lay eggs in the next spring in accordance with temperature increase, and survived till mid to late May to lay all of their eggs. Males mostly died after mating by the end of September, while the males on the fallen leaves died during the hibernating period. Egg laying in P. cockerelli showed differences in accordance with the weather conditions in each year. They laid eggs from mid-April to mid- or late May, with a peak in early or mid-May. A female was estimated to lay 160 eggs; eggs hatched a week later from the peak period of egg laying. In summer, egg laying started in early or mid-July and ended in mid- or late August, with a peak in late July or early August; a female laid approximately 130 eggs in summer. The estimated egg period was 4 days. The first generation nymph that hatched from the eggs laid by the overwintered female on twigs showed 10% occurrence on twigs and 90% on leaves. The first generation nymphs on twigs mostly developed into female scales. The occurrence of the second generation nymphs reached a peak on July 27, 2009; they lived on the twigs as their overwintering site from mid- or late August. The female and male scales on leaves developed at the similar rate as the first generation nymphs up to August. The occurrence of male scales indicated that the peak occurrence of nymphs was on August 12, 2009, male scales on August 27, and adults approximately on September 14, which showed steady relationship in the sequence of development from nymphs to adult males. Among the nymphs that occurred on the leaves on August 12, 75% of them emerged into male adults, mated, and died. Buprofezine+dinotefurn (20+15) WP treatment on June 9 and 16 resulted in 90.6% control of P. cockerelli, when mortality was checked 7 weeks after treatment.
