Since founded in 1959, it's well known that the KAPD has pioneered in the researches and clinical aspects of pediatric dentistry in Korea. It's official journal, the Journal of the KAPD, was first published in 1974 and has pressed total 956 articles up to now(March, 2001). In this study, all the articles pressed in this journal have been surveyed, focussing in their main theme, their chronological and thematic distribution. The thematic classification was made with the reference of the previous studies and renowned textbooks in pediatric dentistry. And we obtained the results as follows: 1. The researches on dental materials and dental equipments have shown continuous increase throughout the period. 2. The researches on dental caries, caries prevention and systemic disorders have occupied relatively high proportion consistently. 3. The researches on malocclusions and cysts/minor surgery have shown increasing tendency in the second period, but are decreasing in the third period. 4. The researches on craniofacial growth/development, tooth development/eruption, developmental disorders of teeth, management of eruption space have shown decreasing tendency. 5. The researches on behavioral research, oral habits, occlusion of primary-mixed dentition have shown very low proportion, reaching no more than 1% throughout the period.
The purpose of this study is to observe how the Class III intermaxillary elastics act upon the craniofacial structures of mixed dentition with anterior crossbites. The cephalometric headplafes of 16 childrens treated only with Class III elastics (C III elastics group) and 23 childrens treated with Class III elastics and Reverse pull headgear simultaneously (C III elastics + RPHG group) were traced, digitized and statistically analyzed. The results were as follows. 1 . Anterior displacement of maxilla was observed in both groups. 2. Simultaneous Class III elastics and reverse pull headgear group showed the counterclockwise rotation of maxilla, however Class III elastics group manifested no rotational change of maxilla. 3. Simultaneous Class III elastics and reverse pull headgear group showed the downward and backward rotation of mandible, however Class III elastics group manifested no rotational change of mandible. 4. Counterclockwise canting of occlusal plane, labial tipping of upper incisor and lingual tipping of lower incisor and mesial displacement of upper molar to pterygoid root vertical were observed in both groups.

This article describes the use of an activator with anterior high pull headgear to treat a skeletal Class II malocclusion in children in the mixed-dentition phase. A combination of headgear-activator appliance can inhibit forward and downward growth of the maxillary complex while stimulating mandibular growth. The correction of Class II malocclusion can be achieved by careful case selection of a motivated patient with a favorable growth pattern. The patients who have skeletal Class II malocclusions were treated by means of activator with anterior high pull headgear and the following results were observed; 1. Forward and downward growth of the maxillary complex were inhibited 2. Mandibular growth was stimulated and counterclockwise rotation of the mandible was observed. 3. Large overjet and deep overbite were corrected.
The interrelationships between growth rates (and size) of the selected cranifacial dimensions and body dimensions (height and weight) were investigated in the longitudinal data of primary school children from 6 to 11 years of age. The data were obtained from serial cephalometric radiographs and health record which were taken at one year interval. Regression analyses were used to analyze the data. The main concludions might be summarized as follows; 1. Size relationships between body height (and weigh) and S-Gn, posterior facial height (s-Go), total mandibular length (Ar-Gn) showed high significant correlation, but no association between body height, weight and anterior cranial base length (S-N). 2. Correlation coefficients between facial dimensions and body height (and weight) were getting lower with age increase. 3. At all age groups, significant prediction equation for some facial dimensions with body height and weight were obtained. 4. In this sample, the growth rates of facial dimensions and body height and weight showed almostly constant during this age period and the growth rate of body height and weight of girls was exceeded that of boys. 5. A relatively high degree of variation between individuals existed in the sample. 6. A positive correlation was found for the relationship between the growth rates of facial dimensions and those of body height (and weight) in boys and girls, but was not found in total samples.
Objectives : The purpose of this study is to investigate the correlation between amalgam restorations and urinary mercury levels in children for 1 year. Amalgam restoration has been widely used for over 200 years. But released mercury from amalgam can increase the concentration of mercury in the body. Methods : The subjects were 463 elementary school children. Oral examination, urine sampling, and questionnaire survey were performed at baseline and after 1 year. Results : Amalgam restoration increased the urinary mercury level to $0.55{\pm}0.13{\mu}g/g$ creatinine. In the regression analysis, variation of urinary mercury excretion were positively associated with amalgam surfaces and fish consumption. Conclusions : Small amount of mercury release from amalgam restoration was closely associated with increasing urinary mercury level.

