The fire risk and fire safety of four types of wood were comprehensively evaluated according to Chung's equation-XII. White ash, willow, fraxinus mandshurica, and sagent cherry trees were selected as test specimens. A cone calorimetery (ISO 5660-1) was used to examine the combustion characteristics of the test piece, and finally, the fire risk rating (FRR) was predicted using the fire risk index-XII (FRI-XII). The predicted fire performance index-X (FPI-X) and fire growth index-X (FGI-X) ranged from 469.03 to 1109.73 s2/kW and 0.0009 to 0.0280 kW/s2, respectively. Additionally, the fire performance index-XI (FPI-XI) and fire growth index-XI (FGI-XI) ranged from 0.41 to 0.97 and 1.11 to 3.11, respectively. The fire risk index-XII (FRI-XII), representing a fire risk rating, showed that the fire risk of frasxinus mandsurica tree (FM) was very high at 7.60 (fire risk rating: D). And it was compared with Chung's equation-IX, fire risk index-IX (FRI-IX). The fire risk ratings according to FRI-IX and FRI-XII were generally high for willow and frasxinus mandsurica trees. Additionally, the results of FRI-XII and FRI-IX had a similar relationship, and the size of each fire safety rating closely matched each other.
With the increase in construction of long railway tunnel, social interest in the railway tunnel fire risk has also increased. However, quantitative fire risk research on this topic is still lacking, especially in terms of consideration of uncertainty of each variables used in risk analysis. Hence, in this study, to improve the overall performance of fire risk analysis technique for railway tunnel, Monte-Carlo simulation method is added to the traditional probabilistic risk analysis based on event tree approach and its validity is investigated by applying it to the real railway tunnel project.
The fire protection regulation for the nuclear power plants is based on the qualitative fire hazard assessment and the quantitative fire risk analysis, and the fire risk is managed by the fire protection plan with the appropriate balance among the fire prevention, fire suppression and the minimization of the fire effect. In these days, the zone model or the field model is generally used for the detail evaluation for the fire risk. At this paper, with consideration of the present trend, we evaluate whether the quantitative fire risk analysis and the assessment of fire result for fire areas at nuclear power plants can be possible by use of Fire Dynamics Simulator (FDS) that is the state-of-the-art fire modeling tool. Consequently, it is expected that the quantitative fire risk evaluation propelled by the fire modeling can be available as an applicable tool to improve the core damage frequency as well as the quantitative fire risk analysis.

As we learned in Daegu subway fire accident, fire in the railway tunnel is prone to develop to large disaster due to the limitation of smoke control and smoke exhaust. In railway tunnel, in order to ensure fire safety, fire prevention and fighting systems are installed by quantitative risk assessment results. Therefore, in this research, developed the program to establish quantitative risk assessment and suggested quantitative safety assessment method including fire scenarios in railway tunnel, fire and evacuation analysis model, fatality estimate model and societal risk criteria. Moreover, this method applys to plan preventing disaster for Honam high speed railway tunnel. As results, we presented the proper distance of escape route and societal risk criteria.
As population grows and urban facilities are concentrated in specific areas due to recent urbanization and industrialization, cities have structures vulnerable to both natural and man-made disasters. Most of these structures, whether buildings or residential houses, are left in a defenseless state if not given the appropriate check-up before they are built. The process of rapid urbanization without establishing the proper urban fire risk assessment will surely lead to disasters. This phenomenon occurred during the process of rapid urbanization and maybe said the result of chaotic urban expansion where modern urban infrastructure is not yet equipped in the city. Under the said circumstances, propagation processes of Korean urban fire cases were investigated to establish fire risk assessment system. Moreover, this paper explains the experiment performed for establishing urban risk assessment model. The said experiment was conducted using the new urban fire risk assessment model.
We propose a weather-related service for fire risk assessment in order to increase fire safety awareness in everyday life. The proposed service offers a fire risk assessment level according to weather forecasts and a degree of fire risk according to fire factors under certain weather conditions. In order to estimate the fire risk, we produced a risk matrix through data mining with a decision tree using investigation data and weather data. Through the proposed service, residents can calculate the degree of fire risk under certain weather conditions using the fire factors around them. In addition, they can choose from various solutions to reduce fire risk. In order to demonstrate the feasibility of the proposed services, we developed a system that offers the services. Whenever weather forecasting is carried out by the Korea Meteorological Administration, the system produces the fire risk assessment levels for seven major cities and nine provinces of South Korea in an online process, as well as the fire risk according to fire factors for the weather conditions in each region.

Major petrochemical companies in the USA and the EU map out the strategies step-by-step hazard evaluation for the efficient risk management. They adopted the risk screening methods, such as Dow fire & explosion index, as a preliminary phase to execute detailed evaluation such as QRA (Quantitative Risk Assessment). In this study, The FEDI (Fire & Explosion Damage Index), which a kind of risk screening method proposed by Khan and Abbasi, was applied to the BTX plant in Korea. We showed that the FEDI can be effectively used to classify the hazard potential by comparison of the result from the FEDI and the result from QRA. And we showed that the characteristics and the quantities of chemical are the factors which have a largest effect on fire and explosion by executing relative sensitivity analysis of the FEDI. In conclusion, if the FEDI was applied as a preliminary phase of HAZOP, more efficient hazard evaluation can be possible.
A university needs to analyze and improve its curricula with the perspective of the consumer to develop a syllabus for the training of industry-demand customized human resources. Accordingly, this paper surveyed the demand of fire-related industry workers to evaluate the major fitness of the curriculum of fire risk prediction and assessment and carried out descriptive statistical analysis, factor analysis, cluster analysis, and one-way ANOVA based on the results. According to the analysis, fire-related industry workers reported that the curriculum of fire risk prediction and assessment is suitable for majors. In addition, they were greatly aware of the necessity of basic major and common major subjects among subjects of fire risk prediction and assessment. The results of this analysis will provide the basic data to improve the curriculum continuously in the future.
In this study, it was evaluated the fire risk of an electric heater as representative seasonal appliances. Two type of electric heaters were used in experiments. When electric heaters were operated, temperature variation was measured around the heater. Internal structure was understood by Nondestructive inspection. It was evaluated the tire risk of electric heaters, when flammable materials were positioned ear a heater. It was also estimated the probability of a tire in case of malfunction of a safety tip-over witch. When a heater was operated in a normal condition, temperature was maintained under $80^{\circ}C$ around the heater. The possibility of a fire is very high, when a heater is covered with flammable materials or malfunction of safety parts (safety tip-over switch, anti-overheating devices).
