  • In Korea, standard N application level was amended from 110 to 90kg per ha for high quality rice production in 2005. So far, N application method, however, has not been considered for yield and quality based on changed standard N application level. Therefore, this experiment was conducted to find out more efficient N application method for improving rice quality or labor saving under the amended standard N application level with several varieties at three site (Suwon, Iksan, and Milyang) for two years from 2005 to 2006. Top dressing of N at 15 days before heading compared to the standard (25 days before heading) showed improved rice qualities such as 1000 grain weight and head rice ratio without changing rice yield and protein content of brown rice. In addition, there were no significant differences in yield and quality between different N split application of 70-0-30% and 50-30-20%, indicating that the former would be useful for labor saving without yield decrease and quality deterioration.

  • This experiment was carried out to investigate the effects of N levels (0,10,20,30kg/10a) and N split rates [the rates of basal+top dressing 15 days after transplanting (DAT) : top dressing 25 days before heading (DBH) was 100 : 0, 80 : 20, 60 : 40 ] on the growth, yield, yield components, and N uptake of Seomjinbyeo (J) and Samgangbyeo (I${\times}$J). The maximum tillering stage occurred in the middle of July in both varieties, but Samgangbyeo showed the second maximum tillering stage in the middle of August probably due to the retarded early growth caused by low temperature in the tillering stage and to favoring temperature in August. Grain yield of Seomjinbyeo was similar among the N levels from 10 to 30 kg/10a without occurrence of rice blast and lodging, but that of Samgangbyeo increased as N level increased upto 30 kg/10a. Grain yield of Seomjinbyeo was higher when N was applied three times (basal and two top dressings 15 DAT and 25 DBH) compared with two times (basal and top dressing 15 DAT), but that of Samgangbyeo was not different among the N split rates. Total N uptake and the proportion of fertilizer N to the total N uptake increased as N level was higher. N uptake tended to be higher as proportion of basal+top dressing 15 DAT increased in early growth stage, but it was higher as proportion of N applied 25 DBH increased in the late growth stage. The N efficiency to produce grain per absorbed N unit decreased as N level decreased in Seomjinbyeo, but similar in Samgangbyeo.

  • To observe the effect of fused phosphate fertilization, as a soil improvement material, in low productive paddy field which has rapid permeable sandy-skeletal texture, this experiment was carried out under five different levels of fused phosphate. The results obtained are briefly as follows: 1. Rice, grown in areas receiving annual fused phosphate application of from 200 to 250kg per 10a showed yield increases of about 10 to 27 percent based on 1, 000 grain weight of brown rice. Other favorable effects from high fused phosphate applications include increased number of panicles, faster ripening rate of the rice, and lower infection rate of blast. 2. In the soil analysis after the experiment, the useful soil chemical properties, such as available phosphate, silica, soil pH, exchangeable calcium, magnesium, and base saturation were increased significantly. The exchangeable potassium, however, was not changed noticeably. 3. The relation between the major soil chemical properties, especially available phophate and silica, and yield component which directly effect yields, showed a significant correlation statistically.

  • This study was conducted to evaluate the growth characteristics and grain component of 10 collected colored rice cultivars to find out the possibilities of using the agronomically usefull characters to provide information for colored rice breeding and cultivation. The coefficients of variation of culm length, grains number, ripening rate, maturity time, and coat color of grain and seed were higher than those of other characters. The positive correlations were observed among heading dates, grain numbers per panicle, and 1000 grain weight, as well as between culm length and panicle length, panicle length and grain numbers per panicle, 1000 grain weight and darkness of seed coat color, while negative correlations were observed between heading dates and panicle numbers per hill, grain yield and seed coat color as well as among culm length, length, number per hill and seed coat color of brown rice, respectively. The first component of principal component analysis was consist of panicle numbers per hill, 1000 grain weight, and grain yield showing higher correlations among them which explained the variance of the sink size of respective cultivars. The second component of principal component analysis was consist of heading date, grain numbers per panicle and maturing date showing higher correlations among them which explained the variance of maturity of respective cultivars.

  • 6 years data on the plant growth and grain yield of 13 rice varieties were investigated to define the relations between meteological conditions and plant growth of rice including grain yield. The results obtained are summarized as follows; 1. Variation of average temperature by years showed great number at early and middle July, middle August and early November, however smallest figure at late June and late July. And that of sunshine hours by years were least at late June and late July, and largest at middle July. 2. Among rice yield components variation of panicle number per hill by years was biggest and that of 1000 grain weight least. Rate of variation of plant growth and rice yield was different by rice varieties. 3. Direct effects on rice yield was greatest at maturing ratio and next at 1000 grain weight. The effects of yield factor on the rice yield wers different by years. 4. Higher temperature and longer sunshine delayed the miaxmum tillering stage but shortened the days from seeding to heading. 5. A significant negative correlation was recognized between the number of panicles per hill and average temperature of 11 to 40 days after transplanting, and number of grains per panicle was correlated with the average temperature of 11 to 70 days after transplanting. High temperature before heading time showed atime decreased maturing ratio. 6. Accumulated temperature was highly correlated with 1000 grain weight in all season. Highest positive correltaion was recognized between grain yield of rice and average temperature of 61 to 70 days after transplanting but correlations between rice yield and average temperature after heading stage were negative. 7. Highly significant correlations were confirmed between maturing ratio and sunshine hours of 31 to 50 days as well as 61 to 70 days after transplanting, and maturing ratio was highly correlated with accumulated hours of sunshine. Correlation between rice yield and hours of sunshine was significant at 51 to 60 days after transplanting.

