Recently, interest of consumers in home furnishing products has increased steadily because of the increased time spent at home due to COVID-19. Among them, carpets made of various materials and technologies are becoming popular interior item. Academic and industrial sectors agreed on the need to produce premium design carpets. Prior research on carpet design was mostly focused on patterns, history, with insufficient investigations on the type. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to provide basic data to develop premium design carpets by analyzing their expression types. To analyze expression types, this study covered about 400 design carpets surveyed on the websites of eight major carpet companies from January 2021 to March 2021. Based on the analysis results, the five expression types of are as follows. Firstly, the expression type was expressed in various atypical forms that was deviated from the formal form. Secondly, it was a type that improves visual and tactile effects through a variety of 3-D textures. Thirdly, it was a type of diversification of motifs, which was based on the works of artists and designers in various fields. Fourthly, it was a type that combines two or more different materials and techniques. Finally, it was a modular type that can be applied in various ways to various spaces. Based on the analysis results of this study, it is hoped that the data will be helpful to produce premium design carpets in Korea.

The Wiener Werkstatte created the most avangarde textile designs in Europe at the end of the 19th and the beginning of the 20th century. This study is to examine the distinctive characteristics of the textile design of the Wiener Werkstatte. The purpose of this study is to analyze the textile designs of the various designers who had contributed to shape the characteristics of the Wiener Werkstatte at various stages, and to catagorize the designs according to the subject matter, the design sources, the layout, the design principles, and the usages. The textiles of the first half of the Wiener Werkstatte are wovens for the homefurnishings. They were used as upolsteries. Wall coverings, and curtains in the commissioned buildings and houses which Hoffman designed and built in conjunction with the Wiener Werkstatte. The designs of this period have the simple and bold characteristics using less then three colors in a design. The subject matters used in the designs are firstly, stylized animals and plant forms; secondly, the purely geometric forms derived from the architural buildings. The textiles of the latter half of the Wiener Werkstatte put more emphasis on the printed textiles for the women's apparels. The textile designs of this period are categorized into four groups : firstly, the designs that stylized plant forms ; secondly, reinterpretational designs; thirdly, ethnic designs : and fourthly, the geometric art deco designs. The number of colors used in a design range up to 7 colors and all over, stripe, and ogee layouts are used.

Gustav KJimt (l862-1916)was a pioneer in the field of painting and decorative art. He was severly critized by the art critics of the time because of his rebellous art style. He firmly believed that there should exist a new kind of art that should portray the essence of the new liberalized era and that shoud reveal the idea of an artist in his work. Klimt was an aesthetic who sought beauty in life. He represented man as a micro universe within the macro universe. In order to portray man's inner being and to depict the process of life and death in nature, he symbolically employed female entity as a medium. Through uses of the circles, triangles, rectangles, and the spiral forms in his paintings, Klimt symbolized the meanings of man and nature. The circle symbolizes the universe and female entity; the triangle, human being; the rectangle, the earth and male entity; and the spiral, a universal force that attracts the opposite poles. The highly decorative characteristic nature of Klint's paintings and murals has often been modified in the pattern design field. It has been applied to home-furnishings and apparel textile designs, stained glasses, tiles, and posters. The techniques and layouts of these designs have been modified so that they may suit their manufacturing processes. In general, these pattern designs have two spectrums. One is the kind of design that has faithfully carried out Klimt' s original painting style. The other is the kind that has extracted the essence from the Klimt' s original art work.
