  • The effect of cultural, physical and chemical control methods on the population density of Meloidogyne arenaria second-stage juveniles (J2) and on fruit yields of oriental melon was investigated at Seongju Fruit Vegetable Experiments Station, Kyungpook province, Korea, for two years from 1999 to 2000. Crops used in a rotation prior to Oriental melon were rice, corn, sesame, and green onion. The physical methods used were either solarization, soil addition or soil drying, and a nematicide, fosthiazate of granular formula, was used as the chemical method, applying at a rate of 300g a. i./10 a. Growing rice in the rotation, solarization, and soil addition controlled the nematode disease most effectively, reducing the number of J2 by 90% and increasing fruit yields two times. However, the effects of these control methods on the J2 population were limited to the early growing season; the J2 population increased later, suggesting that additional control practices may be needed in the following season. The next effective control methods were use of corn in the rotation, the nematicide application, and soil drying. The nematicide application was effective only for the early fruit yield, but neither for the late nor for the total yields. Use of sesame or green onion in the rotation was not effective in controlling the nematode.

  • A new disease causing skin sooty dapple symptoms on fruits, leaves, and young shoot of Asian pear occurred in Korea. However, no chemical control approaches has been developed to control this disease. To investigate ecological aspects of this disease, we conducted field surveys in the high or low disease occurred orchards. The years with heavy rainfall caused severe occurrence of the skin sooty dapple disease than the years with lower rainfall during all growth stages of pear fruit. Different fruit-wrapping bags did not prevent occurrence of skin sooty dapple disease, and lesion numbers were higher in lower parts of fruit equatorial line inside of fruit-wrapping bags. There is a direct correlation between occurrence of the skin sooty dapple disease and frequency of fungicide application in the orchards. Among the tested commercial fungicides, thiophanate-methyl WP and penconazole WP completely inhibited the growth of the Cladosporium sp. in in vitro studies but little protection was observed in the field following fungicide applications. However, application of lime sulfur combined with the use of fruit-wrapping bags most effectively reduced incidence of the disease in the field. Our results suggest that skin sooty dapple disease could be a serious problem in sustainable organic pear farms and effective control methods for this disease urgently required.

  • Citrus melanose is one of important disease in citrus cultivation, reducing quality of citrus fruits and resulting in economic loss. Like other diseases in citrus, melanose was mainly protected by chemical fungicide in the field. Recently, alternative method of disease control is highly required due to the side effect of the chemicals. In this study four rhizobacterial strains TRH423-3, MRL408-3, THJ609-3, and TRH415-2 are selected by dual-culture testing its antifungal activity against Diaporthe citri causing citrus melanose. To investigate the protection efficacy of the selected rhizobacterial strains to citrus melanose, the bacteria were pre-treated on citrus leaves following inoculation with melanose pathogen. Pre-treatment with all selected rhizobacterial strains showed disease suppression in which the levels of protection rates were different by the rhizobacterial strains. Additional treatment with the rhizobacterial strains after the pathogen inoculation enhanced protection rates in all cases. The strain MRL408-3 and TRH423-3 were identified as Burkholderia gladioli, TRH415-2 as Pseudomons fluorescens and THJ609-3 as Pseudomonas pudia as a result of analyzing the internal transcript spaces of the rhizobacterial strains rDNA. The selected rhizobacterial strains may be valuable as biological control agents in the environment-friendly citrus farm in which chemical application is limited.

  • Southern root-knot nematode (SRKN, Meloidogyne incognita) is known to be responsible for annual economic losses of 38.2 million USD in cucumber cultivation in Korea. Nematicides are frequently used to manage SRKN in plastic greenhouses. A field experiment was conducted to assess the effect of a soil fumigant (dimethyl disulfide, DMDS) and a non-fumigant (fluopyram, FL) against SRKN during the winter fallow season in a greenhouse from October to December. Nematicidal efficacy was assessed at 43 days after treatment, and the root gall index was measured 4 months after transplanting cucumber seedlings. DMDS effectively reduced second-stage SRKN juvenile density with 91% control efficacy, while FL showed no control efficacy against SRKN. Root gall index values were significantly different(p=0.020) in DMDS treatment and controls at 1.0±0.00 and 4.3±0.58, respectively. This study showed that DMDS could be considered an effective nematicide for controlling SRKN in the fallow period in winter.

