  • The limiting equivalent ionic conductances of Li$^+$, Na$^+$, K$^+$, Cl$^-$, and Br$^-$ ions were obtained with TATB[Tetraphenyl Arsonium Tetraphenyl Borate] method from limiting equivalent conductances of LiCl, NaCl, KCl and KBr measured in water-methanol systems by conductometric method. With those values and viscosity of water-methanol systems, the Stokes radii of corresponding ions have been extracted. The latter values corrected by calibration method of Nightingale and supplemented by the crystallographic radii were utilized to calculate the volume of solvation-shell that surrounds ions. The reasonable solvation numbers (h$_{H_2O}$ + h$_0$) were estimated by comparing the values obtained by the various suggested methods. The selective properties of ion solvation were also discussed.

  • This experiment was performed to investigate the flowering habit of sesame (Sesamum indicum L.). Sesame varieties tested could be classified into 8 different plant types by their morphological traits such as capsule shape, capsule setting habit and branching types among sesame gene pool of Crop Experiment Station, ORD. The first flower was appeared at the lowest node on main stem. Flowers were appeared progressively toward the tip of the main stem and also toward the tips of branches. The interval of flowering for a node was about one day, but 3 to 8 days for the flowers on the tips. Side flowers started at 4 to 5 nodes lower than those of center flower at the same day. Flowers were beared 2 by 1 node on the middle part of flower setting node (7-9) in mono capsule setting habit in spite of its normal is 1 by 1 node on the other nodes. Flowers were beared opposite direction on each node of stem and flowering toward the tip of main stem composed of cross shape between nodes and spiral, reverse of clockwise direction. We called this habit as cross spiral flowering order and cross spiral phyllotaxis. The first flower on branches was appeared when center flower on the 5th node of main stem began to flower. The branches produced at higher nodes on main stem showed larger flowering periods and more number of flowers than that at lower parts. BTB (Branch, Tricapsule, Bicarpels, 4 Loculi) type showed three capsule setting habits and same flowering period both on main stem and branches while BTQ (Branch, Tricapsule, Quadricarpels, 8 Loculi) type showed three capsule setting habit on main stem and mono-capsule setting habit on branches. In BTQ type, the period of flowering was much shorter on branches than on main stem. Branching type was considered more promising than non branching type for the breeding of early maturing high yielding variety because branching type has the advantage of bearing a lot of flowers in comparatively short flowering period.

  • This study has been conducted to investigate the treatment time and concentration of GA3 solution dipping for labor saving in 'Campbell Early' grapevine. The rachis growth at harvest was reduced by GA3 solution dipping before 5 days flowering, and increased significantly by GA3 solution dipping treatment at full bloom and after 5 days full bloom. GA3 5, 10, 20 mg·L-1 dipping treatment before 5 days flowering and GA3 20 mg·L-1 treatment of full bloom and after 5 days full bloom showed a rachis twist phytotoxicity symptom. The optimum GA3 concentrations for rachis growth promotion without phytotoxicity were 5 mg·L-1 and 10 mg·L-1. The degree of compact berry, bloom, skin color, SSC and acidity at harvest by GA3 solution dipping treatment time between concentration were not different from those of control. But the fruit berry weight was decreased by before 5 days flowering treatment when compared with control. There were no differences in full bloom and after 5 days full bloom treatment. The occurrence percent of berry cracking at before 5 days flowering and after 5 days full bloom treatment were significantly increased by GA3 treatment. The bitter rot occurrence of berry at harvest was not affected by GA3 treatment. Total rachis length of fruit cluster was increased by full bloom and 5 days after full bloom treatment. The length of rachis increased without reference to them position at full bloom and 5 days after bloom treatment. Accordingly, GA3 5 mg·L-1 solution dipping treatment at full bloom and 5 days after full bloom were can be effectively for rachis growth promotion.

