  • This study presents experiments to visualize the internal flow and heat transfer characteristics of thermosyphon with immiscible of water-FC40 adopted as binary working fluid. Three different regimes depending on the amount of heat flux applied to the thermosyphon were observed: natural convection, pulse boiling, and continuous boiling. Boiling incipience took place in water, which has lower vapor pressure than FC40. During natural convection water was vaporized in liquid pool while liquid film flows were formed. On the other hand, meanwhile bubbles were generated in the liquid pool during pulse and continuous boiling, the binary working fluid of water-FC40 was observed as the mixture throughout a whole range of the thermosyphon.

  • Large Eddy Simulation (LES) of turbulent premixed combustion flow is performed by using the dynamic subgrid scale model based on -equation describing the flame front propagation. After introducing the LES governing equations with dynamic subgrid scale (DSGS) model newly introduced into the -equation, the turbulent premixed combustion flow over backward facing step is analyzed to validate present formulation. The calculated results can predict the velocity and temperature of the combustion flow in good agreement with the experiment data.

  • A multi-step quasi-global mechanism is developed for the kerosene/oxygen combustion analysis including dissociation products. Reaction constants of the global reaction are determined to have agreement with experimental data. The mechanism is used for the numerical analysis of the combustion flow field of the kerosene/oxygen shear coaxial injector. The results from high-resolution numerical analysis confirmed qualitatively that the recess enhance the fuel/air mixing and combustion efficiency by the increased flow instabilities.

  • In this study, the effect of velocity ratio and particle size on the flow mixing characteristics in the secondary combustor was investigated. Both PIV(Particle Image Velocimetry) technique and LES(Large Eddy Simulation) were applied. Two sizes of Polystyrene PIV seeding particle of 5 and $50{\mu}m$, and three velocity ratios of 5, 3, and 1.5 were considered. Results showed that the mixing of two air streams created reattachment and recirculation regions. The size of the recirculation region was decreased as the velocity ratio increased. For the larger particle cases, due to the increased momentum by the larger particles, the size of the recirculating regions were larger than that of the smaller particle cases and the effect of the velocity ratio was not as significant as in the smaller particle case.

  • Large Eddy Simulation has been conducted to investigate both stable and unstable flame structures in a swirl turbulent combustor. While a flame is stabilized with periodic dynamic structure at 600K, a slight increase in the flame temperature of inlet mixture, 660K, lead to bifurcation of flame at swirl angle 45 degrees. It was observed that both swirl number and mixture temperature affect a flame bifurcation and the former is a major parameter. One major mechanism contributing to the unstable flame is that the local flame speed overshadows the local flow velocity near the wall of the combustor.

  • An analytical study has been performed to investigate the unsteady ignition characteristics of pulse combustion. In many combustion applications, strain rate of the flow can significantly affect the combustion features; ignition, extinction, and reignition. In the pulse combustion, two jets (hot combustion gases and fresh mixtures) coming from the opposite side of the combustor will collide in the combustor forming a stagnation region where the chemical reaction is suppressed by the strain rate until this becomes below the critical value. In this research, the method of large activation energy asymptotic is adopted with one step irreversible kinetics to examine the ignition response to the periodic variation of the strain rate of flow. The results show the variation of the maximum value of strain rate can determine whether the ignition or extinction occur.

  • The swirl flow applied for high efficiency and reduction of emission such as NOx, CO in a gas turbine engine makes recirculation zone by shear layer in the combustion chamber. This recirculation zone influences a decreasing flame temperature and flame length by burned gas recirculation. Also it is able to suppress from instability in lean-premixed flame. In this study, it was found that the swirl flow field was characterized as function of swirl number using PIV measurement in dump combustor. As increasing swirl number, a change of flow field was presented and recirculation zone was shifted in the nozzle exit direction. Also turbulent intensity and turbulent length scale in combustor were decreased in combustion. It has shown reduction of eddies scale with swirl number increasing.

  • LES analysis was conducted with in-house CFD code to investigate the turbulence evolution and interaction due to turbulence ring and splash plate in the gas generator. The calculation results show that the installation of turbulence ring can introduce additional turbulences and significantly improve turbulent mixing in the downstream flow. However, the addition of splash plate in the downstream of TR(Turbulence Ring) brings totally different shape of perturbation energy and enstrophy distribution into turbulent mixing. This enhancement can be done by the formation of the intensively strong vorticity and mixing behind the plate. Pressure drop was found to be a reasonable level of about 1% or less of initial pressure in all calculation cases. Also, calculation results revealed that the variation of shape and intrusion length of TR did not greatly affect the characteristics of turbulent mixing in the chamber. Even though the effect of installation location of splash plate on the turbulent mixing was not investigated yet, calculation results conclude the addition of splash plate leads to the increase in turbulent mixing with an acceptable pressure drop.
