  • In this study, sloshing effects on the heat transfer coefficient of the vertical walls in a membrane type LNG cargo containment system (CCS) were analyzed. To develop correlations of the heat transfer coefficient incorporating sloshing effects, experiments were conducted to measure the heat transfer coefficient of an oscillating vertical plate. Based on experiments, two different correlations were developed which are each applicable to vertical and horizontal oscillations. Using the developed correlations, the heat flow rate penetrated into the vertical walls in KC-1 CCS was investigated under sloshing conditions. The results showed that the penetrated heat flow rate increases with the sloshing speed, which is defined as the product of the sloshing amplitude and the frequency. The maximum increase ratio of the heat flow rate was found to be about 7.5% at the sloshing speed of 10m/s. Also, it was found that the penetrated heat flow rate more increases when the CCS oscillates in the perpendicular direction to the vertical walls, than the parallel direction to the vertical walls. This study suggests that the increase in wall heat transfer coefficients has to be considered when evaluating the boil-off rate of CCSs that are shaking due to sloshing.

  • Electrochemical capacitors are becoming attractive energy storage systems particularly for applications involving high power requirements such as hybrid systems consisting of batteries and electrochemical capacitors for electric vehicle propulsion. Both of amorphous cobalt oxide and manganese dioxide were prepared by sol-gel process reported in our previous work. Nanostructured supramolecular oligomer of 1,5-diaminoanthraquinone(DAAQ) coated metal oxides were successfully prepared by electrochemical oxidation from an acidic non-aqueous medium. We established process parameters of the technique for the formation of nano-structured materials. Furthermore, improved the capacitive properties of the nano structured metal oxide electrodes using controlled solution chemistry. $CoO_2$ and $MnO_2$-based composite electrode showed relatively good electrochemical behaviors in acidic electrolyte system with respect to specific capacity and scan rate dependency.

  • In this study, the effect of cryogenic liquefied natural gas leakage and loading on liquefied natural gas cargo hold is investigated to observe the performance of the polymer foam material that comprises the cryogenic insulation of the cargo hold. The primary barriers of liquefied natural gas carrier that are in contact with the liquefied natural gas will leak if damage is accumulated, owing to fluid impact loads or liquefied natural gas loading / unloading over a long period. The leakage of the cryogenic fluid affects the interior of the polymer foam, which is a porous closed cell structure, and causes a change in behavior with respect to the working load. In this study, mechanical properties of polyisocyanurate foam specimen, which is a polymer material used as insulation, are evaluated. The performance of the specimens, owing to the cold brittleness and the impregnation effects of the cryogenic fluids, are quantitatively compared and analyzed.

  • LNG carriers have, up to 2006, mainly been driven by steam turbines. The Boil-Off Gas from the LNG cargo tanks has so far been used as fuel. This is a costly solution that requires special skills during construction and operation. Alternative propulsion systems offer far better fuel economical efficiency than steam turbines. Instead of previous practice using Boil-Off Gas as a fuel, the Re-liquefaction system establishes a solution to liquefy the Boil-Off Gas and return the LNG to the cargo tanks. This Re-liquefaction of Boil-Off Gases on LNG carriers results in increased cargo deliveries and allows owners and operators to choose the most optimum propulsion system. In this study, thermodynamic cycle analysis has been performed on two type of LNG Re-liquefaction system which was designed and adopted for the Q-Flex(216,000$m^3$) and Q-Max(266,000$m^3$) LNG carrier under construction at Korea ship yards and variable key factor was simulated to compare efficiency, power and nitrogen consumption of each Re-liquefaction system.