  • Experiments on rice concerning it s varieties, fertilization, seedling dates and herbicides have been conducted to determine the most desirable method of direct sowing cultivation on dry paddy field land in the middle part of Korea. The results obtained at the Office of Rural Development of Choongnam Province are as follows:. 1. Sixteen different derivatives from the main varieties of low land rice were cultivated on a dry paddy field by the direct sowing method; at the same time, a few varieties were tried adopting the common transplanting cultivation method. The yield and yield factors from these two groups were examined to give the following results: a) Compared to the common transplanting cultivation, the direct sowing method showed remarkably increased number of panicles while the number of flowers per panicle was shown to be significantly decreased. The maturing ratio was detected to be lowered. The yield horn them differed according to the different varieties : good yield was obtained from Hokwang while Norin #25 proved poor when compared with the common transplanting cultivation method. b) Among sixteen varieties tested, Sunsou, Norin #25, Jaigou, Hokwang, Palkueng and Gosi showed comparatively high yields, their yield being more than 325 kilograms per 10 Are, but Nampoong, Paldal, Nongkwang, Norin #29, Eunbangju #101 and Shiro gane showed less yield, their yield being less than 271 kilograms per 10 Are, the relations between the yield and the yield factors can be summarized as follows; Number of varieties and their rice yield. 1) The varieties which were great in the, number of panicles and high in yield=Jaigoun, Hokwang Palkueng and Gosi. 2) The varieties which were low in the number of panicles and high in yield=Sounsou and Norin #25. 3) The varieties which were great in the number of panicles and poor in yield=Eunbangju #101 and Sirogane. 4) The varieties which were poor in the number of panicles and poor in yield: Nampung, Paldal and Norin #29. Number of flowers per panicle and yield. 1) The varieties which were great in the number of flowers per panicle and high in yield: Sounsou, Norin #25 and Gosi. 2) The varieties which were poor in the number of flowers per panicle and high in yield ; Jaigoun, Hokwang and Palkueng. 3) The varieties which were great in the number of flowers per panicle and poor in yield: Paldal and Nampung. 4) The varieties which were poor in the number of flowers per panicle and poor in yield: Norin #29. Eunbangju #101 and Sirogane. Maturing ratio and yield. 1) The varieties which were high in the maturing ratio and high in yield: Jaigoun, Sounsou, Norin #25 and Palkueng. 2) The varieties which were low in the maturing ratio and high in yield: Hokwang and Gosi. 3) The varieties which were early maturing rat io and low in yield: Hokwang and Gosi. 4) The varieties which were late maturing ratio and poor in yield: Eunbangju #101, Nampungand Sirogane 1, 000 grain weight and yield. 1) The varieties which were heavy in 1, 000 grains weight and high in yield=Norin #25 and Hokwang. 2) The varieties which were light in 1, 000 grains weight and high in yield=Sounsou and Jaigoun. 3) The varieties which were heavy in 1, 000 grains weight and poor in yield=Nongkwang and Eunbanju. 4) The varieties which were light in 1, 000 grains weight and poor in yield=Norin #29 and Sirogane. 2. The experiment on fertilization showed that the most desirable amount to be given per 10 Are was 10 kilograms of Nitrogen, 5 kilograms of phosphate and 6 kilograms of potassium; and when the Nitrogen given exceeded 8 kilograms, its effect was better when given in amsll consecutive (split) amounts, while the maturing ratio and the number of the flowers per panicle increased when Nitrogen was given in large amount during the later stage of growth of rice. 3. The experiment on the date and amount of seedling showed that the tested variety, Sunsou gave the best results when planted on the days between 25 April and 10 May. Eight liters per 10 Are were preferable if planted early and 12 liters per 10 Are if planted late. The reason why the later planting gave a lower yield was that the number of flowers per panicle was fewer. 4. The experiment on the irrigation for rice with direct sowing cultivation immersed in water showed that it was the most satisfactory when irrigated on 25th June, 55 days after its seedling, its plot giving the best yield. The plots 10th June and 15th July showed just as good results. However, irrigated later, than 15th July it showed lower yields. 5. Compared to the yield of the plot controlled by the common method, the yield from the plots treated with chemical herbicide such as LOROX, TOK, PCP, SWEP, Mo-338 on dry condition soil seemed poorer, but significant difference was not found statistically. On the other hand in the case where chemical herbicides such as TOK, Mo-338, Stam F-34 or ORDRAM were used after irrigation, the yield from the ORDRAM and TOK treated plots did not show significant differences compared to the common hand weed controling method, but those treated with chemicals other than the above showed a lower yield.

  • This study was conducted to improve commercial quality of a cut spray chrysanthemum 'Gama' bred in Korea by foliar application of daminozide (DMZ), suppressing excessive elongation of peduncle caused by high temperature in summer season production. Applications were made at three floral bud developmental stages (I, II, and III), and concentrations used were 0, 500, 1000, and $2000mg{\cdot}L^{-1}$. Both cut flower length and peduncle length showed the greatest suppression of elongation by DMZ treatments at stage II. DMZ also gradually reduced values of those in a concentration-dependant manner. Stem thickness and flower diameter reduced compared to control as DMZ was sprayed at later stage and those two characteristics decreased in a concentration-dependant manner. The number of paralleled flowers neighboring apical part of whole plant showed the best results at stage I and II. As for DMZ concentration, those increased effectively at $500-1,000mg{\cdot}L^{-1}$. Among all combinations, $1,000mg{\cdot}L^{-1}$ DMZ at stage II recorded the most paralleled flowers and showed 24.2% increment as compared to control. The number of fully expanded flowers and total floral buds also showed the highest values using $1,000mg{\cdot}L^{-1}$ DMZ at stage II than the other treatments. In cut spray chrysanthemum cultivar 'Gama' bred in Korea, foliar-spraying with $1,000mg{\cdot}L^{-1}$ DMZ at stage II most effectively suppressed excessive peduncle elongation, parallelled flower cluster arrangement, and increased the number of flowers in summer. However, this combination affected negatively the other commercial qualities, reducing cut flower length, stem thickness, and flower diameter. Therefore, we recommended that foliar-spraying stage and DMZ concentration was stage I and $1,000mg{\cdot}L^{-1}$, respectively, in a practical culture for 'Gama'.

