  • Myositis ossificans progressiva, also known as 'fibrodysplasia ossificans progressiva' is a rare disorder, most probably inherited as a mendelian dominant trait with irregular penetrance. It is characterized by congenital malformations of the great toes and progressive edema, calcification and ossification of the fasciae, aponeurosis, ligaments, tendons, and connective tissue in interstitial tissues of skeletal muscle. The basic defect is in the connective tissue, whereas the skeletal muscle remains fundamentally normal. We report two cases of a brother and sister whose the disorder is involved in a same family.

  • The compiled recent precise age data for the plutonic intrusions of Korean peninsula display that the Jurassic igneous activities occurred on the Yeongnam massif since ca. 200 Ma close to the boundary between Triassic and Jurassic. Since then the igneous activities propagated toward further north through time. The Jurassic igneous activities over the Okcheon belt and its vicinity areas began at about 180 Ma when igneous activities of the Yeongnam massif had been almost over. The igneous activities within the Gyeonggi massif located further north started at somewhat later period ca. 170 Ma. Jurassic igneous activities over the Okcheon belt and its vicinity areas ended a little earlier than the Gyeonggi massif area. Such timing differences upon geographic positions within the Korean peninsula seem to reflect variations in distance to the trench, in the direction of subduction, and/or in subduction angle. Therefore precise understanding of the variations in emplacement ages of Jurassic plutons within Korean peninsula can be a important clue to reconstruct the paleogeography and tectonic environment of the northeast Asia during the Jurassic.

  • The primary utilization of recently improved (U-Th)/He thermochronometry is to reveal the low-T thermal histories of shallow crustal sections or transient episodes (such as wildfires or meteorite impacts) because of the high sensitivity of He diffusion to temperature in host minerals. In this contribution, we present reviews and perspectives regarding how this method can be used to characterize the ejection-related shock metamorphism of Martian meteorites. The temperature conditions of shock metamorphism can be constrained through shock recovery experiments, paleomagnetism, and $^{40}Ar/^{39}Ar$ and (U-Th)/He dating. The most reliable constraints can be deduced when these independent approaches are combined. However, the thermal history of the ALH84001 Martian meteorite has been under serious debate because the different methods have yielded contrasting results. Recent work has shown how single-grain (U-Th)/He and $^{40}Ar/^{39}Ar$ dating, two noble-gas based thermochronometries with different T sensitivities, can be used to resolve this issue, providing a good example for future research on other meteorites.

  • "Hwaweon 2" was developed from an interspecific cross between Hwaseongbyeo and a wild species, Oryza rufipogon L. (IRGC 105491) based on marker-aided selection. The recurrent parent "Hwaseongbyeo" is a high grain quality cultivar with medium-maturity. Hwaweon 2 is nearly isogenic to Hwaseongbyeo except a small O. rufipogon introgression on chromosome 9. This segment was associated with genes controlling a number of traits including grain weight, heading date, culm length, and spikelets per panicle. The preliminary and replicated yield trial was conducted at Chungnam National University in 2004, 2005 and 2006. The local adaptability test was carried out by the National Seed Management Office (NSMO) in 2007 and 2008. This cultivar was registered to NSMO with a cultivar designated as "Hwaweon 2". This cultivar averaged 98cm in culm length and has a medium to late growth duration. This variety is resistant to stripe virus as the recurrent parent. Milled rice of "Hwaweon 2" is translucent and the grain quality traits are comparable to those of the recurrent parent. The yield potential of "Hwaweon 2" in grain is about 7.68 MT/ha at the ordinary fertilizer level about 14% higher than that of Hwaseongbyeo due to increase in grain weight and spikelets per panicle.

  • 'Hwaweon 6' was developed from a cross between 'Hwaseongbyeo' and a wild species, Oryza minuta L. (Acc. No. 101154) based on marker-assisted selection and backcrossing. The recurrent parent 'Hwaseongbyeo' is a high grain quality cultivar with medium maturity. Hwaweon 6 is nearly isogenic to Hwaseongbyeo except a small O. minuta introgressed segment on chromosome 7 harboring genes related with spikelets per panicle. The preliminary and replicated yield trial was conducted at Chungnam National University and Chungcheongnamdo Agricultural Research & Extension (CARES), Yesan in 2009 and 2010. The local adaptability test was carried out by the National Seed Management Office (NSMO) in 2011 and 2012. This cultivar was registered to NSMO with a cultivar designated as Hwaweon 6. This cultivar averaged 80cm in culm length and has a medium growth duration. Milled rice of Hwaweon 6 is translucent and the grain quality traits are comparable to those of the recurrent parent. The average yield potential of Hwaweon 6 in grain was about 6.57 MT/ha at the ordinary fertilizer level for two years about 3.0% higher than that of Hwaseongbyeo due to an introgression of the quantitative trait locus (QTL) for spikelets per panicle (qSPP7) from O. minuta. This variety is comparable to Hwaseongbyeo in low temperature germinability and cold tolerance. The qSPP7 QTL would be useful in enhancing yield potential in rice breeding program.

  • "Samkwang1," a japonica rice variety, was developed as a cross between "Samkwang" and F1 of Suwon152 (IT008283), which has a medium maturing and lodging resistance and Samkwang (IT284608), a high quality variety with bacterial blight resistance and mid-late maturing property by the rice breeding team at NICS in 2015. The heading date of "Samkwang1" was August 8 in the middle plain area, which was 2 days early than that of "Hwaseong." "Samkwang1" had a culm length of 77 cm, which was 7 cm shorter than that of "Hwaseong," and it had 128 spikelets per panicle. The viviparous germination rate of "Samkwang1" was 2.1%. "Samkwang1" showed resistance to blast, bacterial blight (K1, K2, and K3 race) and stripe virus, but was susceptible to the K3a race of bacterial blight, dwarf and black streak dwarf viruses, and plant hoppers. The milled rice of this variety exhibits translucent and medium short grains. The cooked rice grains of "Samkwang1" have an excellent palatability index (0.35) and lower protein content (6.2%) than that of "Hwaseong." The characteristics related to grain milling were better than those of "Hwaseong," especially the head rice milling recovery ratio and head rice ratio (94.2%). "Samkwang1" showed 5.62 MT/ha of milled rice productivity at 11 sites under ordinary cultivation conditions (Registration No. 6798).
