  • Kinetic studies on the reaction of isoquinoline with para-substituted benzylbromides were conducted under various pressures (1 ~1000 bar) in acetonitrile. From the rate constants obtained, the activation parameters such as$\DeltaV^{\neq}, \Delta\beta^{\neq}, \DeltaH^{\neq}, \DeltaS^{\neq}, \DeltaG^{\neq}$ and Ea were evaluated. Reaction rate increasing the pressure and temperature. The activation compressibility coefficient and the activation entropy showed negative values. From the substituent effect and the results, it was found that the reaction proceeds through $S_N2$ mechanism, but the structure of transition state was slightly changed with substituents and pressure.

  • The reaction rates of para-substituted benzoyl chlorides ($p-CH_3$, p-H, $p-NO_2$) with pyridine have been measured employing the conductometry method in acetonitrile. The pseudo first-order and second-order rate constants were determined at various pressures and temperatures. The activation parameters (${\Delta}V{\ddagger},\;{\Delta}{\beta}{\ddagger},\;{\Delta}H{\ddagger},\;{\Delta}S{\ddagger},\;{\Delta}G{\ddagger}$) and the Hammett ${\rho}$-values are determined from the values of rate constant. The values of ${\Delta}V{\ddagger},\;{\Delta}{\beta}{\ddagger}\;and\;{\Delta}S{\ddagger}$ are all negative. The Hammett ${\rho}$-values are positive for the substrate (${\rho}_Y$) over the given pressure range. The results of kinetic studies, for the pressure and substituent changes, show that these reactions are proceeded by a typical $SN_2$reaction mechanism and its bond formation is favored with elevating pressure.

  • Isopropyl mercaptan is an important pharmaceutical intermediate and chemical material. And thiourea and triglycol are the main materials for the synthesis of isopropyl mercaptan. Therefore the dissolution of thiourea in triglycol solution is very important for the production of isopropyl mercaptan. The aims of this study are to examine the dissolution kinetics of thiourea in triglycol solution, and to present an alternative process for producing isopropyl mercaptan. In order to investigate the dissolution kinetics of thiourea in triglycol solution, the concentrations of solution and reaction temperature were selected as experimental parameters. It was determined that the dissolution rate of thiourea increased with the increase in solution concentration and temperature. An empirical equation was used in fitting the data. Statistical analysis indicated small errors and the results should be reliable.

  • A kinetics study on the dissolution reaction of zinc-ferrite has been made with aqueous sulfuric acid in various temperature and concentration. Fraction reacted(R) and apparent rate constant(K) increased with increasing temperature and concentration of sulfuric acid solution. The rate of dissolution is shown by $1-(1-K)^{1/3}=Kt$ for the initial stage of the reaction in aqueous sulfuric acid, where K is apparent rate constant, R is fraction reacted and t is reaction time, respectively. Activation energy associated with reaction was determined to be 16.3 kcal/mole. The dissolution of zinc-ferrite in sulfuric acid solution is dissolved by sto-ichiometric composition, but Fe and Zn did not dissolved, respectively.

  • The rate constants($k_{OH}$) for the alkaline hydrolysis of the 4-substituted phenyl ethyl benzylphosphonates were determined in various buffer solutions by UV(Vis spectrophotometer. The activation entropies of the title reactions show negative values and this result is not consistent with a dissociative mechanism (EA) for which a positive or slightly negative value of the entropy of activation should be expected. An associative mechanism(AE) is favorable because the negligible negative charge is generated on the leaving group in the rate determining step from a good Hammett relationship(ρ=1.89). By the results of a kinetic study, we conclude that a dissociative mechanism is not proceeded in the title reactions.

  • Kinetic study of halogen exchange for N,N-dimethylcarbamoyl chloride and N,N-diethylcarbamoyl chloride in acetone by using radioisotopic halide ions has been carried out at two temperatures as a part of studying the reactivity of carbonyl carbon atom. The order of nucleophilicity showed a similar tendency as that for alkyl chloroformate, but reaction rate is much slower than that for solvolysis and alkyl chloroformate. The activation parameters,${\Delta}H^*$and${\Delta}S^*$ were found to decrease in sequence $Cl^{\rightarrow}Br^{\rightarrow}I^-$ for N,N-dialkylcarbamoyl chlorides. The results are interpreted in terms of solvation effect, degree of bond-breaking and bond-formation and electronic requirements.

  • Rate constants of solvolysis of 2-thiophenesulfonyl chloride were determined in aqueous binary mixtures with methanol, ethanol, acetone in water and in methanol. These data are interpreted using the equation of Grunwald-Winstein and Kivinen relationship. Also, kinetic solvent isotope effects in water and in methanol and product selectivities in alcohol-water mixtures were determined. Kinetic solvent isotope effect for hydrolysis of 2-thiopenesulfonyl chloride was 2.24 and 1.47 for methanol and water, respectively. Selectivity values for formation of ester relative to acid in ethanol-water mixtures show maximum S value. From kinetic solvent isotope effect in methanol and water, selectivity data in aqueous alcoholic solvents and solvent effects, it is proposed that the reaction channel favoured in low polarity solvents is general-base catalysis and/or is possibly addition elimination (S$_A$N) reaction pathway and in high polarity solvents iS S$_N$2 reaction mechanism.

  • Rates of reactions of nine m-or p-substituted phenacyl bromides with quinoline in methanol were measured by an electric conductivity method. These reactions were found to proceed through an $S_N2$ path and were accelerated by both electron-donating and electron-withdrawing substituents. A plausible reaction mechanism for this observation was proposed. Some activation parameters for these reactions were also calculated.

  • Ab initio calculations with STO-3G method were carried out on isomers of isobutylene dianion and dilithioisobutylene, and geometry, energy and Mulliken population were discussed. Energy of reaction, ${\Delta}$E, for isodesmic processes involving these species and relative heats of formation, ${\Delta}H_f$, estimated with ${\Delta}$E have shown that the contribution of "Y-aromaticity" to the structural stabilization of Y-type dianion is a tenuous one but the alkylation appears to proceed via the Y-type dilithio compound.

  • Acyl transfer reactions of 2,4-dinitrophenyl-5-substituted-2-furoates (1a-d) promoted by R2NH/R2NH2+ in 20mol% DMSO(aq) have been studied kinetically. The reactions are second-order and exhibit downward curves of the Brönsted plots with pKa0 = 9.5, β1 = 0.23-0.35 and β2 = 0.88-0.99. The k1 values increased with a stronger nucleophile and as the electron-withdrawing ability of the 5-furyl substituent increases. In contrast, the k2/k-1 values were nearly idential regardless of the 5-furyl substituents. From these results, a stepwise mechanism with a change in the rate-determining step(RDS) is proposed.
