The simultaneous biodegradation between MTBE (Gasoline additives) and BTEX (Benzene, Toluene, Ethyl-benzene, o-Xylene, m-Xylene, p-Xylene) was achieved within a competitive inter-relationship, with not only electron accepters such as nitrate, sulfate, and iron(III) without oxygen, but also with electron donors such as MTBE and BTEX. Preexisting indigenous microorganisms from a domestic sample of gasoline contaminated soil was used for a lab-scale batch test. The result of the test showed that the biodegradation rate of MTBE decreased when there was co-existing MTBE and BTEX, compared to having just MTBE present. The growth of indigenous microorganisms was not affected in the case of the MTBE treatment, whereas the growth of the microorganisms was decreased in combined MTBE and BTEX sample. This may indicate that an inhibitor related to biodegradation when BTEX and MTBE are mixed will be found. This inhibitor may be found to retard the anaerobic conditions needed for efficient breakdown of these complex carbon chain molecules in-situ. Moreover, it is also possible that an unknown competitive reaction is being imposed on the interactions between MTBE and BTEX dependent on conditions, ratios of mixture, etc.

Anaerobic reductive dechlorination of tetrachloroethylene(PCE) to ethylene was investigated by performing laboratory experiments using semi-continuous flow two-in-series soil columns. The columns were packed with soils obtained from TCE-contaminated site in Korea. Site ground water containing lactate(as electron donor and/or carbon source) and PCE was pumped into the soil columns. During the first operation with a period of 50 days, injected mass ratio of lactate and PCE was 620:1 and incomplete reductive dechlorination of PCE to cis-DCE was observed in the columns. However, complete dechlorination of PCE to ethylene was observed when the mass ratio increased to 5,050:1 in the second operation, suggesting that the electron donor might be limited during the first operation period. During the degradation of cis-DCE to ethylene, the concentration of hydrogen was $22{\sim}29mM$. These positive results indicate that the TCE-contaminated groundwater investigated in this study could be remediated through biological anaerobic reductive dechlorination processes.
Anaerobic biodegradation of diesel with coexisting heavy metals (Pb) was monitored in batch mode. Two different groups of the indigenous bacteria from a site contaminated with diesel and lead were used in this research: the first group was composed of a single species and the second group was composed of several species. The effect of heavy metals on the microbial population was monitored and confirmed the biodegradation mechanism in each combined contaminant. Growth of the microorganisms in 21 days was observed Diesel > Diesel + Pb > Diesel + Cu > Diesel + Pb + Cu > Diesel + Cr > Diesel + Pb + Cr. Indigenous microorganisms showed the adaptation in the Pb contaminate. Interactive toxic effect using AMES test observed larger synergistic effect than antagonistic in Diesel + Cr and Diesel + Pb + Cr. Therefore, the main effects of diesel biodegradation in the present of heavy metals are likely to exist other factors as well as toxic of heavy metals. This is a necessary part of the future studies.

Digestion of primary sludge was conducted to evaluate the effects of reactor configuration using UAD, CUAD, TPAD, and semi-continuos CSTR. Highest VSS reduction and gas production were obtained in CUAD at all HRT. More efficient digestion was accomplished in upflow digesters compared to TPAD and CSTR. Higher thickening of solids in reactor and longer solids retention were main reasons for the enhanced digestion in CUAD and UAD. Performance based on the SRT of CUAD was nearly identical to that of UAD. However, those of TPAD and CSTR were lower than that of CUAD. Particulate and soluble organics in upflow reactors were well adsorbed due to secreted extracellular polymeric substances from the sludge granules. These might result in close proximity of microorganisms and substrates and enhanced hydrolysis. Additionally, diverse anaerobic microorganisms and neutral pH in upflow reactor could induce more activity of hydrolytic enzymes and sludge granules might offer lower thermodynamic energy state. While, excessive mixing in CSTR could break conglomerates of enzymes and substrates into fine particles, which resulted in lowered hydrolysis. Low pH level in acid fermenter of TPAD lowered hydrolysis of the particulate substrates.