  • This study was carried out to investigate the effects of planting density, time and frequency of pinching on growth and yield of Lycium chinese Miller cultivated in vinyl house. This experiment was conducted at the experimental field of Cheong-yang Agriculture High School, Cheong-yang, Chung-nam province, in 1997 to 1998. The number of flowers, fruit setting number and dry weight of fruits per branch were increased as the spacings were wider, but the fruit yield per unit area was decreased up to the narrowest spacing plot of $60\;{\times}\;20cm$. The good results of growth status and fruit yield was obtained at the early pinching in May 5. As the more frequent pinching were treated, the more number of flowers and fruits per branch were produced, showing increase of fresh and dry yield, because of much more branches per plot.

  • To investigate the effects of foliage clipping time, degree, and nitrogen top-dressing after clipping on the growth and the agronomic characteristics, rice plants grown under ordinary cultural practices were clipped at the maximum tiller stage, 10 days prior to, and after that stage, respectively, with varying clipping, height, as 0, 1/3, 1/2, and 2/3 of plant height. And nitrogen was top-dressed at the rate of 0, 2, 4, 6 kg per 10 are immediately after clipping. The variety used was "Jinheung". The results obtained are outlined as follows: 1. Effect of clipping on the growth of rice plant: The subsequent growth was quite rapid during 10 days after clipping, and resulted, on the whole, in nearly complete recovery of defoliation by 20 days after clipping. a) Generally, the later the clipping time, the more growth accelerated. Rice plants clipped before the differentiation of ear primordia nearly recovered the damage, and in certain cases exceeded non-clipped plants in height. But the height of the rice plant clipped after the differentiation of ear primordia was somewhat smaller than that of non-clipped. b) Growth rate was rather rapid in the case of severe cutting, and the height of slightly clipped plants was taller than that of non-clipped plants. However, rice plants clipped to the extent of 2/3 of plant height did not fully recover the damage of defoliation compared to non-clipped plants. c) Nitrogen dressing was effective to rapid recovery of defoliation, the effect increasing with the increasing amount of application. d) Ear-heading was delayed in clipped plots, and this tendency was more apparent with later clipping time, more severe clipping, and increased amounts of nitrogen application after cutting. The range was 6 days at maximum. 2. Effect of defoliation on the yield and its components of rice plants: The yield response to clipping varied somewhat with its time, degree, and nitrogen application after cutting: yield increase of about 10% and decreasement of about 25% at maximum compared to the control plot. Grain yield of most plots was decreased. a) Clipping before the differentiation of ear primordia did not much affect the agronomic characteristics of rice plants. However, clipping after that growth stage decreased culm length, number of panicles, number of spikelets per panicle, and maturing rate of grain to some extent. Consequently this treatment resulted in decrease of about 10% in grain and straw production in spite of increase in panicle length and effective tillering rate. b) Slight, clipping decreased number of spikelets per panicle a little, and the yield of grain and straw by 4-5%, although effective tillering rate was somewhat increased. With severe clipping, panicle kngth, number of panicles, and number of spikelets per panicle decreased more, and the yield of grain and straw decreased about 10%. c) Nitrogen dressing after clipping at the rate of 2 kg per 10 are was effective in increasing grain yield. Nitrogen application over the rate of 4 kg per 10 are increased culm length, number of spikelets per panicle, and straw production, but this decreased the maturing rate, and the 1, 000-grains weight to some extent and resulted in decrease of grain yield.

  • Dextromethorphan HBr (DMP HBr) ion exchange albumin microcapsules were prepared by the interfacial polymerization method. The incorporation of drugs in empty albumin microcapsules was more increased in case of glutaraldehyde (GA) and formaldehyde (FA) than terephthaloyl chloride (TC) as a cross linking agent. The amount of DMP HBr incorporated into empty albumin micorcapsules was augemented with increasing DMP HBr concentration and the amount of empty microcapsules in the incorporation medium. Increasing the salt concentration in the release medium, the release rate and the DMP HBr amount released from microcapsules were increased. The release rates of DMP HBr from microcapsules retarded considerably compared with DMP HBr powder.
