  • In this study, two mesostigmatic mites, Holostaspella crenulata Krantz, 1967 (Machrochelidae) and Lasioseius floridensis Berlese, 1916 (Blattisociidae) are recognized in Korea for the first time. The diagnoses, distributional data, drawing plates, and microscopic photographs are provided for each species.

  • ${\alpha}$-glucosidase inhibitory compounds (1-4) in a 50% methanol extract of Euonymus alatus were isolated by activity-based fractionations and the structures determined on the basis of chemical and spectral characterization techniques such as $^1H$ and $^{13}C$ nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, $^1H-^1H$ correlation spectroscopy (COSY), and heteronuclear multiple bond correlation (HMBC). The compounds 1-4 belong to flavonols and exhibited potent inhibitory activities against ${\alpha}$-glucosidase, with $IC_{50}$ values of 25.3, 17.1, 47.3, and $35.1{\mu}M$, respectively. All the isolated compounds were more potent than the positive control acarbose. This is the first report describing the potential hypoglycemic effect of Euonymus alatus through ${\alpha}$-glucosidase inhibition and identification of its active components.

  • The point of impact, the shot group, and the flight traces depend on the combination of unique features which decide moving traces of the arrow (paradox of the archer, length of the arrow shaft, weight, angle of the feather, and spline of the arrow shaft). The more dense the impact points in the shot group and the earlier elimination of paradox of the archer, the higher assessment is given for the product. However, there is no way to objectively assess the efficiency and quality of the arrow, and there is no numeric data to be used as the basis for comparison with other products. Although capturing the images of flying arrow using a high-speed motion picture camera is possible, we are limited to observation from specific view angle only. Hence, the criteria for efficiency and quality assessment are mostly based on subjective opinions of experts or hunters, or review on consumers' remarks. In this paper, we propose a hardware composition that are based on three detection frames consisting of line lasers and photo diode arrays without the high-speed motion picture camera. Predicated on measured coordinates data, a nobel method for the archer's paradox measurement, a key parameter that determine the arrow's trajectory, and corresponding numerical analysis model is proposed.

  • Antioxidant activity and biological properties in the MeOH extracts from different plant parts of Euonymus alatus (THNUB.) were measured by DPPH free radical scavenging ability and inhibition ability against xanthine/xanthine oxidase and proliferation in HL-60 cells. DPPH free radical scavenging activities in extracts of plant parts were high such as leaf, wing, root, seed and stem, respectively. The EtOAc fractions of plant parts were purified through LH-20 column chromatography and identified by GC/MS. LH-4 fraction and LH-5 fraction of leaf, stem and root showed stronger activities than other fractions in the inhibitor activity of DPPH and xanthine/ xanthine oxidase. $IC_{50}$ values of LH-4 fraction eluted from stem extracts showed such as 2.38 and 5.32 in DPPH and xanthine/ xanthine oxidase assay. Polyphenolic compounds were identified in purified LH-20 fractions showed highest $IC_{50}$ value in DPPH and xanthine/xanthine oxidase assay The activity of POD according to sampling time was high in root harvested in May and leaf harvested in September, respectively. The activity of SOD showed only in the extracts of stem in plant parts. SOD and POD in leaf were similar in the patterns of isozyme to those of stem. The purified extracts from Euonymus alatus (THNUB.) exerted inhibition ability of proliferation in HL-60 cells.

  • Recent Korean popular films and television dramas represent journalist as the character who colludes with corrupt power to engage in scandals or completes one's goals by good or bad means. It matters that the negative discourse of journalists fosters audience's distrust on journalism. Representation of journalists in popular culture is related to the reliability of journalism. In relation, it is noticeable that popular media represent female journalists. This study examines how recent popular films deal with female journalists through the case of (2011) and (2012) to find improvement of discourse on journalists. In result, three female characters in these films represent positively 'reformative leadership' (Chief Cho in ), 'appropriation of information technology'(Seong Hyo Kwan in ), and 'emotional response' (Jang Eun Seo in ). Compared to representation of journalists through male, the positive representation of female journalists constributes to positive discourse on role and function of journalism. However, it may be considered that these positive representations are merely a part of whole journalists.

  • In order to effectively utilize marine animal skin wastes in marine processing manufacture, conger eel skin, file fish skin and arrow squid skin as raw material of edible gelatin were screened. Conger eel skin was the highest in the collagen content, followed by Ole fish skin and arrow squid skin, in the order named. In the fish skins, the soluble and insoluble collagens occupied $67.4%{\sim}72.3%\;and\;27.7{\sim}32.6%$, respectively, and in the arrow squid skin, 30.4ft and 69.6ft, respectively. No difference in the amino acid composition between soluble and insoluble collagens was detected. Collagen from the marine animal skin catched in coasted and offshore water in Korea consisted ${\alpha}$ chain and ${\beta}$ chain, and ${\alpha}$ chain were hetero type. The sum of proline and hydroxyproline contents in conger eel skin collagen was higher than that in the other skin collagens, while was lower than that pork skin collagen. Conger eel skin collagen exhibited a higher denaturation temperature in solution and a higher degree of proline hydroxylation, compared with skin collagen of the respective species. The physical properties such as gel strength, melting point and gelling point of conger eel skin gelatin were superior to those of file fish skin and arrow squid skin gelatins.