This study was carried out to get the characteristics of anaerobic digestion for chemical/biological sludge produced from municipal sewage treatment plant for phosphorus. Anaerobic mesophilic batch tests showed that the ultimate biodegradability of waste activated sludge showed 31%, PACl sludge 24%, Alum sludge 26%, respectively. At the S/I 1.0, 75% of total biodegradable volatile solids (TBVS) of waste activated sludge was degraded with an initial rapid decay coefficient, k1 of $0.1129day^{-1}$ and 74% of TBVS of PACl sludge with k1 of $0.0998day^{-1}$, and 76% of TBVS of Alum sludge with k1 of $0.1091day^{-1}$ for 20 days. During the operation of SCFMRs, the 3 reactor (Control, PACl, Alum) pH maintained 6.7~7.0 and the reactor alkalinity maintained 1,800~ 2,200 mg/L as $CaCO_3$. The average biogas production rates of SCFMRs fed with PACl sludge and Alum sludge were 0.089 v/v-d and 0.091 v/v-d, respectively, which was 27~28% lower than that of the control (0.124 v/v-d) at an HRT (hydraulic retention times) of 20 days. And the methane content during the operation ranged 70~76% in 3 reactor. The average TVS removal efficiency of SCFMRs fed with PACl sludge and Alum sludge were 19.6% and 19.9%, respectively, at an HRT of 20 days, which showed 4% lower than that of the control (23.8%). The average BVS removal efficiency of SCFMRs fed with PACl sludge and Alum sludge were 25.8% and 26.9%, respectively, at an HRT of 20 days, which was 8~9% lower than that of the control (34.5%).

Spinach was minimally processed into the unseasoned side dish to be used for Korean food service industry, using the techniques of cook-chill and sous vide. Spinach was blanched at 10$0^{\circ}C$ for 6 minutes, vacuum-packaged in the unit of 500 g by plastic film of low gas permeability, pasteurized at 9$0^{\circ}C$ and then cooled rapidly at 3$^{\circ}C$. The chilled products were then stored at 3 and 1$0^{\circ}C$ with measurement in their quality. Six log cycle (6D) inactivation of Listeria monocytogenes and 13 log (13D) thermal destruction of Streptococcus faecalis were compared as two pasteurization conditions, which corresponded to heating for 22.8 and 30.0 minutes at 9$0^{\circ}C$, respectively. Milder heat processing based on 6D process of L monocytogenes gave better quality of color, texture, ascorbic acid and chlorophyll than the conditions of 13D process of S. faecalis. Any microbial growth in total aerobic, psychrophilic and anaerobic bacteria was not observed until 8 days at 1$0^{\circ}C$ and 14 days at 3$^{\circ}C$, which might be regarded as strict guidelines of shelf life. Storage times based on the changes in physical and chemical quality were longer than those based on strict microbial quality in case of the products pasteurized by 6D process of L. monocytogenes. The seasoned vegetables prepared from sous vide processed spinach were found to be inferior in sensory quality to those from freshly blanched one.

Ethanol production from raw starch was performed using the co-immobilized culture system of Rhizopu japonicus and zymomonas mobilis(R-Z). Glucose Production in immobilized R. japonicus culture was 2-fold higher than that in free cell culture. Ethanol production was 1.67g/L(Yp/s, 0.094) and 6.549/L(Yp/s, 0.38) in R-Z and R-Z 24 culture system, respectively. R-Z system was modified and designated as R-Z 24 system by replacing cotton plug with silicon check valve after 24h fermentation with R-Z system. Optimal substrate concentration for ethanol production in batch culture was 5%(w/v) and ethanol concentration produced was 15.02g/L(Yp/s, 0.36). Ethanol yield(Yp/s, 0.38) in fed-batch culture of 5 times with 2%(w/v) substrate was equal to that in batch culture of 2%(w/v) substrate.
It was investigated whether an electrode could serve as an electron donor for biological reductive dechlorination of chlorinated phenols in the bio-electrochemical process. There was no dechlorination in the absence of current and scanning electron microscope image showed that the electrode surface was covered with microorganisms. As a result, the electrode attached cells was responsible for reductive dechlorination. Also, initial high chlorinated phenol concentration such as $437mg/{\ell}$ was rapidly reduced within 5 hours. The maximum dechlorination rate using Monod equation was $5.95mg{\ell}$-h($cm^2$ (electrode surface area)) in the bio-electrochemical reactor.
In the sheep and cattle's rumen, facultative anaerobic cellulolytic bacteria were isolated by using Hungate's roll tube technique. In the 21 isolated species, one was screened by its strong cellulolytic activity and identified as Cellulomonas fimi C-14 by investigate morphological, cultural, physiological characteristics and electron microgram. Optimum conditions of the cell growth and enzyme production were pH 6.5 an $30^{\circ}C$, Thiamine and biotin support a good growth of C. fimi C-14. In the enzyme activities, Crystalline cellulose hydrolyzing activity, CMCase activity and ${\beta}-glucosidase$ activity were 20.6, 226.6 and 0.56$(unit{\times}10^3/ml)$ at pH 6.0, $40^{\circ}C$. By addition of fungal cellulase, enzyme activity was increased. Simultaneous Saccharification Fermentation is better than two step fermentation in ethanol yield with Saccharomyces cerevisiae DY2.