  • Liquid natural gas is stored and transported inside cargo tank which is made of specially designed cryogenic materials such as 9% Ni steel, Al5083-O alloy and SUS304 and so on. The materials have to keep excellent ductile characteristics under the cryogenic environment, down to -163oC, in order to avoid the catastrophic sudden brittle fracture during the operation condition. High manganese steel is considered to be the promising alternative material that can replace the commonly used materials mentioned above owing to its cost effectiveness. In line with this industrial need, the mechanical properties of the high manganese steel under both room and cryogenic environment were investigated in this study focused on its tensile and fatigue behavior. In terms of the tensile strength, the ultimate tensile strength of the base material of the high manganese steel was comparable to the existing cryogenic materials, but it turned out to be undermatched one when welding is involved in. The fatigue strength of the high manganese steel under room temperature was as good as other cryogenic materials, but under cryogenic environment, slightly less than others though better than Al 5083-O alloy.

  • This paper presents the results of sloshing experiments having different fluids in model tanks with various density ratios. The experimental model consisting water and air at ambient, which has been commonly used, is not consistent in density ratio with that of an actual LNG cargo tank. Therefore, an advanced experimental scheme is developed to consider the same density ratio of LNG and NG by using a mixed gas of sulfur hexafluoride ($SF_6$) and nitrogen ($N_2$). For experimental observation, a two-dimensional model tank of 1/40 scale and a three-dimensional model tank of 1/50 scale have been manufactured and tested at various conditions. Two different fillings with various excitation frequencies under regular motions have been considered for the two-dimensional model tank, and three different filling levels under irregular motions have been imposed for the three-dimensional model tank. The density ratio between gas and liquid varies from the ratio of the ambient air and water to that of the actual LNG cargo container, and the different composition of gas is used for this variation. Based on the present experimental results, it is found that the decrease of sloshing pressure is predicted when the density ratio increases.

  • Liquefied natural gas(LNG) cargo containment system(CCS) has the primary function of ensuring both adequate structural safety with respect to sloshing load which is defined as a violent behaviour of the liquid contents in CCS due to external forced motions and thermal insulation keeping natural gas below its boiling point. Among different LNG CCS types such as independent B-type and membrane ones, Mark III CCS is considered in this paper to perform its strength assessment. Mark III CCS plate is designed and constructed by stacking various non-metallic engineering materials such as plywood, triplex, reinforced PU foam that are supported by series of mastic upon inner steel hull structure. From the viewpoint of structural analysis, this plated structure is treated as a laminated composite structure showing complex structural behaviour under external load. Advanced finite element models of Mark III CCS plate is generated and used in conjunction with ultimate strength based failure criteria from laminated composite mechanics for the strength assessment. The strength assessment is performed within the initial failure state of Mark III CCS plate. Results provide failure details such as failure locations and loads. Finally obtained results are reviewed using the loads from acceptance criteria suggested by classification.

  • 10 wt% Mn supported on various commercial $TiO_2$ catalysts were prepared by wet-impregnation method for the low temperature selective catalytic reduction (SCR) of NO with $NH_3$. A combination of various physico-chemical techniques such as BET, XRD, XPS and TPR were used to characterize these catalysts. MnOx surface densities on MnOx/$TiO_2$ catalyst were related to surface area. As MnOx surface density lowered with high dispersion, the SCR activity for low temperature was increased and the reduction temperature ($MnO_2$ ${\rightarrow}$ $Mn_2O_3$) of surface MnOx was lower. For a high SCR, MnOx could be supported on a high surface area of $TiO_2$ and should be existed a high dispersion of non-crystalline species.

  • Corrugated bulkheads have many advantages compared to stiffened bulkheads, and they have thus been used for the cargo tank bulkheads of commercial vessels, such as bulk carriers, product oil carriers, and chemical tankers. Various studies have been carried out to find the optimum corrugation shape for bulk carriers, but optimum design studies for chemical tankers with bulkheads made of high-priced materials are scarce. The purpose of this study is to develop a minimum weight design method for horizontal corrugated bulkheads for a chemical tanker. An evolution strategy (ES) that searches for a reliable global optimum point was applied as an optimization technique, and the structural safety of the optimum design was verified through structural analysis using the finite element method (FEM). The results were compared with those of an existing ship, which showed a weight reduction of about 14% with equivalent structural strength.
