Objectives: This case report intended to examine how herbal medicine treatment for breathingrelated sleep disorders applied with polysomnography affected the structure of sleep. Methods: From January to November 2019, we retrospectively reviewed the progress records and polysomnography reports of patients who visited Korean medical hospitals in Daejeon and Cheonan. Results: In case 1, the patient complained of daytime sleepiness and snoring and was diagnosed with obstructive sleep apnea disorder and treated with Ukgan-san-gami. There were significant changes in the polysomnographic parameters, such as sleep efficiency, waking after sleep onset, sleep latency, the total arousal index, and the apnea-hypopnea index after herbal treatment. In case 2, the patient complained of frequent waking after sleep onset, daytime sleepiness, and snoring, and was diagnosed with obstructive sleep apnea disorder and treated with Yeoldahanso-tang-gami. There were significant changes in the polysomnographic parameters, such as the total arousal index and the apnea-hypopnea index after herbal treatment. In case 3, the patient complained of daytime sleepiness and was diagnosed with obstructive sleep apnea disorder and treated with Bangpungtongsung-san. There was no significant change in the polysomnographic parameters after herbal treatment. Conclusions: It is meaningful to note that objectively identifying the outcome of treatment for breathing-related sleep disorders is necessary in the clinical practice of Korean medicine.

Purpose : This study was conducted to investigate the effect of positive active pressure technique and active breathing technique on lung function in healthy adults. Methods : In this study, the passive lung expansion technique and active respiration enhancement technique using an air mask bag unit were conducted in 30 normal adults to observe changes in pulmonary function with forced vital capacity (FVC), Forced expiratory volume at one second (FEV1). In order to observe the change in the level of respiratory function, we would like to investigate the peak expiratory flow (PEF) and the forced expiratory flow (FEF 25-75 %). Results : As a result of this study, there was no significant difference in comparison between the passive lung expansion technique and the active breathing enhancement technique (p>.05). The passive lung expansion technique effectively increased the effortful expiratory volume and the median expiratory flow rate of 1 second (p<.05). And the passive lung expansion technique effectively increased the effortless lung capacity and the maximum expiration flow rate (p<.05). Conclusion : The passive lung expansion technique effectively increases the range of motion of the lungs and chest cages, intrathoracic pressure, and elasticity of the lungs, and the active breathing technique increases the muscle functions such as the diaphragm and the biceps muscles. It is expected that it will be able to selectively improve the respiratory function of patients with respiratory diseases or functional limitations as it is found to be effective.
Respiratory viruses (RVs) cause infections in hospital environments through direct contact with infected visitors. In infection control, it causes major problems of acquired infections in hospitals by respiratory viruses. The surveillance data derived from clinical laboratories are often used to properly allocate medical resources to hospitals and communities for treatment, consumables, and diagnostic product purchases in the institutions and public health sectors that provide health care. An early diagnosis is essential in infection with respiratory viruses, and methods that can be used in diagnostic methods using respiratory samples include virus culture, molecular diagnosis, and analysis. A microchip provides a new strategy for developing a more diverse and powerful technology called point-of-care testing. The importance of the respiratory system should be applied strictly to the infection control guidelines to ensure the occupational health and safety of health care workers. Evidence of clinical efficacy, including this study, is challenging the long-standing paradigm for infection propagation. Additional assistance will be needed for frequent tests to detect respiratory viruses in inpatients who have begun to show new respiratory symptoms indicating infections requiring efforts to control the infection.

