본 실험은 한우육과 호주산 우육의 근단백질의 특성 및 열변성도를 비교하기 위하여 Rheometer를 이용한 물성 측정 및 DSC를 이용한 열변성도를 조사하였다. 그 결과를 요약하면 다음과 같다. 한우육 및 호주산 우육의 물성 측정에서는 한우육이 호주산 우육보다 물체에 가해진 변형 에너지를 저장하는 능력, 물체에 가해진 에너지가 소멸되는 능력이 뛰어난 것으로 나왔다. DSC측정에서는 한우육 및 호주산 우육 모두 주요한 세 개의 peak가 $63.5^{\circ}C$${\sim}$$97.6^{\circ}C$ 구간에서 나타났다. 한우등심이 호주등심보다 약간 낮은 온도에서 변성되기 시작하여 한우등심이 낮은 peak 온도로 변성되었다. 한우우둔과 호주우둔은 비슷한 온도에서 변성되기 시작하여 한우우둔이 높은 peak 온도로 변성되었다. 총 변성 엔탈피는 한우등심이 4.22J/g, 한우우둔이 6.26J/g, 호주등심이 4.64J/g, 호주우둔이 6.27J/g 이었다. 본 실험의 결과 한우육이 호주산 우육에 비하여 구조가 안정되어 변형도가 작고, 육조직이 탄력적인 것으로 나타났으며, 한우우둔의 경우 호주산 우육에 비하여 근단백질의 열변성도가 낮아서 열에 대한 안정성이 높다는 것을 알 수 있었다.

호주는 더 이상 세계 비료시장에서 경쟁력을 잃었다고 볼 수 없다. 왜냐하면, 호주는 지난 10년 동안에 요소와 DAP의 주요 수입국으로 분류될 수 없기 때문이다. 오히려, 자국의 자원을 이용하여 세계적 수준의 질소와 인산비료 산업을 개발하고 있다. 호주내의 새로운 생산 참여자 뿐만 아니라 호주의 오랜 기간 정착된 공급자들도 급격한 변화를 경험하고 있다.

호주는 한국인에게 무척 친숙한 나라이다. 깨끗한 자연환경에 대한 호감은 많은 관광객과 유학생들을 호주로 향하게 하고 있다. 하지만 호주의 비즈니스적인 면에 대해선 상대적으로 덜 알려져 있는 듯하다.

Burckhardt (1987) combined Aphalaridae and Spondyliaspididae into the Psyllidae, as there were no character sets which had clearly defined these three families. During the analysis on the character evolution of the psyllids from the world including Australia, there were a few different results for the taxonomy of the Spondyliaspidinae. 52 species and 28 genera in the Australian native psyllids were dissected to examine the taxonomic position of the subfamily Spondyliaspidinae. All of the dissected psyllids in the subfamily Spondyliaspidinae had one follicle in the male testes, but the subfamilies of the Psyllidae except Spondyliaspidinae were having two or more follicles. By the characteristics with living on the Eucalyptus host plants recently evolved, having just one follicle which clearly defined it from other families and experienced an explosive specific diversification in the Gondwana region, it is reasonable to separate the subfamily Spondyliaspidinae from the family Psyllidae with two or more follicles.

This study examined the effects of irrational beliefs, impulsivity and happiness on problem gambling of Korean and Australian college students. Data were collected from 581 college students of Korea, and 100 college students of Cairns of Australia. As a result, The overall mean of the CPGI was significantly different between Koreans and Australians (t=-29.828**). As for classification of gamblers by sub-type of CPGI, the number of problem gamblers in Australians was 7.0% compared to 5.3% for Koreans, showing a significant difference. In Multiple regression analyses, irrational beliefs, happiness, and the frequency of gambling significantly predicted problem gambling of Koreans (R2 = 0.175 F = 23.441, p < .001). On the other hands, irrational beliefs and the frequency of gambling significantly predicted problem gambling of Australians(R2 = 0.368, F = 10.844, p < .001). Through this study, it was found that the factors affecting the problem gamblers of Korean and Australian are different. It is required to continue further education on gambling among young adults of Korea and Australia.

필자는 1997년 9월 3일부터 11일까지 호주에 있는 접종균 스타터 연구센터(Australian Starter Culture Research Center)와 CSIRO(Commonwealth Scientific & Industrial Research Organization)연구소 및 New South Wales 대학을 방문하여, 현재 수행중인 "전통발효 식품의 미생물자원 발굴 및 보존연구"과제와 관련 호주에서 실시되고 있는 농어민에의 접종균 보급시스템을 조사 하였고, 발효식품에 대한 연구현황 조사를 한 후 호주 식음료 박람회(Fine Food'97) 참관하고 왔기에 수집된 자료들을 중심으로 간략하게 이들 연구소와 박람회를 소개하고자 한다.

호주는 오래전부터 쇠고기를 비롯한 다양한 축산물과 사슴, 산양 등의 동물을 우리나라에 수출하면서 국제무역거래상 밀접한 관계에 있다. 호주의 수출입 동물, 축산물에 대한 철저하고 강력한 검역정책은 많은 국가들의 표본이 되고 있다. 호주에서는 지금까지 1801년, 1804년, 1871년 등 총4건의 구제역이 발생한 적이 있으나, 그 후 현재까지 약 125년간 구제역 비발생상태를 유지해오고 있다. 그러나 호주에서는 구제역의 영구적인 유입차단과 구제역의 발생시에 과학적, 적극적, 능동적, 합리적으로 대처하기 위한 '구제역 관리 전략'을 구축하여 만약의 사태에 대비하고 있다. 이에 필자들은 호주의 Australian Veterinary Emergency Plan(Ausvetplan, 1996) 중에서 구제역을 소개함으로써 구제역의 국내유입 차단을 위한 검역 및 방역대책에 조금이나마 도움이 되고자 한다.