  • This experiment was carried out to clarify the effect of various transplanting dates and agroclimatic zones on quality of brown rice and yield of a pigmented rice variety ‘Josaengheugchal’. The black density of brown rice in Jecheon (central inland region) showed a slight difference among the transplanting dates, but in Cheongwon (western sobaek inland region) that had increased at the transplanting dates of June 10th to 20th. cyanidin 3-glucoside (C3G) content at the same transplanting date in Jecheon was higher than Cheongwon, and the overall C3G content was increased at the later transplanting dates. The optimum transplanting date estimated by brown rice yields and C3G content was May 11th (491 kg/10a) in Jecheon and June 16th (468 kg/10a) in Cheongwon.

  • 'Nunkeunheugchal' is a waxy black rice variety that has a large embryo. The quality of black rice depends on the anthocyanin content of the rice seed coat, which is mainly determined by cultivation environment. Factors that affect the anthocyanin content include nitrogen level, planting density, transplanting date and harvesting date. This study was carried out to investigate the optimum black rice cultivation conditions by examining the effects of different nitrogen levels and planting densities. An initial study was conducted to determine the optimum nitrogen level in which four levels of nitrogen were applied to the field (0, 4, 8 and 12 kg/10a). As the nitrogen contents were increased up to 8 kg/10a, there was a concomitant increase in rice yields. However, nitrogen levels greater than 8 kg/10a, the yield was maintained at the same level. Correlation analysis indicated that the optimum nitrogen level for maximum yield was 9.6 kg/10a. In addition, anthocyanin levels showed a trend similar to that of yield, with correlation analysis indicating that the optimum nitrogen level for maximum anthocyanin content is 10.6 kg/10a.On the basis of these results, a second study was conducted to determine the optimum combination of planting density and nitrogen level. The planting densities investigated were $30{\times}12$, $30{\times}14$, $30{\times}16$ and nitrogen levels were 7, 9 and 12 kg/10a. A high planting density ($30{\times}12cm$) was shown to produce higher numbers of tillers and yield. As calculated in the first study, a nitrogen level of 9 kg/10a shown to produce the highest anthocyanin content and yield. Collectively, the results of this study indicate that a planting density of $30{\times}12cm$ and a nitrogen level of 9 kg/10a is the optimal combination in terms of maximizing both rice yield and anthocyanin content.

  • One of most laborious work in rice farming is transplanting of rice seedling which has been required preparation of nursury bed and care of seedling during one month period. In this research, direct seeding in dry paddy(DS) was practiced to compare with traditional tansplanting(TP) in Suwon and Milyang. Growth stages in DS were delayed as its planting time was about 36 days later than TP. Heading stage of DS at Suwon was delayed about 15 days as compared to transplanting culture. Rice yield in DS was decreased 8.2%(Suwon) and 0.11%(Milyang), repectively. Working-hour saving in DS was about 34.0%(Suwon) and 54.0%(Milyang). Production cost of DS was decreased 19%(Suwon) and 29% (Milyang), repectively. Amount of rice production per a unit working-hour in DS could incresed 37%(Suwon) and 113%(Milyang) compared to that of TP, respectively. Therefore, DS was decreased little in rice yield, but it could save working hour and production cost, significantly. Warm region like Milyang had more advantage in DS than Suwon. But, DS needs varietal selection for better emergence in low temperature, and more research in weed control and water management.

  • Experiments were conducted to know the effects of 15 years successive application of fertilizers and organic matters on the soil properties, plant growth and yield of rice. Application of fertilizers and organic matters for 15 years in same plots were increased soil pH, OM, and CEC, but decreased $SiO_2$ and Ca content in paddy soil. Organic matter application for 15 years was increased OM about 0.5% compare to non-applied plot. Particulary lime application was increased soil pH, $SiO_2$, Ca and CEC in paddy soil. NPK+compost and NPK+straw application were increased number of panicles and number of spikelets per unit area, but decreased ripening ratio compare to NPK applied plot. Average grain yield for 15 years in the non-fertilized, -N, -P, -K, NPK+compost, NPK+straw and NPK+lime applied plot was 47, 51, 88, 95, 113, 117, and 106% of yield conpare to NPK applied plot, respectively.