  • For effective control of insect pest which can outbreak in a field during crop cultivation, various control agents such as eco-friendly agricultural materials (EFAM) including microbial control agents and chemical pesticides have been applied at fields and these control agents may be treated simultaneous or sequential in the same field to suppress diverse pests and diseases. The agents may influence each other and control efficacy may also differ from interactions. Therefore we need to test compatibility of microbial control agents with other agricultural agents. In this study, we investigated influence of pre-treated EFAMs, which are registered for whitefly control in greenhouse, on germination, mycelial growth and control efficacy of Isaria javanica isolate against sweet potato whitefly. The results showed that a mixture of paraffin oil+cinnamon oil among 4 EFAMs highly reduced germination ($8.9{\pm}1.3%{\sim}24.5{\pm}0.9%$) and mycelial growth ($0.81{\pm}0.01cm{\sim}0cm$) of I. javanica. To investigate the effects of the treatment interval between EFAMs and I. javanica on sweet potato whitefly control, four different EFAMs were pre-treated 0, 1, 4, and 7 days before applying I. javanica. Pre-treatment of four EFAMs inhibited insecticidal activity of I. javanica against sweet potato whitefly. Therefore when EFAMs and a mycopesticide using I. javanica spray simultaneous or sequential, application of EFAMs need more than 7 days interval after treatment of mycopesticide at field.

  • This study was conducted out to evaluate the efficacy of insecticides, furadan (3%G), disyston(5%G), ortran (50%WP), pirimor (50%EC) and metasystox (25%EC) to the mulberry thrips(Pseudodendrothrips mori NIWA.) The comparisons between damaged by thrips and controlled leaves with the cocoon producion and the chemical contents in leaves were carried. The results were as follows; 1. Ortran, furadan and matasystox showed the good efficacy to control the thrips, especially the period of efficacy was the longest in ortran and furadan. 2. The cocoon yield increased in the controlled plot by 3.68kg/box and 5.15kg/10a more than in the damaged plot in autumn rearing season. 3. The content of total carbohydrate and water in mulberry leaves was clearly higher in the controlled plot than in the damaged plot. This may cause the earlier leave harding by damage in autumn.

  • Korean ginseng (Panax ginseng) possesses various biological and pharmacological properties. Damping-off is a critical disease on ginseng seedlings, which is caused by the fungal pathogens Rhizoctonia solani and Pythium sp.. This disease is generally controlled by the application of fungicides, but also biological control is an efficient and environmentally friendly way to prevent ginseng damping-off. In a previous study, we screened soil-borne bacteria with potential applications as biological control agents for ginseng damping-off and selected the bacterial strain Streptomyces sp. A3265, producing antifungal substances guanidylfungin and methylguanidylfungin. In this study, we investigated control efficacy of Streptomyces sp. A3265 against ginseng damping-off in the field. As a result, the incidence of damping-off was significantly reduced when soaking ginseng seeds in the culture broth of Streptomyces sp. A3265.

  • We experimented with the effect of oleic acid and its appropriate concentration to prevent powdery mildew eco-friendly in a cucumber greenhouse cultivation. 'Baekbongdadaki' (Nongwoo Bio. co. Korea) was treated in the plastic greenhouse at Sangmyung University. We treated four levels of concentration of oleic acid, which were 0, 2000, 4000, 6000, and 8000 ppm. There were investigated diseased severity, diseased leaf area, control value, and pesticide injury. The degree of control values by oleic acid treatments was investigated at 3 days after treatment. The recurrence of powdery mildew was checked for 55 days. The day and night temperature in the greenhouse were controlled to 23 and $15^{\circ}C$ respectively. The humidity inside the greenhouse was not controlled to prevent outbreak of the disease. From the experimental results, oleic acid was very efficient to control powdery mildew. 2000 ppm of oleic acid was shown to be the most control efficiency without any pesticide injury. The recommended method to treat it was to spray three times every 3 weeks.

  • Since fire blight disease on apple and pear was produced in Korea in 2015, there were no registered chemicals to control against this disease. Instead, several antibacterial chemicals that were registered for other bacterial diseases such as soft rot and bacterial spot have been authorized by Rural Development Administration (RDA). However, these chemicals are not tested efficacy for fire blight disease except damage by those treatments on apple and pear in Korea. Thus, we evaluated efficiency using in vitro and in planta assays of antibacterial chemicals such as antibiotics and copper compounds including kasugamycin, oxytetracycline, oxolinic acid and streptomycin, and copper hydroxide, copper sulfate, oxine copper and tribasic copper sulfate, respectively. We also tested two kinds of biological agents. As expected, significant antibacterial effect was observed in vitro test of both antibiotics and copper-based chemicals. In planta test based on disease severity including ooze and water-soaked formation on immature pears, bacterial populations on blooms, and blight lesion formation in artificially inoculated shoots, kasugamycin, oxytetracycline and streptomycin have been shown the most efficiency among tested antibiotics. Four copper-based chemicals tested in this study, control effects are little bit lower than agricultural antibiotics but they seem to be available to use in terms of winter season. Biocontrol agents were also shown possibility to treat in eco-friendly farms. In addition, there are no antibiotic resistance genes in Korean isolates against antibiotics, which were selected for suppression of fire blight in this study.