PURPOSE: This study examined the changes in the respiratory function when PNF chopping and lifting patterns were used in chronic stroke patients METHOD: The subjects were 30 patients diagnosed with chronic stroke. The respiratory function (FVC, FEV1, and FEV1/FVC) were measured by spirometry. Thirty subjects were divided randomly into an experimental group to which 15 PNF chopping and lifting were applied and a control group to which chest breathing exercise was performed. The intervention was conducted three times a week for six 6 weeks. To examine the effects of intervention, the pre- and post-intervention values for each group were compared using a paired t-test. An independent t-test was used to compare the differences in the values of changes pre- and post-intervention in the two groups. Statistical significance was set to .05. RESULTS: Satistically significant differences in FVC and FEV1 were observed in both the experimental group and control group according to the intervention (p < .05). A statistically significant difference was found in FVC and FEV1 compared to values of changes pre- and post-intervnetion between the experimental and control groups. There was no difference in FEV1/FVC. CONCLUSION: The results suggest that PNF chopping and lifting can be applied as an excellent respiratory intervention program compared to general chest breathing exercises to improve respiratory function in stroke patients.
A 75-year-old male patient without any significant medical and habitual risk factors for acute atherosclerosis obliterans except for hypertension was diagnosed with coronavirus disease 2019 with dyspnea, coughing, and mild fever. After a week of hospitalization, he complained of right foot pain and numbness. The symptoms were aggravated during the next week, resulting in a complete toe color change and loss of dorsalis artery pulse. Enhanced 3-dimensional computed tomography angiography revealed thrombus formation in the right common iliac artery and a loss of blood flow below the popliteal artery on both sides. The patient underwent percutaneous balloon angioplasty with stent insertion followed by medical therapy for anticoagulation. The clinical symptoms immediately were improved after the intervention, but the great toe necrosis was not recovered. Finally, amputation of the great toe was performed.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of trunk-stabilization training using stabilizing reversal and rhythmic stabilization techniques of PNF on trunk muscle strength and respiratory function in elderly stroke patients. Methods: There were 26 stroke patients included in the study. Patients were divided into two groups, and all patients performed exercise 30 min five times per week for six weeks. The experimental group performed trunk stability exercise using stabilizing reversal and rhythmic stabilization techniques of PNF, and the control group performed flexibility and strength training. Trunk muscle strength, forced vital capacity, maximum inspiratory pressure, and maximum expiration pressure were measured to determine the changes after the intervention. For statistical processing, a paired t-test was performed within the group, and the value after intervention was performed as an independent t-test to find out the difference between the two groups. Results: In the experimental group, all of the trunk muscle strength, forced vital capacity, maximum inspiratory pressure, and maximum expiration pressure showed significant differences according to the intervention. In the control group, there were statistically significant differences in trunk muscle strength and forced vital capacity, but the maximum inspiratory pressure and the maximum expiration pressure did not show any statistical change. Conclusion: From these results, it can be seen that the trunk stability exercises that use the proprioceptive neuromuscular promotion method of stable reversal and rhythm stabilization can be a good intervention for the respiratory function of stroke patients.
Objectives: The objective of this case report is to find a therapeutic effect of Gyeji-tang in panic disorder patients, based on Shanghanlun provision. Methods: At patient's first visit, we had conducted a medical interview in order to diagnose the physical and mental symptoms of the patient. A questionnaire called BAI had been also used to measure the degree of anxiety in panic disorder. After all the diagnoses had been done, the patient was allowed to take 120cc of Gyeji-tang, three times a day for 25 weeks. 25 weeks later, we conducted a second medical interview to compare with the initial treatment and to evaluate whether his physical and mental symptoms had been decreased or not. Likewise, the patient was asked to fill out the BAI questionnaire to measure the decline of anxiety degree. Results: Based on Shanghanlun provision, the patient with panic disorder due to overwork was diagnosed as Tai-yang-bing. Considering that the patient was having dyspnea, 15th provision of Gyeji-tang was selected and administered for 25 weeks. After 25 weeks, we could have observed that the main physical symptoms such as palpitation, dyspnea, stifling, headache, and fatigue were moderately improved. Moreover, the BAI score, which was evaluated to measaure the degree of anxiety, was also decreased from 49 points to the level of normal condition, 16 points. Conclusions: A 44 year old male patient who suffered from panic disorder due to overwork was allowed to take 15th provision Gyeji-tang for 25 weeks, based on Shanghanlun Provision. In results, the main physical symtpoms including dyspnea, palpitation, stifling, headache, and fatigue, and mental symptom such as extreme anxiety were all effectively improved.
This study was conducted to examine the effect of Broccoli Extract on the proliferation inhibition of human-derived cancer cells and the degree of inhibition. The three cell lines used in the experiment were respiratory system lung cancer cells A549, digestive system liver cancer cells SNU-182 and biliary tract cancer SNU-1196. All cancer cells were derived from the human body, and the CCK-8 method was used to measure the degree of inhibition of cancer cell proliferation. As a result of examining the effect on Broccoli Extract 10ug/mL, 100ug/mL, 1000ug/mL, Broccoli Extract inhibited proliferation in a concentration-dependent manner in most cancer cells, In particular, lung cancer cell A549 and liver cancer cell SNU-182 showed significant proliferation inhibition at 1000ug/mL.As a result, it can be seen that broccoli extract provides potential as a cancer preventive and therapeutic agent for tumor suppression mechanisms proven through cell experiments.

Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus-2 (SARS-CoV-2) mainly causes respiratory symptoms such as fever, cough, sputum, and rhinorrhea, as well as digestive symptoms such as diarrhea, vomiting, and abdominal pain in children. In this report, we describe a case of a child with a SARS-CoV-2 infection who presented with epigastric pain and was subsequently diagnosed with acute pancreatitis without any concomitant infections in other organs. The epigastric pain was relieved with goal-directed vigorous fluid therapy for acute pancreatitis for 24 hours, and the serological and radiological findings normalized after two months. Acute pancreatitis should be considered as a differential diagnosis when a child with a history of COVID-19 visits the hospital with epigastric pain.

Purpose : This study was performed to evaluate the effects of virtual reality combined robot assist gait training (VRG) on improvement of balance and respiratory function in chronic stroke patients. Methods : A single-blind, randomized controlled trial (RCT) was conducted with 35 chronic stroke patients. They were randomly allocated 2 groups; VRG group (n=18) and conservative treatment group (CG; n=17). The VRG group received 30 minutes robot assisted gait training combined virtual reality training, robot assisted gait training was conducted in parallel using a virtual reality device (2 sessions of 15 minutes in a 3D-recorded walking environment and 15 minutes in a downtown walking environment). In the conservative treatment group, neurodevelopmental therapy and exercise therapy were performed according to the function of stroke patients. Each group performed 30 minutes a day 3 times a week for 8 weeks. The primary outcome balance and respiratory function were measured by a balance measurement system (BioRescue, Marseille, France), Berg balance scale, functional reach test for balance, Spirometry (Cosmed Micro Quark, Cosmed, Italy) for respiratory function Forced vital capacity (FVC), forced expiratory volume in 1 second (FEV1), and maximum expiratory volume (PEF) were measured according to the protocol. The measurement were performed before and after the 8 weeks intervention period. Results : Both groups demonstrated significant improvement of outcome in balance and respiratory function during intervention period. VRG revealed significant differences in balance and respiratory function as compared to the CG groups (p<.05). Our results showed that VRG was more effective on balance and respiratory function in patients with chronic stroke. Conclusion : Our findings indicate that VRG can improve balance and respiratory function, highlight the benefits of VRG. This study will be able to be used as an intervention data for recovering balance and respiratory function in chronic stroke patients.
