Effects of operational conditions and solution chemistry on permeate flux in a hybrid ozone-ceramic ultra-filtration (UF) membrane system treating natural organic matter (NOM) were investigated. Results showed that the extent of permeate flux decline was higher at higher cross-flow velocity and ozone dosage, but it was higher at lower transmembrane pressure (TMP). The mechanism of fouling mitigation was found to be more dependent upon reaction between ozone and natural organic matter at/near catalytic membrane surface than scouring effect due to ozone gas bubbles. Addition of calcium into model NOM solution at high pH led to significant decline in permeate flux while the calcium effect on permeate flux decline was less pronounced at lower pH. After permeate flux decline during the early stage of filtration, the flux started recovering and approached fully to the initial value of it due to degradation of NOM by catalytic ozonation at ceramic membrane surface in the hybrid ozone-ceramic membrane system.

The mixing characteristics of pylon injection in a Scramjet combustor and effects of film cooling to protect pylon from air-heating were investigated. Three-dimensional Navier-Stokes equations with $k-{\omega}$ SST turbulence model were used. Fuel hydrogen and air were considered as coolants. There were remarkable improvements of penetration and mixing rate with the pylon injection. There was also over-heating on the front surface of the pylon without film cooling. The coolant injected parallel to the front surface of the pylon protects the pylon from over-heating.
In PVC/PS pelyblend laminated membranes, perrneabilities were increased as increasing the blend ratio of PS and selectivities were increased with increasing the blend ratio of PVC. The gas permeation mechanism was shifted from the combination of Poiseuille and Knudsen flow model to the solution-diffusion model as decreasing the PS blend ratio. The structure of polyblend laminated membranes showed series model, where PS rich phase was formed at air side and PVC rich phase was at water side. The model of permeation in the polyblend laminated membranes also showed series model structure.

Ceramic membranes are generally used for various industrial processes operating under extreme conditions because of its high thermal and chemical stability. However, due to the trade-off phenomenon of permeability and mechanical strength, preparation of high permeability-high strength membrane is necessary. In this study, the change in characteristics and performances of ceramic membranes was analyzed depending on the type of polymer binder and its mixing ratio. Because the solubility between solvent and polymer binder was higher in PSf (polysulfone) than in PES (polyethersulfone), the viscosity and discharge pressure of the PSf-based dope solution were higher than those of PES-based dope solution. When PSf was used as a polymer binder, ceramic membrane showed high mechanical strength and low water permeability due to the dense structure. On the other hand, in case of PES, the mechanical strength was slightly reduced and the water permeability was increased. It was confirmed that the optimum mixing ratio of the PSf and PES with high water permeability and mechanical strength was 9:1.
Poly(ether-block-amide) 1657 (PEBAX 1657) blended membranes with molecular weight 400 poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG 400) were prepared and their permeability was tested for the gases $N_2$, $O_2$, $CH_4$, $CO_2$, and $SO_2$ by the time-lag method. The permeation characteristics were investigated in terms of diffusivity and solubility, which are dominant factors for gas transport. With the addition of PEG 400, the permeability of all the gases increased and also the ideal selectivity for several pair gases was enhanced. In particular, selectivity for $CO_2/N_2$ ranged from 53.2 (pristine PEBAX 1657 membrane) to 84.1 (50% PEG 400 added), for $SO_2/CO_2$ from 38.9 to 50.7, and for $CO_2/CH_4$ from 17.7 to 31.4. The increase of both permeability and selectivity is mainly because of the increase of solubility of the gases, especially $CO_2$ and $SO_2$. To obtain durability against water vapor, glutaraldehyde (GA) was added to the PEBAX 1657/PEG 400 blended membranes. As a result, permeability decreased owing to a reduction of the free volume and ether oxide units, which are the main factors in elevating the permeability for the blended membranes, and selectivity decrease however; we believe that the durability of the resulting membranes would be increased.
Porous membranes are widely used in industry for removing particulate matter. Unlike conventional porous membrane fabrication methods, the solution spreading phase separation method can form pores very simply. The first step is to wet the mesh with the support layer, then to let the polysulfone solution flow into a solvent without water. The solvent is readily vaporized and the polysulfone is made into a thin film. When the polysulfone solution is mixed with water to form pores, the pore size can be adjusted according to the concentration ratio of the polysulfone solution. The thickness of the membrane is easily controlled by the concentration of the solution. The porous separator has the formation of meshes intact and is very useful for forming a three-dimensional structure. The solution spreading phase separation method proposed in this study is characterized by its high cost competitiveness compared with conventional membranes due to its low production cost and easy process control.

For stable combustion and safety of a structure of the propulsion system, a cooling system to the liquid rocket engine should be incorporated. In this study, Eulerian-Lagrangian scheme for two phase combustion, nongray radiation and soot formation effect, and film-wall interaction have been introduced to study the effect of film cooling. After briefly introducing the governing equation, combustion characteristics with change of wall temperature has been investigated by varying such parameters as fuel mass fraction for film cooling, diameter of the fuel droplet, overall mixture fraction of oxygen to fuel. Also, radiative heat flux is compared with the conductive one at the combustor wall.
BN films composed of c-BN(70%) and h-BN(30%) phases have been synthesized by the ion beam assisted deposition (IBAD) process and stabilized by post-annealing. Boron was e-beam evaporated at 1.2 $\AA$/sec and nitrogen was ionized and accelerated at about 100 eV by the end-hall type ion gun. Substrates were negatively biased by DC 400 and 500 V, respectively, and heated at $700^{\circ}C$. Synthesized BN films were in-situ post-annealed at 700 or $800^{\circ}C$, respectively, for 1 hr without breaking vacuum. BN films without post-annealing were peeled off from substrates immediately when they were exposed to the air while those with post-annealing at $800^{\circ}C$ were stabilized. Post annealing reduced the film stress from 4.9 GPa to 3.4 GPa, but no considerable stress release in the c-BN phase was observed, contrary to previous reports that the stress relaxation in the c-BN phase is the main mechanism for the stabilization. Structural and chemical relaxation of non c-BN phase is supposed to be responsible for the film stress reduction and, in turn, stabilization, especially when the c-Bn content of the film is not high.

Facilitated transport is one of the possible solutions to simultaneously improve permeability and selectivity, which is challenging in conventional polymer-based membranes. Olefin/paraffin separation using facilitated transport membrane has received much attention as an alternative solution to the conventional distillation process. Herein, we report olefin separation composite membranes based on the polymer blends containing $AgBF_4/Al(NO_3)_3$ mixed salts. Free radical polymerization process was used to synthesize an amphiphilic graft copolymer of poly(dimethyl siloxane)-graft- poly(ethylene glycol) methyl ether methacrylate (PDMS-g-POEM). In addition, poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) was introduced to the PDMS-g-POEM graft copolymer to form polymer blends with various ratios. The propylene/propane mixed-gas selectivity and permeance reached up to 5.6 and 10.05 GPU, respectively, when the PEO loading was 70 wt% in polymer blend. The improvement of olefin separation performance was attributed to the olefin facilitating silver ions as well as the highly permeable blend matrix. The stabilization of silver ions in the composite membrane was achieved through the introduction of $Al(NO_3)_3$ which suppressed the reduction of silver ions to silver particles.
