  • The objective of this study was to determine effects of corn germ meal(CGM) and condensed molasses fermentation solubles(CMS) as the replacement of rice bran on mycelial growth and density in various mushrooms. The results of this study showed that CGM and CMS might be utilized more efficiently than rice bran in culturing mushrooms. The results are as follows; 1. Mycelial growth of Pleurotus ostreatus was remarkably higher than that of control when the concentration of CGM and CMS was 10%, respectively. However, the mycelial density was lower than that of control. Thus, Considering the mycelial growth as well as density, it was found that 20% supplements of CGM and CMS resulted in the best with 78mm/10d and 71mm/10d, respectively. 2. Mycelial growth of Pleurotus eryngii in the treatment group of 10% CMS and 20% CGM showed 74mm/10d and 67mm/10d, respectively. This result tended to be equal or somewhat lower compared with that of control(74mm/10d). 3. Mycelial growth of Flamulina velutipes was 87mm/10d in the treatment of 10% CMS, 79mm/10d in the treatment of 20% CGM, which showed significantly higher than that of control(56mm/10d). When the contents of CGM and CMS were mixed with the amount of 10-30%, Thus, it was assumed that the quantity of mushrooms may increase with the supplements of CEM and CMS. 4. Mycelial growth of Lentinus edodes in the treatment group of 10-40% CMS and 10-30% CGM showed 58-52mm/10d and 56-49mm/10d, respectively. This result was significantly higher that control(47mm/10d). 5. When CMS and CGM were supplememted with the level of 10-30%, mycelial growth rate of Ganoderma lucidum showed 76-72mm/10d and 74-69mm/10d, respectively, which are higher than those of control.

  • Effect on blast lesion development was investigated in rice cultivar Milyang 23 and Jinheung using two races of Pyricularia oryzae compatible or incompatible to each of two rice cultivars. Discase lesions were measured in rice when inoculated with inoculum mixed with compatible and incompatible races, inoculated with a compatible race following with an incompatible race and vice versa. Lesions were smaller when rice was incoulated with an incompatible race and then inoculated with a compatible race than those inoculated in the reverse way both at the inoculated site and at 3cm-upper part from inoculated spot. The results suggested that induced resistance might play a role in suppression of lesion development although such an effect appeared to be influenced by heavy application of nitrogen fertilizer.

  • The objective of this research was to secure the fundamental information in changes of soil physical properties as influenced by the compaction of root media during container filling. Three root media were formulated by blending peatmoss (PM) with expanded rice hull (PM + ERH, 8:2, v/v), carbonized rice hull (PM + CRH, 6:4) and ground and aged pine bark (PM + GAPB, 8:2). Based on the optimum bulk density, the amount of root media filled into 6.0, 7.5, 8.5, 10.5 and 12.5 cm were adjusted to 90, 100, 110, 120, and 130%, then the changes in total porosity (TP), container capacity (CC), and air-filled porosity (AFP) were measured. The TP decreased significantly as the packing amount of three root media were elevated in all sizes of container. The TP did not show significant differences among the root media in small sizes of containers, but showed significant differences when sizes of containers became larger. As packing amount of three root media were elevated, the CCs in all sizes of containers were decreased. The PM + CRH had the lowest CC among three root media in containers smaller than 8.5 cm, but had the highest CC in those larger than 10.5 cm. These results indicated that the decreases in CC were influenced by the sizes of containers as well as kinds of root media. The elevation of packing amount in three root media diminished significantly the AFP. The AFP in PM + GAPB medium was two times as high as those of PM + ERH or PM + CRH when equal packing densities were applied in all sizes of containers. As the container sizes became larger in three root media, the extents in decreasing of CC were distinct than those of AFP. Above results indicate that elevation in packing amount of three root media decreased significantly the TP, CC and AFP, but these were influenced differently by sizes of containers and kinds of root media. The results would be useful for expectation in the changes of physical properties in various sizes of containers filled with peatmoss based root media.

  • This study was conducted to investigate the horticultural media + decomposed granite + reused rock wool in the following mixing ratio: Control = 100:0, M1 = 80:0:20, M2 = 60:30:10, M3 = 40:30:30, M4 = 30:40:30, M5 = 0:50:50 (reused rockwool : decomposed granite : horticultural media) and develop the physicochemical properties and the growth of 'Sulhyang' strawberry runner plant. In the physical aspect of the horticultural media, statistical differences were recognized that the bulk density and particle density were lower in the control and M1. But the bulk density and particle density were high in the M3, M4, and M5, because it had high mixing ratio between recycled rock wool and decomposed granite. EAW and WBC showed a similar tendency. The air porosity and total porosity were higher in control and M1 than M3, M4, M5. Exchangeable cation (K+, Ca2+, Na+, Mg2+) and base replacement capacity (CEC) were higher in control and M1, than M2, M3, M4, and M5. As a result of the cultivation of 'Sulhyang' runner plant, the plant length was long in M2, 32.1 cm and smaller than M5 to 28.4 cm. However, if the crown diameter, which is the growth indicator of the runner plant, all 6 treatments were formed 11.23 mm-12.03 mm, which is considered to be suitable for the growth of the runner plant. There wasn't a statistical difference between the weight and dry weight of the root. As a result, the growth difference of the seedlings by the horticulture media was similar. Therefore, considering the physical properties of the horticultural media, it was judged that the air porosity and total porosity would be improved when the recycled rock wool and the decomposed granite were properly mixed rather than the use of the horticultural media as a single medium, which would be advantageous for irrigation management.

