  • A thermo-poro-elastic constitutive model of unidirectionally fiber-reinforced composite materials is suggested by extending the unmixing-mixing scheme which is based upon composite micromechanics. The strain components of thermal expansion due to a temperature change, gas pressure in pores, and chemical shrinkage are included in the constitutive model. On purpose to verify the derived constitutive relations, the representative volume element of two-dimensional lamina subject to various loading conditions is analyzed by the finite element method. The overall stress and strain responses are obtained, and compared with the predicted values by the unmixing-mixing scheme. The numerical results show the usefulness of the proposed model to predict the thermoelastic behavior of porous composites.

  • A study on mechanical property characterization and modeling technique was carried out to approximate the behaviour of structures with 2.5D C/SiC material. Several tensile tests were performed to analyze the behaviour characteristics of the 2.5D C/SiC material and elastic property was characterized by applying a mathematical homogenization and a modified rule of mixture. SiC matrix representing the elasto-plastic behavior approximates as a bilinear function. Then the equivalent yield strength and equivalent plastic stiffness were calculated by minimizing errors in experiment and approximation. RVE(Representative Volume Element)was defined from the fiber and matrix configuration of 2.5D C/SiC and a process of calculating the effective stiffness matrix by applying the modified rule of mixture to RVE was implemented in the ABAQUS User-defined subroutine. Finite element analysis was performed by applying the mechanical properties of fiber and matrix calculated based on the proposed process, and the results were in good agreement with the experimental results.

  • The applications of reduced integration technique, addition of nonconforming modes, and their coupling to the Mindlin plate elements to improve their basic behavior are reviewed and the establishment of a series of new plate elements by combined use of these schemes are presented in this paper. The element formulation is based upon quadratic Mindlin plate concept. The results obtained by new elements converged to the exact solutions very rapidly as the mesh is refined and showed reliable solutions even for severely distorted meshes. The new elements have the requisite numbers of zero eigenvalues associated with rigid body modes to avoid the spurious zero energy modes. These elements are shown to be applicable to the wide range of plate problems, giving a high accuracy for both thick and thin plates.

  • The purpose of this study was to analyze the stress distribution aspect of unrestored and restored combined shape (wedge shape occulusally and saucer shape gingivally) class V cavity, which found frequently in clinical cases. A maxillary second permolar restored with a combined shape class V composite restorations were modeled using the three dimensional finite element method. Static occlusal load of 170 N was applied on lingual incline of buccal cusp at the angle of $45^{\circ}$ with the longitudinal axis of the tooth. And three dimensional finite element analysis was taken by ANSYS (Version 6.0, Swanson Analysis System Co., Houston, U.S.A) program which represent the stress distribution on unrestored and restored cavity wall and margin. The conclusions were as follows. 1. Compared to the unrestored cavity, Von Mises stress at the cementoenamel junction and line angle of the cavity base were reduced and in restored cavity. 2. Von Mises stress at the occlusal and cervical cavity margin and wall were increased in restored cavity in comparison with the unrestored cavity. 3. In the hybrid and hybrid/flowable composite resin restoration, Von Mises stress at the cementoenamel junction and line angle of the cavity base were reduced more than in the flowable restoration. 4. In the hybrid and hybrid/flowable composite resin restoration, Von Mises stress at the occlusal and cervical cavity margin and wall were increased more than in the flowable restoration.

  • The conventional numerical models to analyze flow in subsurface porous media under the transient state usually generate numerical oscillation and unstability due to local flux domain for critical cases such as infiltration into initially dry soil during rainfall period. In this case, it is required refined mesh and small time step, but it decrease efficiency of computation. In this study, numerical unstability in discontinuity domain is removed by applying particle tracking algorithm to simulate unsteady subsurface flow with inflow boundary condition. Finally the hybrid LE FEM improving numerical stability is proposed. The hypothetical domains with unsteady uniform and nonuniform flow field were used to demonstrated algorithm verification. In comparison with analytic solution, we obtained reasonable results and conducted simulation of hypothetical 3-D recharge/pumping area. The proposed algorithm can simulate saturated/unsaturated porous media with more practical problems and will greatly contribute to accuracy and stability of numerical computation.

  • In this paper, two different techniques for mixed-mode type engineering fracture mechanics are investigated to estimate the stress intensity factors by using p-version finite element model. These two techniques are displacement extrapolation with COD and CSD method and J-integral with decomposition method. By decomposing the displacement field obtained from p-version of finite element analysis into symmetric and antisymmetric displacement fields with respect to the crack line, Mode-I and Mode-II stress intensity factors can be determined using aforementioned techniques. The example problems for validating the proposed techniques are centrally and centrally oblique cracked panels under tension. The numerical results associated with the variation of oblique angle and the ratio of crack length and panel width (a /W ratio) are compared with those by theoretical values and empirical solutions in literatures. Very good agreements with the existing solutions are shown.

  • The failure load and mode of the unidirectional and fabric hybrid composite laminate joints are studied by test and finite element analysis. Test is conducted for the specimens with nine various geometries under pin loading. Finite element analysis is performed considering the contact and friction effects between the pin and laminate by MSC/NASTRAN. Failure is estimated by Tsai-Wu and Yamada-Sun criteria on the characteristic curve. While the failure of the specimens with the small width and edge length are much affected by the joint geometry, the geometry effects are negligible in the specimens with large width and edge length. Finite element analysis based on the characteristic length method reasonably predicts the failure load and mode of the joints.

  • The paper processed settlement analysis using Finite Elements Method(FEM). Because Stress Distribution Ratio has to be decreased, for settlement analysis of soft clay deposit improved by sand compaction piles(SCP). Back analysis was processed comparing the measured settlements of laboratory model tests and finite element analysis where the SCP treated area was assumed as mixed ground with clay deposit rather than being a composite ground. The paper proposes a methodology which employs a compression index($C_c$) for settlement analysis of soft clay deposit improved by sand compaction piles from the back analysis. This approach is applied to a field measurement case(A revetment founded on the SCP improved clay deposit with the replacement ratio of 45%).