Posterior crossbites are abnormal buccal, or lingual relationship of a tooth or teeth of the maxilla, the mandible, or both when the teeth of the two arches are in occlusion and involve the molars and premolars. Posterior crossbites are classified as dental, muscular(functional), or skeletal. In an effort to avoid occlusal interferences caused by the inadequate arch width, the patient deviates the mandible laterally upon closure to achieve maximum intercuspation. This is described as functional posterior crossbite. Correction of functional posterior crossbites in the primary & early mixed dentition as early as possible after diagnosis has been recommended, because crossbites do not automatically improve with the eruption of the permanent teeth. Functional posterior crossbites, if left untreated, may have deleterious effects on the development and function of the TMJ. The diagnosis and management of three cases is presented. Each patient with functional posterior crossbites is treated using the bilateral maxillary expansion appliance.

The purpose of this study was to obtain the cephalometric maxillofacial soft tissue measurements, and to define the differences that exist between males and females on the soft tissue profile who had normal occlusion in mixed dentitions. For the object of this study, cephalometric radiographs were obtained from the centric occlusion with the relaxed lip position. Copper filter was designed to obtain both hard and soft tissue structure on the same film. The subjects consist of 100 males and 100 females from 8 to 12.4 years with the normal occlusion and acceptable profiles. The author measured facial depth, vertical height from the tissue profiles in the mixed dentitions. The significant test compare males with females. The following results were obtained from the study 1. In facial convexity, much more larger females than that of males. 2. Inclination of the lip posture were more larger in maxilla (male) and in females more larger in the mandible. 3. The thickness of soft tissue were thicker in males, the height of nose were more prominent in females. 4. There were no significant differences in both sexes.

Class II malocclusion can be treated via early orthopedic, orthodontic treatment or orthognathic surgery with orthodontic treatment. In the mixed dentition, early orthopedic treatment can be used. Especially, in the case of mandibular retrognathism, the functional appliances can be used, and in the case of maxillary protrusion is combined, they can be used together with headgear. After using activator and activator combined with headgear to the class II malocclusion paitent in the mixed dentition, the results were as follows: 1. Lateral profile was improved, and lower face height was increaed. 2. Overjet was decreased, and molar relationship was changed to class I molar relationship. 3. Growth can be undisturbed, and the aggravation of malocclusion can be prevented to make the 2nd phase orthodontic treatment be much easier.

The occlusal disharmonies resulted from labially protruded or malpositioned teeth can damage the periodontium and induce the non-inflammatory gingival recession. For these cases, a conservative approach was performed by improving oral hygiene and correcting the axial and positional status of the gingivally recessed teeth and removing the prematurely contacted areas. In some cases, rapid remission of tooth mobility and gradual decrease of gingival recession was observed just after start of treatment. In cases of gingival recession in permanent lower incisors of the children with mixed dentition, the treatment of choice is non-surgical conservative approaches. In cases when the gingival inflammation can be controlled through reinforcing the oral hygiene, when attached gingiva have a potential to increase in width through growth (not more than 1 year after eruption or not yet arrived at adult level), and when the recession can be corrected by moving the teeth from labial cortical plate through orthodontic treatment, the conservative measures would be the first choice. On the contrary, when recession has exceeded beyond the level of CEJ, when the gingival inflammation existed with the cause of poor oral hygiene, when the attached gingiva have little potential to increase (for example, more than 8 years after eruption), and when the conservative measures yielded no benefit after 4-8 weeks of treatment, the surgical approaches should be sought.
The purpose of this study was to evaluate treatment effects of the modified Teuscher appliance (MTA) in early Class II division 1 malocclusion. For this purpose, treatment effects of the bionator were compared with those of the MTA. The twenty subjects who were treated excellently with bionator and MTA were selected in each group. In pre- and post-treatment lateral cephalograms, 50 variables were measured, and then the differences between pretreatment and posttreatment data of the bionator and the MTA were statistically evaluated by t-test. The results were as follows : 1. The linear measurements that showed large difference between the bionator group and the MTA group are U1 to FH, U1 to PP, U6 to FH, U6 to PP, Ar-Pog, ramus height, L1 to A-Pog, L1 to facial plane (p<0.05). 2. The angular measurements that showed large difference between the bionator group and the MTA group are SNB, SNA, FABA, APDI (p<0.05). 3. The measurements of the growth pattern such as facial height ratio, FMA, SN-MP angle showed no difference between two groups (p>0.05). These results suggest that the bionator influence the mandiblar growth and lower dentoalveolar structures more than the MTA, and the MTA influence upper jaw and upper dentoalveolar structures more than the bionator comparatively in early Class II division I malocclusion.
