  • Recently, the development of machine learning technology has led to the application of deep learning technology to existing image based application systems. In this context, some researches have been made to apply CNN (Convolutional Neural Network) to the field of fire detection. To verify the effects of existing preprocessing and feature extraction methods on fire detection when combined with CNN, in this paper, the recognition performance and learning time are evaluated by changing the VGG19 CNN structure while gradually increasing the convolution layer. In general, the accuracy is better when the image is not preprocessed. Also it's shown that the preprocessing method and the feature extraction method have many benefits in terms of learning speed.

  • This paper proposes an effective fire detection approach that includes the following multiple heterogeneous algorithms: moving region detection using grey level histograms, color segmentation using fuzzy c-means clustering (FCM), feature extraction using a grey level co-occurrence matrix (GLCM), and fire classification using support vector machine (SVM). The proposed approach determines the optimal threshold values based on grey level histograms in order to detect moving regions, and then performs color segmentation in the CIE LAB color space by applying the FCM. These steps help to specify candidate regions of fire. We then extract features of fire using the GLCM and these features are used as inputs of SVM to classify fire or non-fire. We evaluate the proposed approach by comparing it with two state-of-the-art fire detection algorithms in terms of the fire detection rate (or percentages of true positive, PTP) and the false fire detection rate (or percentages of true negative, PTN). Experimental results indicated that the proposed approach outperformed conventional fire detection algorithms by yielding 97.94% for PTP and 4.63% for PTN, respectively.

  • This paper explores design space of many-core processors for a fire feature extraction algorithm. This paper evaluates the impact of varying the number of cores and memory sizes for the many-core processor and identifies an optimal many-core processor in terms of performance, energy efficiency, and area efficiency. In this study, we utilized 90 samples with dimensions of $256{\times}256$ (60 samples containing fire and 30 samples containing non-fire) for experiments. Experimental results using six different many-core architectures (PEs=16, 64, 256, 1,024, 4,096, and 16,384) and the feature extraction algorithm of fire indicate that the highest area efficiency and energy efficiency are achieved at PEs=1,024 and 4,096, respectively, for all fire/non-fire containing movies. In addition, all the six many-core processors satisfy the real-time requirement of 30 frames-per-second (30 fps) for the algorithm.

  • This paper proposes an effective, four-stage smoke detection method based on video that provides emergency response in the event of unexpected hazards in early fire-alarming systems. In the first phase, an approximate median method is used to segment moving regions in the present frame of video. In the second phase, a color segmentation of smoke is performed to select candidate smoke regions from these moving regions. In the third phase, a feature extraction algorithm is used to extract five feature parameters of smoke by analyzing characteristics of the candidate smoke regions such as area randomness and motion of smoke. In the fourth phase, extracted five parameters of smoke are used as an input for a K-nearest neighbor (KNN) algorithm to identify whether the candidate smoke regions are smoke or non-smoke. Experimental results indicate that the proposed four-stage smoke detection method outperforms other algorithms in terms of smoke detection, providing a low false alarm rate and high reliability in open and large spaces.

  • Early detection of fire is an important measure for minimizing the loss of life and property damage. However, fire and smoke need to be simultaneously detected. In this context, numerous studies have been conducted on image-based fire detection. Conventional fire detection methods are compute-intensive and comprise several algorithms for extracting the flame and smoke characteristics. Hence, deep learning algorithms and convolution neural networks can be alternatively employed for fire detection. In this study, recorded image data of fire in a ship engine room were analyzed. The flame and smoke characteristics were extracted from the outer box, and the YOLO (You Only Look Once) convolutional neural network algorithm was subsequently employed for learning and testing. Experimental results were evaluated with respect to three attributes, namely detection rate, error rate, and accuracy. The respective values of detection rate, error rate, and accuracy are found to be 0.994, 0.011, and 0.998 for the flame, 0.978, 0.021, and 0.978 for the smoke, and the calculation time is found to be 0.009 s.

  • This paper proposes a new fire-smoke detection method by using extracted features from camera images and pattern recognition technique. First, moving regions are detected by analyzing the frame difference between two consecutive images and generate candidate smoke regions by applying smoke color model. A smoke region generally has a few characteristics such as similar color, simple texture and upward motion. From these characteristics, we extract brightness, wavelet high frequency and motion vector as features. Also probability density functions of three features are generated using training data. Probabilistic models of smoke region are then applied to observation nodes of our proposed Dynamic Bayesian Networks (DBN) for considering time continuity. The proposed algorithm was successfully applied to various fire-smoke tasks not only forest smokes but also real-world smokes and showed better detection performance than previous method.

  • This paper proposes a fire detection algorithm using low-cost camera to detect visual features of fire. In the previous work sensor cameras were used, but here we use very simple cameras. This method uses YCbCr and YIQ color model to detect candidate regions of fire. The candidate areas are extracted from the boundaries of the fire. noise removal elimination is performed. Regardless of environmental changes around the fire area, the results of the proposed algorithm are very satisfactory.

  • The need for early fire detection technology is increasing in order to prevent fire disasters. Sensor device detection for heat, smoke and fire is widely used to detect flame and smoke, but this system is limited by the factors of the sensor environment. To solve these problems, many image-based fire detection systems are being developed. In this paper, we implemented a system to detect fire and smoke from camera input images using a convolution neural network. Through the implemented system using the convolution neural network, a feature map is generated for the smoke image and the fire image, and learning for classifying the smoke and fire is performed on the generated feature map. Experimental results on various images show excellent effects for classifying smoke and fire.

  • Purpose: We would like to confirm that the false positive rate of flames/smoke is high when detecting fires. Propose a method and dataset to recognize and classify fire situations to reduce the false detection rate. Method: Using the video as learning data, the characteristics of the fire situation were extracted and applied to the classification model. For evaluation, the model performance of Yolov8 and Slowfast were compared and analyzed using the fire dataset conducted by the National Information Society Agency (NIA). Result: YOLO's detection performance varies sensitively depending on the influence of the background, and it was unable to properly detect fires even when the fire scale was too large or too small. Since SlowFast learns the time axis of the video, we confirmed that detects fire excellently even in situations where the shape of an atypical object cannot be clearly inferred because the surrounding area is blurry or bright. Conclusion: It was confirmed that the fire detection rate was more appropriate when using a video-based artificial intelligence detection model rather than using image data.
