TCP-RLDM : Receiver-oriented Congestion Control by Differentiation for Congestion and Wireless Losses (TCP-RLDM: Congestion losses과 Wireless losses 구별을 통한 수신측 기반 혼잡제어 방안)

  • This paper aims to adjust the window size according to the network condition that the sender determines by making the receiver participating in the congestion levels. TCP-RLDM has the measurement-based transmission strategy based on the data-receiving rate complementing TCP with the property of Additive Increase / Multiplicative Decrease. The protocol can make an performance improvement by responding differently according to the property of errors-whether congestion losses or transient transmission errors - to confront dynamically in heterogeneous environments with wired or wireless networks and delay-sensitive or -tolerant applications. By collecting data-receiving rate and the cause of errors from the receiver and by enabling sender to use the congestion avoidance strategy before occuring congestion possibly, the protocol works well at variable network environments.

  • 패킷 재배치(packet reodering)는 전송한 패킷의 순서가 처음과 다르게 뒤섞여 수신지에 도착하는 현상을 의미한다. 패킷 재배치는 불필요한 재전송이나 불필요한 혼잡 제어를 수행하여 TCP의 성능을 저하시킨다. 패킷 재배치에 의한 TCP 성능 저하를 막기 위해 다양한 접근 방법이 소개되었다. TCP-DAD는 기존 TCP에서 3으로 고정된 중복 응답 임계값을 동적으로 조절하여, 잘못된 혼잡 제어를 예방하고 있다. 일반적으로 전송한 패킷의 수가 많을 때, 패킷 재배치를 경험할 확률이 높으며, 패킷 재배치에 의해 잘못된 혼잡 제어가 일어날 가능성 많다. 고속 네트워크 환경에서는 혼잡 윈도우 크기 변화의 폭이 매우 크다는 점을 고려할 때, 중복 응답 임계값을 조절하는 TCP-DAD는 한계가 있다. 본 논문에서는 고속 네트워크 환경에서의 패킷 재배치 현상으로 인한 TCP 성능저하를 완화하기 위한 새로운 알고리즘 TCP-DT를 소개한다. 이는 중복 응답 수에 의존하지 않고 타이머를 통해 혼잡 제어를 수행하는 메커니즘 이다. 본 논문은 NS-2를 사용하여 고속 네트워크 환경에서의 시뮬레이션을 통해 제안한 TCP-DT의 성능 향상을 증명하였다.

Design of MPTCP Congestion Control based on BW measurement for Wireless Networks (무선 환경에서 MPTCP 성능 개선을 위한 대역폭 측정 기반 혼잡 제어 설계)

  • In wireless networks, the packet loss due to the bit error is misinterpreted as loss due to the congestion state, so TCP congestion control occurs frequently and performance degradation occurs. This degradation also occurs in MPTCP(Multipath TCP), which is an extension protocol of original TCP. In MPTCP, the overall performance of the multipath is degraded. In this paper, we propose a congestion control scheme which measures the bandwidth on each path of MPTCP and reduces the congestion window size by the measured bandwidth when packet loss occurs, in order to solve the MPTCP performance degradation in the wireless environment. We also implemented the proposed congestion control in the Linux kernel and compared it with the original MPTCP in the testbed and real wireless networks. Experimental results show that the proposed congestion control has better throughput performance than original MPTCP congestion control in the wireless environment.

TCP Vegas RTT Ambiguity Problem and Its Solutions (TCP Vegas RTT Ambiguity 문제와 그 해결)

  • TCP 구현의 하나인 Vegas는 RTT 측정값을 바탕으로 혼잡을 인지하며 윈도우 크기 등 혼잡제어를 위한 주요 인자를 결정한다. 이러한 Vegas가 기존 TCP 구현에 비해 우수한 성능과 높은 공평성을 가짐은 여러 논문을 통해 보고되었다. 그런데 우리는 Vegas의 혼잡회피 방안이 TCP 데이터 흐름의 비대칭적 특성을 제대로 반영하지 못하며, 이것이 양쪽 방향 상태를 반영하는 RTT 측정값을 순방향 링크의 상태 해석에 이용하기 때문임을 발견하였다. 우리는 이를 Vegas RTT Ambiguity 문제라 하고, 네트워크 내의 패킷 스케쥴링 방법인 Small Get Priority Queue, TCP Timestamp Options을 이용한 수정 Vegas 구현 등 두 가지 해결 방안을 제시하였다. 우리는 시뮬레이션을 통해 Vegas RTT Ambiguity 문제와 제시한 해결 방안들을 검증하였다.

