Porous membranes are widely used in industry for removing particulate matter. Unlike conventional porous membrane fabrication methods, the solution spreading phase separation method can form pores very simply. The first step is to wet the mesh with the support layer, then to let the polysulfone solution flow into a solvent without water. The solvent is readily vaporized and the polysulfone is made into a thin film. When the polysulfone solution is mixed with water to form pores, the pore size can be adjusted according to the concentration ratio of the polysulfone solution. The thickness of the membrane is easily controlled by the concentration of the solution. The porous separator has the formation of meshes intact and is very useful for forming a three-dimensional structure. The solution spreading phase separation method proposed in this study is characterized by its high cost competitiveness compared with conventional membranes due to its low production cost and easy process control.

Chitosan, second largest biomass after cellulose on earth, has potential for use as functional food package due to its antibacterial activity. However, due to high melting temperature of chitosan, chitosan films have been made by casting method. Because gelatin has relatively low molting temperature depending upon amount of plasticizer added, it was added to chitosan to produce commercially feasible film. The objective of the current study was to determine optimum blend ratio and amount of chitosan/gelatin blend solutions against antibacterial activities for extruder resin. Gram-positive bacteria (Bacillus cereus ATCC 14579 and Listeria monocytogenes ATCC 15313) and -negative bacteria (Escherichia coli ATCC 25922 and Salmonella enteritidis IFO 3313) were used. Paper (8 mm) diffusion and optical density methods were used to evaluate effect of different blending ratio solutions on the inhibition of bacterial growth. Measured clear none size ranged from 8 mm to 18.07 mm in paper diffusion test. For B. cereus, E. coli, and S. enteritidis, addition of $50\;{\mu}L$ blend solution (chitosan/gelatin = 2/8: 0.3 mg) resulted in clear zone on paper disc. In L. monocytogenes, inhibition effect was observed with 0.6 mg chitosan (chitosan/gelatin=4/6). Minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) values of B. cerues, L. monocytogenes, E. coli, and S. enteritidis with addition of chitosan were 0.1461, 0.2419, 0.0980, and 0.0490 mg/mL, respectively, These results indicate possibility of producing commercially feasible film with addition of optimum chitosan/gelatin amount.
In some binary solution, closed miscibility loop of temperature-composition phase diagram occurs where both an upper critical solution temperature and a lower critical solution temperature exist. It is known that this phenomena occurs if specific interaction between molecules exists. There are several ways describing the specific interaction. In this work it is assumed that the total number of specific interactions is distributed according to binomial distribution. In this case, exact mathematical conditions for closed miscibility loop phase behavior are derived when the specific interaction is applied to regular solution theory, quasichemical theory and Flory-Huggins lattice theory. And we investigated the effect of parameters on the phase diagram. The phase diagram of water-nicotine is calculated and compared with experimental data.

This study was conducted to increase the shelf life of peeled-garlic by edible coating material such as carboxymethyl cellulose(CMC) with sodium benzoate, citric acid and lecithin. Peeled-garlic were stored in a storage chamber at $25^{\circ}C$ and were taken at regular intervals for analysis. The changes in weight loss, colour change, browning, decaying loss and texture of the coated samples with storage time were investigated in comparison with the uncoated samples to determine the delay in the deterioration time of the samples. The coatings contributed to a lower reduction in weight loss. The coatings decreased the browning and decaying loss loses in comparison to the uncoated peeled-garlic. It was possible to extend the storage period with lower weight loss until 32 days by coating peeled-garlic surfaces with emulsions containing CMC. It was found that the emulsion prepared using the mixture of lecithin, CMC, citric acid, sodium benzoate and water was suitable for the coating of peeled-garlic.
We fabricated a composite carbon electrode to remove nitrate ions selectively from a mixed solution of anions. The electrode was fabricated by coating the surface of a carbon electrode with the nitrate-selective anion exchange resin (BHP55, Bonlite Co.) powder. We performed capacitive deionization (CDI) experiments on a mixed solution containing chloride, nitrate, and sulfate ions using a BHP55 cell constructed with the fabricated electrode. The removal of nitrate ions in the BHP55 cell was compared to that of a membrane capacitive deionization (MCDI) cell constructed with ion exchange membranes. The total quantity of ions adsorbed in BHP55 cell was $38.3meq/m^2$, which is 31% greater than that of MCDI cell. In addition, the number of nitrate adsorption in the BHP55 cell was $15.9meq/m^2$ (42% of total adsorption), 2.1 times greater than the adsorption in the MCDI cell. The results showed that the fabricated composite carbon electrode is very effective in the selective removal of nitrate ions from a mixed solution of anions.
Solvent extraction experiments were performed to separate platinum and rhodium from mixed chloride solution by using tri 2-ethylhexyl amine (TEHA) and its mixture with TBP and LIX 63. Effects of extraction conditions on the separation of the two metals were investigated as a function of extractant concentration in the HCl concentration range from 1 to 9 M. The concentration of Pt (IV) and Rh(III) was controlled to $1{\times}10^{-3}M$ and $2{\times}10^{-4}M$, respectively. In the extraction with TEHA and its mixture, Pt was quantitatively extracted irrespective of HCl concentration, while the extraction percentage of Rh depended on the extraction condition. When the concentration of HCl in the mixed solution was low, the extraction of Rh was nil and separation of Pt and Rh was possible. Adding TBP to TEHA had little effect on the extraction of both metals, while adding LIX63 to TEHA favored the extraction of Rh.
