  • The high predictive performance of fire detector models is essentially needed to assure the reliability of fire and evacuation modeling in the process of Performance-Based fire safety Design (PBD). The main objective of the present study is to measure input information in order to predictive the accurate activation time of fixed temperature heat detectors adopted in Fire Dynamics Simulator (FDS) as a representative fire model. To end this, Fire Detector Evaluator (FDE) which could be measured the device properties of detector was used, and the spot-type fixed temperature heat detectors of two thermistor types and one bimetal type were considered as research objectors. Activation temperature and Response Time Index (RTI) of detectors required for the fire modeling were measured, and then the RTI was measured for ceiling jet flow and vertical jet flow in consideration of the install location of detectors. The results of fire modeling using measured device properties were compared and validated with the experimental results of full-scale compartment fires. It was confirmed that, in result, the numerically predicted activation time of detector showed reasonable agreement with the measured activation time.

  • The deterministic modeling techniques like Zone model and Field model are mainly used for thermal distribution and smoke flow at fire case in multi use facilities. While Zone model analyse fire simulation by dividing spaces by 2 section, the Field model dividing many cells. However, the difficultly follows to prove efficiency between the two models when it applys. Therefore new modeling development is required which in closes to real situation by verify number algorithm and related data for fire modeling. The paper analyses the efficiency of two different fire modeling at interior spaces of multiplex cinema theater. It is found that the zone model for average distribution and the field model for detail space phenomenon are relevant to apply. Also, Filed model is useful to the result that fire analysis and position of detector and review for smoke control system.

  • The fire protection regulation for the nuclear power plants is based on the qualitative fire hazard assessment and the quantitative fire risk analysis, and the fire risk is managed by the fire protection plan with the appropriate balance among the fire prevention, fire suppression and the minimization of the fire effect. In these days, the zone model or the field model is generally used for the detail evaluation for the fire risk. At this paper, with consideration of the present trend, we evaluate whether the quantitative fire risk analysis and the assessment of fire result for fire areas at nuclear power plants can be possible by use of Fire Dynamics Simulator (FDS) that is the state-of-the-art fire modeling tool. Consequently, it is expected that the quantitative fire risk evaluation propelled by the fire modeling can be available as an applicable tool to improve the core damage frequency as well as the quantitative fire risk analysis.

  • Purpose: The number of Cold Storages at home and abroad is on the rise, fires in large Cold Storages have recently occurred. As fires continue to occur and property damage is on the rise every year, the importance of preventing fires in large Cold Storage is growing. Method: Real Cold Storages were investigated on-site and fire cases were analyzed to derive and analyze fire risk, and the ORS, which is emerging as an adaptive fire prevention technology of Cold Storage, was investigated through FDS. Result: oxygen concentration 21, 15.7% and 17.7, 16.7% were analyzed through FDS, and flashover was reached within 3~4 minutes from 21, 17.7, 16.7%, but if oxygen concentration was lowered to 15.7%, it didn't ignite for 13 minutes. Conclusion: This study understood the concept and general part of the ORS, modeled the freezer through FDS, and analyzed the oxygen concentration to analyze the fire protection adaptability of the ORS. In the future, it is expected that large-scale empirical experiments and related regulations will be prepared to provide solutions for fire prevention in Cold Storages in blind spots of fire.