  • 최근 UDP를 이용한 실시간 어플리케이션이 증가하고 있지만, 대부분 혼잡제어를 사용하지 않고 있다. 이러한 문제를 해결하기 위하여 IETF에서는 UDP를 대신하면서 실시간 트래픽 전송을 위하여 혼잡제어 메커니즘을 포함한 DCCP(Datagram Congestion Control Protocol)를 제안하였다. DCCP는 윈도우 기반 흐름제어를 사용하여 실시간 트래픽을 지원하기 위하여 제안된 차세대 전송 프로토콜이다. 본 논문에서는 DCCP의 기본 개념과 혼잡제어 기법을 소개하고, 유선과 무선에서 다양한 전송 프로토콜을 이용하여 DCCP의 성능평가를 한다. DCCP를 기반으로 유선과 무선 네트워크 환경에서 시뮬레이션 성능분석을 위해 Network Simulator 2(NS-2)를 이용한다.

An Efficient TCP Congestion Control Scheme in ATM Networks (ATM 망에서 효율적인 TCP 폭주 제어 기법)

  • In this paper, we proposed an enhanced TCP congestion control algorithm using RTT with congestion window parameter cwnd to minimize the effect of TCP congestion. The proposed scheme could avoid the occurrence of frequent congestion and decrease the delay caused by the recovery time and the using amount of switch buffer. Through the simulation, we showed that the proposed scheme cm acquire higher performance than the existing scheme. There are 22.56% improvement at the average using buffer efficiency, and packet drop rate is 0.1% which is less than existing scheme.

  • TCP assumes that packet loss is always happened by congestionlike wired networks because is can not distinguish between congestion loss and transmission error loss,. This assumption results in unnecessary TCP performance degradation in wireless networks by reducing sender's congestion window size and retransmitting the lost packets. Also, repeated retransmissions loed to waste the limited battery power of mobile devices. In this paper, we propose the new congestion control scheme that add the algorithms monitoring networks states and the algorithms preventing congestion to improve TCP throughput performance and energy efficiency in wireless ad-hoc networks. Using NS2, we showd our scheme improved throughput performance and energy efficiency.

Energy Efficient Congestion Control Scheme in Ad-hoc Networks (Ad-hoc 통신망의 에너지 효율적인 혼잡 제어 기법)

  • In recent years, there have been many researches about Ad-hoc Networks which is available to communicate freely between mobile devices by using multi-hop without any support of relay base or access point. TCP that used the most widely transport protocol in the Internet repeats packet loss and retransmission because it increases congestion window size by using reactive congestion control until packet loss occurs. As a result of this, energy of mobile device is wasted unnecessarily. In this paper, we propose TCP-New Veno in order to improve the energy efficiency of mobile device. According to the state of network, the scheme adjusts appropriate size of congestion window. Therefore, the energy efficiency of mobile device and utilization of bandwidth are improved by the scheme. From the simulation by using ns-2, we could see more improved energy efficiency with TCP-New Veno than those with TCP in Ad-hoc Networks.

  • TCP Vegas version provides better performance and more stable services than TCP Tahoe and Reno versions, which are widely used in the current Internet. However, in the situation where TCP Vegas and Reno share the bottleneck link, the performance of TCP Vegas is much smaller than that of TCP Reno. This unfairness is due to the difference of congestion control mechanisms of each TCP use. Several studies have been executed in order to solve this unfairness problem. In this paper, we analyze the minimum window size to maintain the maximum TCP performance of link bandwidth. In addition, we propose an algorithm which maintains the TCP performance and improves fairness by selective packet drops in order to allocate proper window size of each TCP connections. To evaluate the performance of the proposed algorithm, we have measured the number of data bytes transmitted between end-to-end systems by each TCP connections. The simulation results show that the proposed algorithm maintains the maximum TCP performance and improves the fairness.

Modified RTT Estimation Scheme for Improving Throughput of Delay-based TCP in Wireless Networks (무선 환경에서 지연기반 TCP의 성능 향상을 위한 수정된 RTT 측정 기법)

  • In a wireless network, TCP causes the performance degradation because of mistaking packet loss, which is caused by characteristics of wireless link and throughput oscillation due to change of devices connected on a limited bandwidth. Delay based TCP is not affected by packet loss because it controls window size by using the RTT. Therefore, it can solve the problem of unnecessary degradation of the rate caused by misunderstanding reason of packet loss. In this paper, we propose an algorithm for improving the remaining problems by using delay based TCP. The proposed scheme can change throughput adaptively by adding the RTT, which rapidly reflects the network conditions to BaseRTT. It changes the weight of RTT and the increases and decreases window size based on the remaining amount of the buffer. The simulation indicated that proposed scheme can alleviate the throughput oscillation problem, as compared to the legacy TCP Vegas.
