  • The objective of our study was to predict future cultivation areas for walnut trees (Juglans sinensis), using the cultivation suitability map provided from Korea Forest Service and MaxEnt modelling under future climate conditions. The climate conditions in 2050s and 2070s were computed using the Regional Climate Prediction (RCP) 4.5 and 8.5 scenarios with the HadGEM2-AO model. As a result, compared to the present area, the cultivation area of the western Korea including Chungcheongnamdo, Jeollabuk-do, Jeollanam-do decreased on a national scale under RCP 4.5, and those of Gyeongsangbukdo and part of Gyeongsangnam-do decreased under RCP 8.5. However, Gangwon-do which is located in higher altitude over 600 meters than other regions showed increases in cultivation areas of 18.3% under RCP 4.5 and of 56.6% under RCP 8.5 by 2070s. The predicted map showed large regional variations in the cultivation areas with climate change. From the analysis of current top ranking areas, the cultivation areas in Gimcheon-si and Yeongdong-gun dramatically decreased by 2070s under RCP 4.5 and 8.5; that of Gongju-si decreased more under RCP 4.5; and those of Muju-gun and Cheonan-si sustained the areas by 2070s under both scenarios. The results from this study can be helpful for providing a guide for minimizing the loss of walnut production and proactively improving productivity and quality of walnuts with regard to unavoidable climate change in South Korea.

  • Since joining the OECD Development Assistance committee in 2010, the Republic of Korea has been continuously striving to promote its international standing. A new era of cooperation is about to open between Korea and Central Asia, with the $25^{th}$ anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relationship between Korea and Central Asia, and the welcoming the $80^{th}$ anniversary of the Koryoin (Korean) immigration in 2017. Central Asia is also attracting attention with a rapidly growing economy based on the endowed resources. Therefore, Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan, among others, were investigated in the following statuses: politics, diplomacy, economy, official development assistance and national strategies. In particular, this study suggests the South Korea's Country Partnership Strategy for Forest with the nations by analyzing the forest environment and forest policy regime, and both forest cooperation strategies: 'Ecotourism Projects using a Walnut Forest' in Kyrgyzstan and 'Projects Restoring Forest and Securing Fuel Woods of Degraded Land in Tugai' in Tajikistan.

  • Parkinson's disease (PD), one of common neurodegenerative diseases, is caused by the death of dopaminergic neurons in the substantia nigra pars compacta. The loss of dopaminergic neurons in PD is associated with oxidative stress and mitochondrial dysfunction. Hyperoside (quercetin 3-O-${\beta}$-D-galactopyranoside) was reported to have protective properties against oxidative stress by reducing intracellular reactive oxygen species (ROS) and increasing antioxidant enzyme activity. In this study, we examined the neuroprotective effect of hyperoside against 1-methyl-4-phenyl pyridinium ($MPP^+$)-induced cell model of PD and the underlying molecular mechanisms. Hyperoside significantly decreased $MPP^+$-induced cell death, accompanied by a reduction in poly ADP-ribose polymerase (PARP) cleavage. Furthermore, it attenuated $MPP^+$-induced intracellular ROS and disruption of mitochondrial membrane potential (MMP), with the reduction of Bax/Bcl-2 ratio. Moreover, hyperoside significantly increased the phosphorylation of Akt, but it has no effects on $GSK3{\beta}$ and MAPKs. Pharmacological inhibitor of PI3K/Akt abolished the cytoprotective effects of hyperoside against $MPP^+$. Taken together, these results demonstrate that hyperoside significantly attenuates $MPP^+$-induced neurotoxicity through PI3K/Akt signaling pathways in SH-SY5Y cells. Our findings suggest that hyperoside might be one of the potential candidates for the treatment of PD.

  • This study investigates bench grafting (BG) and field grafting (FG) in walnut by comparing the graft take rate, grade ratio, and simple earning rate using a conventional method. The mean grafting-take rate of the BG was 30.3% while that of FG was 77.1%. The quality of grafted seedlings is classified as good, fair, and poor. The quality grade ratio of FG seedlings is 3:4:3 (good:fair:poor) while the grade ratio of BG seedlings is 2:3:5. Field grafting resulted in 20% more good and fair seedlings than the BG method. As a result of calculating the earning rate with the sales income versus the input cost, FG has 1.5 times higher earning rate than BG. In summary, FG could be an alternative to conventional epicotyl grafting because it produced high-quality seedlings and increased productivity due to its high graft-take rate and earning rate.

  • This study was carried out to produce the grafts of Juglans sinensis by juvenile grafting method which epicotyl of newly germinated seeds were used as stocks and juvenile fresh shoots were used as scion. The results obtained were as follows ; 1. When plastic tube installed covering up seed with soil up to 6cm height for diameter increment of epicotyl, the epicotyl can be grown up to thickness of 10mm. 2. When the soft fruit branches and the soft water sprout with the terminal bud 8cm to 12cm long were used as scions, the survival rates showed 90 Percent. 3. The optimum date for making juvenile grafts was around the 20th of May, and the survival rates of grafted seedlings showed 86 percent in average. 4. The grafted seedlings showed first sprouting the 15th of June, that is 25 days after making graft, and the sprouting rate was 72 percent. 5. The height-growth of grafted seedlings finished at the end of July, and diameter growth lasted into the end of October. 6. There was positive correlation between the height of grafted seedlings and the diameter at root collar. 7. In general, it takes two years to make plantable graft seedlings from hardwood scion and stock, but the juvenile graft seedlings can be easily obtained in a year and so it seems to be economic.
