  • Cell formation(CF) Is to group parts with similar geometry, function, material and process into part families, and the corresponding machines into machine cells. Cell formation solutions often contain exceptional elements(EEs). Also, the following objective functions - minimizing the total costs of dealing with exceptional elements and maximizing total similarity coefficients between parts - have been used in CF modeling. Thus, multiobjective programming approach can be developed to model cell formation problems with two conflicting objective functions. This paper presents an effective cell formation method with fuzzy multiobjective nonlinear mixed-integer programming simultaneously to form machine cells and to minimize the cost of eliminating EEs.

  • Optimal methods for designing multiplierless IIR filters with cascaded prefilter-equalizer structures are proposed for narrowband applications. Assuming that an U filter consists of a cyclotomic Polynomial (CP) prefilter and an all-Pole equalizer based on interpolated first order polynomial (IFOP), in the proposed method the prefilter and equalizer are simultaneously designed using mixed integer linear programming (MILP). The resulting filter is a cascaded filter with minimal complexity. In addition, MtP tries to minimize both computational complexity and phase response non-linearity. Design examples demonstrate that the proposed methods produce a more efficient cascaded prefilter-equalizer than existing methods.

  • This study solves the decision making problems for TFT-LCD manufacturing supply chain with demand and price uncertainties by establishing robust production and distribution strategies. In order to control the decisions regarding production graded by quality, inventory level and distribution, this study develop scenario model based stochastic mixed integer linear programs (SMILPs) that consider demand and price uncertainties as well as realistic constraints such as capacities etc. The performance of the solution obtained from the SMILPs using robust algorithms will be evaluated through various scenarios.

  • Several problems caused by inevitable increment of airplane have been issued. The most effective solution to solve the issues is considered as establishing appropriate Air Traffic Management (ATM) that reduces aircraft's delay at an airport and intensify the airport's capacity. The purpose of this paper is to produce the optimum aircraft schedules that maximize the aircraft throughput by smooth air traffic flow near terminal area of an airport In this paper, mathematical formulations of the scheduling problem are firstly specified. Based on the mathematical modelling, an Optimization-Based Flight Scheduler that provides the optimum flight schedules for arriving aircraft is developed by introducing the Mixed Integer Linear Programming(MILP) and the Genetic Algorithms(GA). With this scheduler, we calculated the optimum schedules to compare to real schedule data from an Incheon Airport. As a result, it is validated that aircraft throughput produced by the optimum schedule is much better than that of the schedule from the Incheon airport. The optimization-based flight scheduler is expected to deal with problems due to the aircraft saturation in near future.

Assuming that an FIR filter consists of a cyclotomic polynomial(CP) prefilter and an interpolated second order polynomial(ISOP) equalizer, in the proposed method the prefilter and equalizer are simultaneously designed using mixed integer linear programming(MILP). • We calculate the benefit of distributed combined heat power generators from avoiding a transmission expansion cost by building distributed generators near electricity demand centers. We determine a transmission expansion plan by solving a mixed integer linear problem, where we modify capacities of existing transmission lines and build new transmission lines. We calculate the benefit by comparing the sum of generation and transmission expansion costs with or without distributed generators through two simulation frames. In the first frame, for the current demand, we substitute existing distributed generators for non-distributed generators and measure an additional cost to balance the generation and demand. In the second frame, for increased future demand, we compare the cost to invest only in distributed generators to the cost to invest only in non-distributed generators. As a result, we show that the distributed generators have at least 5.8 won/kWh of the benefit from avoiding the transmission expansion cost.

  • In this paper we performed evaluation of the economics of a district heating system (DHS) consisting of energy suppliers and consumers, heat generation and storage facilities and power transmission lines in the capital region, as well as identification of optimal operating conditions. The optimization problem is formulated as a mixed integer linear programming (MILP) problem where the objective is to minimize the overall operating cost of DHS while satisfying heat demand during 1 week and operating limits on DHS facilities. This paper also propose a new forecasting model of the system marginal price (SMP) using past data on power supply and demand as well as past cost data. In the optimization, both the forecasted SMP and actual SMP are used and the results are analyzed. The salient feature of the proposed approach is that it exhibits excellent predicting performance to give improved energy efficiency in the integrated DHS.

  • Conventional traffic signal optimization models assume that green intervals for pedestrian crossings are given as exogenous inputs such as minimum green intervals for straight-ahead movements. As the result, in reality, the green intervals of traffic movements may not distribute adequately by the volume/saturation-flow of them. In this paper, we proposed signal optimization models formulated in BMILP to integrate pedestrian crossings into traffic movements under under-saturated traffic flow. The model simultaneously optimizes traffic and pedestrian movements to minimize weighted queues of primary queues during red interval and secondary queues during queue clearance time. A set of linear objective function and constraints set up to ensure the conditions with respect to pedestrian and traffic maneuvers. Numerical examples are given by pedestrian green intervals and the number of pedestrian crossings located at an arm. Optimization results illustrated that pedestrian green intervals using proposed models are greater than those using TRANSYT-7F, but opposite in the ratios of pedestrian green intervals to the cycle lengths. The simulation results show that proposed models are superior to TRANSYT-7F in reducing delay, where the longer the pedestrian green interval the greater the effect.

  • The major reason to construct large dams is to store surplus water during rainy seasons and utilize it for water supply in dry seasons. Reservoir storage has to meet a pre-defined target to satisfy water demands and cope with a dry season when the availability of water resources are limited temporally as well as spatially. In this study, a Hedging rule that reduces total reservoir outflow as drought starts is applied to alleviate severe water shortages. Five stages for reducing outflow based on the current reservoir storage are proposed as the Hedging rule. The objective function is to minimize the total discrepancies between the target and actual reservoir storage, water supply and demand, and required minimum river discharge and actual river flow. Mixed Integer Linear Programming (MILP) is used to develop a multi-reservoir operation system with the Hedging rule. The developed system is applied for the Han River basin that includes four multi-purpose dams and one water supplying reservoir. One of the fours dams is primarily for power generation. Ten-day-based runoff from subbasins and water demand in 2003 and water supply plan to water users from the reservoirs are used from "Long Term Comprehensive Plan for Water Resources in Korea" and "Practical Handbook of Dam Operation in Korea", respectively. The model was optimized by GAMS/CPLEX which is LP/MIP solver using a branch-and-cut algorithm. As results, 99.99% of municipal demand, 99.91% of agricultural demand and 100.00% of minimum river discharge were satisfied and, at the same time, dam storage compared to the storage efficiency increased 10.04% which is a real operation data in 2003.
