Anaerobic Digestion Technologies of Food Waste in Korea (국내 음식물쓰레기의 혐기성소화 처리 기술)

  • 2004년말 현재 국내에서 발생되는 음식물쓰레기의 재활용량은 전체 발생량의 $87.7\%$인 10,015톤/일이며, 전체 재활용량의 $6.47\%$인 640톤/일 정도가 혐기성소화 방법에 의해 처리 및 자원화 되고 있다. 국내에서 적용되고 있는 음식물쓰레기 혐기성소화 기술의 대부분은 습식소화(Wet digestion) 공법이며, 처리 방법별로 2상 혐기성소화(Two-phase anaerobic digestion)와 하수슬러지 흑은 축산분뇨와 함께 혼합처리 하는 통합소화(Co-digestion) 공정으로 구분되고 있다. 음식물쓰레기의 자원화 방법에 있어 혐기성소화는 사료화, 퇴비화에 비하여 폐기물의 효과적인 감량화와 자원화 효과뿐만 아니라 유용 에너지원인 메탄가스의 회수가 가능하기에 최근에 주목을 받는 biotechnology중의 하나로 자리매김 하고 있으며, 또한 유기성폐기물의 자원순환형 관리 시스템 구현에 있어 적절한 대안으로 고려되고 있다.

  • 퇴비화는 유기물질이 분해되는 조건에 따라 호기성 퇴비화(Aerobic composting)와 혐기성 퇴비화(Anaerobic composting)로 대별된다. 음식물쓰레기 퇴비화 시설의 주요공정은 선별시설, 혼합 및 발효시설, 불순물제거장치, 숙성시설, 악취제거시설로 구성된다. 본 과제에서는 이와 같이 음식폐기물 처리공정 등에 널리 사용되는 퇴비화 공정에서 발생하는 악취를 제거하기 위한 연구를 진행하였다. 본 연구에서는 다양한 형태의 탈취 공정을 비교 검토하였으며, 세라믹 담체를 사용한 생물학적 처리에 초점을 맞추어 연구를 진행하였다. 이를 위하여 퇴비화 온도에 따른 유기물의 변화와 NaCl의 농도변화를 측정하여 퇴비화 진행에 따른 성분 변화를 예측하였다.

Study on maximization and demonstration of biogas production in an anaerobic digester using a microbial agent (미생물제재를 이용한 혐기성소화조 바이오가스 생산 극대화와 실증화에 관한 연구)

  • Recently, several studies have been conducted on biogas and organic compost production using food waste in an anaerobic digester. In this study, basic experiments were conducted to produce biogas and compost by fermenting food wastes with microbial agents. First, a microbial agent was developed by combining various microorganisms. Then, the amount of generated biogas was identified through a food waste batch experiment. Further, we could maximize and demonstrate biogas production in an anaerobic digester by examining biogas production and composting in a pilot plant.

Change of Heating Value of Cow Manure According to Pre-treatment (전처리 방법 적용에 의한 우분의 열량값 변화)

  • This study was carried out to evaluate the change of heating value of cow manure by applying pre-treatment process. Three types of treatment precess; Composting, Dry anaerobic digestion and Physical compression were applied as a pre-treatment method. Composting and anaerobic digestion of cow manure were cause of caloric value reduction of the cow manure. The heating value of cured compost was 5% lower than that of initial composting material. The heating value of dry anaerobic digestion residue was 25.7% lower than that of fresh cow manure. By physical compression of cow manure, heating value and VS/TS ratio (Volatile solids/Total solids ratio) of compressed cow manure were higher than that of fresh cow manure. On the other hand, heating value and VS/TS ratio of leachate generated by compression process were lower than those of fresh cow manure.

The Effect of waste Oyster Shell on Anaerobic Composting of Garbage (굴 패각이 음식쓰레기의 혐기성 퇴비화에 미치는 영향)

  • Waste oyster shell was used to study the applicability on anaerobic composting of garbage. Experiment was conducted with five anaerobic reactors. After garbage and compost for inoculation were mixed, waste oyster shell was added into mixed waste in mesophillic temperature for 60 days with 30%, 60% respectively. The amount of produced methane gas, gas composition, organic removal efficiency and pH were measured. Result showed that the amounts of produced gas were 0.62 l /g-VS in R-1, 0.63 l /g-VS in R-2, 0.16 l /g-VS in R-3, 0.75 l /g-VS in R-4, 0.21 l /g-VS in R-5 and the amounts of produced methane gas were 0.32 l /g-VS in R-1, 0.37 l /g-VS in R-2, 0.04 l /g-VS in R-3, 0.42 l /g-VS in R-4, 0.05 l /g-VS in R-5. Proportion of mathane gas which determines the efficiency of anaerobic composting was over 55%. pH were 6.0~8.0 in R-2 and R-4 which contained 30% of waste oyster shell and pH were increased over 8.5 in R-3 and R-5 which contained 60% of waste oyster shell. Since pH were so high and it had a negative effect on microbial growth, anaerobic reaction were not well operated in R-3 and R-5.

