Verbal Interaction in Paired Think-Aloud Problem Solving; Comparison of the Characteristics of Small Groups Based on Achievement (해결자·청취자 활동에서의 언어적 상호작용: 성취도에 의한 소집단별 특성 비교)

  • This study investigated the characteristics of verbal interactions of various small groups based on previous achievement in paired think-aloud problem solving. Two classes of a high school were assigned to the homogeneous and heterogeneous groups, and taught on chemistry. Students from homogeneous groups (high${\cdot}$high, mid?id) and heterogeneous groups (high${\cdot}$mid, high${\cdot}$low) were selected, and their algorithmic problem solving on chemical equation and stoichiometry were audio/video taped. In high${\cdot}$high group, solver's 'require agreement' and listener 'agree' were frequently exhibited. On the other hands, listener's 'point out' and solver's 'modify' were frequently exhibited in mid${\cdot}$mid group, which was also observed in the heterogeneous groups (high${\cdot}$mid, high${\cdot}$low). Many verbal interactions were analyzed to be in symmetrical type. In this type, 'require agreement-agree' of high${\cdot}$high group was the most frequent. 'problem solving-agree' of high${\cdot}$high group was the most frequent in the solver-dominant type, while 'point out-modify' of high${\cdot}$low group in the listener-dominant type. The verbal behaviors related to the solving stage were frequently observed, but there were few related to the reviewing stage.

The influence of temperature gradient and rotation rate on Bi4Ge3O12 crystal growth by czochralski method (쵸크랄스키법에 의한 $Bi_4Ge_3O_{12}$ 단결정 육성에서 온도구배와 회전속도가 미치는 영향)

  • In order to grow $Bi_4Ge_3O_{12}$ crystals by the Czochralski method equipped with the auto-diameter control system, we used the resistance heater of our own design. We measure the temperature gradients under-arious thermal configurations. The relation between the critical rotation rate corresponding to the flat interface and the temperature gadient was investigated, and the importance of the axial temperature gradient was pointed out. The results from this work were compared with those obtained by other authors when RF heating was used. The optimal conditions for the crystal growth were determined as follows; under $O_2$ atmosphere with the pulling rate fixed at 2 mm/hr, rotation rate changed from 30 to 23 rpm as the crystal growth proceeded, radial and axial temperature gradients were 50 and $40^{\circ}C$/cm near melts respectively, and the composition was chemically stoichiometric.

Fabrication and characterization of Mn-Si thermoelectric materials by mechanical alloying (MA법에 의한 Mn-Si계 초미세 열전재료의 제조 및 평가)

  • The semiconducting $MnSi_{1.73}$ compound has been recognized as a thermoelectric material with excellent oxidation resistance and stable characteristics at elevated temperature. In the present work, we applied mechanical alloying (MA) technique to produce $MnSi_{1.73}$ compound using a mixture of elemental manganese and silicon powders. The mechanical alloying was carried out using a Fritsch P-5 planetary mill under Ar gas atmosphere. The MA powders were characterized by the X-ray diffraction with Cu-$K{\alpha}$ radiation, thermal analysis and scanning electron microscopy. Due to the observed larger loss of Si relative to Mn during mechanical alloying of $MnSi_{1.73}$, the starting composition of a mixture Mn-Si was modified to $MnSi_{1.83}$ and then $MnSi_{1.88}$. The single $MnSi_{1.73}$ phase has been obtained by mechanical alloying of $MnSi_{1.88}$ mixture powders for 200 hours. It is also found that the grain size of $MnSi_{1.73}$ compound powders analyzed by Hall plot method is reduced to 40 nm after 200 hours of milling.

Prediction of Flame Propagation Velocity based on the Behavior of Dust Particles (분진폭발의 입자거동을 고려한 화염전파속도의 예측)

  • Based on experimental study of lycopodium dust particles' behavior, we suggest the flame propagation model through dust clouds. With dust concentration, flame velocity reaches a maximum value at $170g/m^3$ to exceed the stoichometric concentration for lycopodium-air mixture combustion and decreases slightly in the richer side of $500g/m^3$. At $47{\sim}200g/m^3$, mean velocity of particle increases in proportion to flame velocity. As the sum of burning rate and particle velocity is approximate in flame velocity, the flame propagation velocity with lycopodium dust concentration can be estimated by the calculation and it was found that behavior of particles is useful for better understanding of dust flame propagation velocity.

Hydrothermal Synthesis of Smectite from Dickite (딕카이트로부터 스멕라이트의 수열합성)

  • A hydrothermal process was used to synthesize dioctahedral smectite from dickite [$A1_2$$Si_2$$O_{5}$ $(OH)_4$], Dickite was previously activated by heating at $800^{\circ}C$ far 4 hours with $Na_2$$CO_3$. After the heat-treatment, $SiO_2$ was added for stoichiometry, The autoclaving was carried out in closed stainless steel vessel (about 1 liter) at the condition of various temperature, pressure, time etc. High quality smectite could be obtaind by heating at $290^{\circ}C$ under the pressure of 60 kgf/$\textrm{cm}^2$ for 48 hours. This experiment reveals that pH of the solution was an important factor and should be maintained at 10 to 11 for the formation of dioctahedral smectite. The synthesized smectite was identified as Na-beidellite by the treatment of ethylene glycol and Greene-Kelly test.