  • A 15-week growth trial was conducted to evaluate the economical feed formulations for Korean rockfish (Sebastes sehlegeli). Three replicate groups of fish averaging 33 g were fed one of 8 isoproteic ($49\%$) and isolipidic ($8\%$) diets containing various practical ingredients such as fish meal, meat meal, feather meal, blood meal, soybean meal, corn gluten meal, and wheat flour with or without supplemental essential amino acids. A control diet with white fish meal and brown fish meal as the only protein sources was included. Practical ingredients were substituted from $40\%$ up to $65\%$ for portions of the fish meals in the control diet. Essential amino acids (EAA) were added to the diets for balancing EAA composition of each dietary protein source. In addition, these experimental diets were compared with raw fish-based moist pellet containing $50\%$ frozen horse mackerel and $50\%$ commercial binder meal. Results indicated that animal and plant protein sources could substitute for fish meal up to $55\%$ in diet without any adverse effects on growth and chemical composition of fish. Fish growth, body composition, nutrient utilization, and cost of fish production are discussed in relation to nutritional values of the dietary protein sources.

  • In this study, field measurements were conducted in the section about 7 km from sea dike to westward. The observations of along channel current were carried out, and water temperature and salinity were measured simultaneously at 10 stations during one tidal cycle, and sampling interval is 1 hour. The maximum ebb current is about 1.5 m/s at the surface layer but flood current is 0.4 m/s at the bottom layer during discharge period. Residual current during river discharge shows two layer structures which is typical characteristic of the estuary system. On the other hand, residual current during a period with no discharge has shown multi-layer structure different from general estuarine systems. The distribution of high salinity can be seen at the bottom layer as the effect of discharge does not reach down to the bottom layer during discharge. As a result, freshwater is not effected at the bottom layer during observation, and mixing of surface layer to bottom layer is reduced by stratification.

  • Rearing condition and species of microalgae on growth and survival of the sunray surf clam, Mactra chinensis larvae were investigated for artificial seedling production. The larvae of M. chinensis on higher temperature showed high growth and low survival and was grown over $230{\mu}m$ in shell length 14 days after hatching, but low growth as $151.1{\mu}m$ at $18^{\circ}C$. The larvae of M. chinensis on salinity showed highest daily growth and survival as $11.3{\mu}m$ and 65.8% at 30 psu, respectively. The optimum of water temperature and salinity for the larval rearing were $23^{\circ}C$ and 30-35 psu over 25 psu at least. The density of larval rearing was below 10 per 1 ml in rearing seawater for elevating the development rate from D-shaped to settled (metamorphosing) stage. The larvae fed the mixed diet of Isochrysis galbana, Pavlova lutheri, Isochrysis sp. (green), Chlorella ellipsoidea showed highest growth and survival. The larvae fed the single diet of I. galbana, Isochrysis sp. (green) showed high growth and survival. But the larvae fed the single diet of P. lutheri and C. ellipsoidea showed low growth and survival. The optimum diet of larvae of M. chinensis was over two species of microalgae included I. galbana, Isochrysis sp. (green) for elevating the high growth and survival.

  • $Ni_{0.4}Zn_{0.4}Cu_{0.2}Fe_2O_4$ ferrite was fabricated by solid stat reaction method and sol-gel method. Because of the drawbacks of each method, we combined these two methods together. We proposed and experimentally verified that nanocrystalline ferrite additive was effective on improving the densification behavior and magnetic properties of NiZnCu ferrites for multilayer chip inductors. The initial permeability of the toroidal core Sample with 20 wt% nanocrystalline ferrite increased from 78.1 to 178.2 as annealing temperature is increased from $880^{\circ}C$ to $920^{\circ}C$. The density, shrinkage and saturation magnetization were increased with increasing annealing temperature, which was attributed to the decrease of additive grain size and increase of sintering density.

  • Common bulking agents in composting system include woody materials such as sawdust and woodchips. These bulking agents are mainly used for the purpose of the proper control of C/N ratio and moisture content in the composting. The topic for the effect on air permeability of bulking agents has far received relatively little attention in the composting field. This study investigated the effect of bulk density, moisture content, air-filled porosity, particle size and air flow rate on air permeability of several mixture ratios of sawdust and woodchip bulking agent. Increasing the moisture contents, the air-filled porosity was decreased and the particle size was increased for all kinds of bulking agent mixtures. Especially, with the increasing of mixing ratio of woodchip, these effects were sharply magnified. The air permeability respond to air-filled porosity was very similar to that for moisture content which was anticipated the linear relationship between air-filled porosity and moisture content. Above the region of moisture content 0.25 or 0.43(d.b.)(20 or 30% w.b.), the pressure drop decreased even though air-filled pore spaces were filling with water. Especially, to the particle size of 5 mm the pressure drop was decreased exponentially, so the air permeability was dramatically improved. By the water had the role of binding of the small particles, the macropores less resistances to air flow were created in the matrix. The effect of particle size on air permeability was much stronger than that of air-filled porosity or moisture content. And it is needed the preparing of initial particle size above 5 mm for efficient composting.