Efficiency of methane production from pig manure slurry using anaerobic digestor combined with compost filtration bed (퇴비단 여과상이 부착된 혐기소화조를 이용한 돈분뇨 슬러리 메탄생산 효율분석)

  • The characteristics of methane production from pig manure slurry was investigated using anaerobic digestor combined with compost filtration bed. In this study, raw pig manure slurry was digested in mesophilic rectangular digester (effective volume $250m^3$) for 25 days and anaerobic digestion wastewater was filtered through compost filtration bed, which is composed of double layer, sawdust and chaff. The characteristics of anaerobic digestion wastewater were BOD 1,800 mg/L, COD 3,500 mg/L, SS 11,800 mg/L, T-N 1,200 mg/L and T-P 350 mg/L. After the filtration process, the contents of BOD, COD, SS, T-N and T-P of the anaerobic digestion wastewater were reduced by 97%, 62%, 89%, 39% and 57%, respectively. The concentrations of N, $P_2O_5$, and $K_2O$ of the leachate were 1,024, 111 and 407 mg/L, respectively. However, there was no odor emitted from the leachate.

  • For a microbiological study of composting process, screening and assay method for biopolymer degrading enzymes and microorganisms were developed and for the study of the possibility of composting in anaerobic state, distribution of sulfate reducing bacteria which plays a final role in anaerobic degradation was investigated. Substrates used for the development of assay methods for biopolymer degradation are ${\beta}-glucan$, xylan, dextran, CMC(carboxy methly cellulose), casein, and collagen. These substrates were made insoluble by a cross-linking agent and linked with dye to make chromogenic substrates. ${\beta}-glucan$ and xylan substrates could substitute congo-red method for screening of polymer degrading microorganisms without damaging the colonies. Sulfate reducing bacteria contained in the sample sludge showed preference to lactic acid, propionic acid, butyric acid and formic acid and could use acetic acid and valeric acid.

Treatment of Organic Wastes and Reuse of Bio-energy from the Anaerobic Digestion - Thermophilic Oxic Precess (혐기성 소화-고온 호기법에 의한 유기성폐기물의 처리와 생성열의 재활용 검토)

  • Anaerobic Digestion - Thermophilic Oxic Process(ADTOP) has been known to be one way reducing and composting of organic wastes without draining or forming excess sludge. It could be completely performed by the evaporation of water using the bio-energy from the microbial degradation of organic. In the present study the complete treatment of Chinese restaurant wastes was conducted and utility of bio-energy produced from the ADTOP was estimated. Base on results, it could be concluded as follows; 1) chinese restaurant wastes could be completely treated using the TOP without draining or excess sludge. Maximum volumetric loading rate was determined as $55.0kg-garbage/m^3$. Input water was almostly evaporated and 90.5% of carboneous organic wastes was conversed to carbondioxide. 2)The optimum volumetric loading rate which is acceptable to maintain over $55^{\circ}C$ in the anaerobic digester was determined as $45kg-garbage/m^3{\cdot}d$. 3) The optimum HRT was at least over 10 days in order to maintain about $50^{\circ}C$ in the anaerobic digester using bio-energy produced from TOP. Therefore the utilization of bio-energy produced from TOP could be used in the process which had long HRT such as the anaerobic digestion. 4) The efficiency of anaerobic digester rate were over 90% by the ADTOP under the organic loading rate of $1.1kg-COD/m^3{\cdot}d$, 50kg-Chinese restaurant garbage and $250{\ell}/m^3{\cdot}min$ of the aeration rate.

Characteristics of Food Waste Leachate Derived from Feed Supplement- and Compost-Producing Facilities (사료화 및 퇴비화 공정 유래 음폐수의 성상 비교 연구)

  • This study was conducted to characterize food waste leachate (FWL) and to compare its characteristics according to generation source: feed supplement- and compost-producing facilities. FWL contained high levels of organic compounds such as carbohydrate, protein and lipid. The moisture content of FWL was among the range of conventional wet anaerobic digestion. FWL was acidic (pH of $4.0{\pm}0.3$) and showed high coefficients of variance for specific parameters: carbohydrate, protein, lipid, ethanol, acetic acid and propionic acid. FWL derived from feed supplement-producing facilities showed slightly lower concentrations of most parameters than FWL derived from compost-producers. However, the difference was not significant at 5% significance level according to analysis of variance.