Deposition of AIN Thin Films by Single Ion Beam Sputtering (단일 이온빔 스퍼터링법을 이용한 AIN 박막의 증착)

  • Aluminum nitride(AIN) thin films were deposited by reactive single ion beam sputtering using N2 or NH3 as reactive gas. The structural, compositional and optical properties of AIN thin films were characterized by XRD, GAXRD, TEM, SEM, XPS UV/VIS spectrophotometer, and FT-IR. All the deposited AIN thin films were amorphous by the analysis fo XRD and GAXRD. However, TEM analysis showed that AIN nano-crystallites were uniformly distributed in the films. The presence of Al-N bonds were also confirmed by FT-IR and XPS analyses. The optical bandgap of AIN films increased up to 6.2 eV and the transmittance was a-bout 100% in visible range with approaching the stoichimetric composition. Irrespective of using N2 or NH3 as reactive gas, the deposited AIN thin films had very smooth surface morphologies. Their refractive index ranged from 1.6 to 1.7.

The Effect of Systematicity and Presentation Type of Analog on Concept Recall and Application (비유물의 체계성과 표현 방식이 개념 회상 및 응용에 미치는 효과)

  • This study investigated the effect of systematicity and presentation type of an analog upon students' concept recall and application regarding stoichiometry that included limiting reagent. Systematicity was manipulated by varing the degree of explicit causal structure, and presentation type was in either verbal format or verbal/figurative format. The four types of the analog developed were studied by randomly assigned junior high school students (N=137). Prior to the treatment, the Group Assessment of Logical Thinking was administered and its score was used as a covariate. After the treatment, a research-made conception test was administered immediately and four weeks later. The ANCOVA results indicated that systematicity had a positive effect on immediate application regardless of presentation type. In the application problem of retention test, however, systematicity had no main effect but interaction with presentation type. These suggested that the systematic analog in verbal/figurative format most positively influence concept application. Educational implications are discussed.

Growth of Synthetic Emerald Single Crystal by Flux Method (Flux법에 의한 합성 에메랄드 단결정 육성)

  • Growth of synthetic emerald [($(BeO)_3(Al_{2-x}Cr_xO_3)(SiO_2)_6$] single crystals was carried out by flux method. In this study, the starting materials were prepared by stoichiometric mixing of BeO, $Al_2O_3$ and $SiO_2$ as reaching components. The conditions for the growth of synthetic emerald single crystals are as follows : temperature range ; $1150{\sim}900^{\circ}C$, cooling rate ; 2, 4, $10^{\circ}C/hr$, flux ; $Li_2CO_3$, $V_2O_5$, dopant ; $Cr_2O_3$. The sizes of $Cr_2O_3$emerald single crystals depending on 2, 4, $10^{\circ}C/hr$ cooling rates. The obtained emerald single crystal was characterized and the following results were obtained : lattice parameter : a=0.921nm, c=0.917nm, crystal system ; hexagonal, crystal size ; max. $0.80{\times}0.95mm^2(c{\times}m)$, orientation ; (1000), $m(10{\bar{1}}0)$.

  • The Ta$_2$O$_{5}$ thin film was deposited on Si-(III) and glass substrate with the change of Ar:O$_2$ gas flow rate in the assist ion gun by the Dual ion-Beam Sputtering (DIBS). As the $O_2$ gas flow of the assist ion gun was decreased, the deposition rate of the thin films decreased. The refractive index was fixed (2.11, at 1550 nm) without regarding to $O_2$ gas flow of the range 3∼12 sccm in assist ion gun. The condition of Ar:O$_2$=3:12 was formatted stoichiometry composition of Ta$_2$O$_{5}$ and the ms roughness was small (0.183 nm).

Kinetic Analysis of Oxidative Coupling of Methane over Na+/MgO Catalyst (Na+/MgO 촉매상에서 메탄의 Oxidative Coupling 반응의 속도론적 해석)

  • The oxidative coupling of methane was studied kinetically using $Na^+(50wt%)/MgO$ catalyst at 710, 730, 750, 770 and $790^{\circ}C$ in a fixed bed flow reactor at the atmospheric pressure under differential conversion conditions. Through curve fitting, it was found that the Langmuir-Hinshelwood type mechanism was fitted to this reaction rather than Rideal-Redox type or Eley-Rideal type mechanism. Therefore, it was proposed that the $O_2{^-}$ or $O_2{^{2-}}$ species on the surface was related to the production of $CH_3{\cdot}$. The estimated activation energy of $CH_3{\cdot}$ production was about 39.3kcal/mol. Moreover, as the result of curve fitting, the stoichiometric coefficient of $O_2$ for the production of $CH_3{\cdot}$ to produce $CO_x$was approximately 1.5. Accordingly, it could be concluded that the $CH_3O_2{\cdot}*$ was prouduced through the partial oxidation of $CH_3{\cdot}$ with the surface oxygen.
