  • The volcanic lavas in the Janggi area are plotted on basalt, basaltic andesite and andesite field (SiO$_2$; 48-61 wt.%) in the TAS diagram and belong to subalkaline series. Nineteen chenmical analyses of lavas show two distinct differentiation trends; tholeiitic and calc-alkaline. Calc-alkaline basaltic andesites composed of plagioclase and two-pyroxenes (cpx, opx) in their phenocrysts. Tholeiitics basaltic lavas can be classified into two sub-types. The one is porphyritic basalts composed of plagioclase, clinopyroxene and olivine phenocryst, and the other is aphyric basalt and more evolved lavas (aphyric basaltic andesite) with the same mineral phases. Incompatible elements and REE patterns show the enrichment of LILE and depletion of HFSE. This characteristics indicate that these lavas are evolved from the magmas related to subduction. Howeverm calc-alkaline basaltic andesite lavas show that slightly higher enrichment of LILE and the depletion of HFSE than those of tholeiitic basaltic lavas. On the tectonic discriminant diagram such as Ba/Th and La/Th ratios, calc-alkaline basaltic andesite lavas belong to orogenic medium to high-K suites, whereas tholeiitic basaltic lavas belong to medium-K suites and MORB. On the other diagram, such as La/Yb vs. Th/Yb, the volcanic lavas in the study area plotted in the field of oceanic arc basalt. Tholeiitic basaltic lavas are located in more prinitive environment than calc-alkaline andesitic lavas.

  • The basaltic rocks of Daljeon-ri columnar joint (Natural Monuments # 415) and Noeseongsan Noerok site (Natural Monuments # 547) were analysed in order to understand basalt types of two areas. The basaltic rocks of the Pohang Daljeon-ri columnar joint show a typical porphyritic texture containing phenocrysts (olivine and clinopyroxene) and groundmasses composed of clinopyroxene, plagioclase, and opaque minerals,. In contrast, basaltic rocks of Noeseongsan Noerok are characterized by fine-grained groundmass with large phenocrysts of plagioclase. Other analysis such as magnetic susceptibility, X-ray diffraction and X-ray fluorescence also support the petrological differences of two basalt rocks. The Daljeon-ri basaltic rocks are plotted on phonotephrite volcanic rocks of alkaline series in TAS(total alkali silica), and on within plate basalt in Zr-Ti diagram. The Noeseongsan basalts, on the other hand, are plotted on basaltic andesite to andesite of sub-alkaline series in TAS, and on volcanic arc basalt in Zr-Ti diagram. These results indicate that the original mantle materials between two basalt rocks were different each other, which probably originated from the change of a tectonic setting in the southeastern Korean peninsula during the Miocene.

  • Carbon Fiber Reinforced Plastic (CFRP) has strong and superb material properties, especially in mechanical and heat-resisting aspects, but the drawback is its high price. In this study, we made a hybrid composite using carbon fiber and basalt fiber, which is expected to attribute to its strong material properties and its financial benefits. We found out that the higher the content of basalt fiber included, the lower the intensity, and carbon's intensity contents of 80% showed the similar intensity level as that of CFRP. Besides it was possible to get a better mechanical properties using the composite that included the mixed fiber, instead of using a composition of separate fibers filed.

  • The effect of blending weight and fiber length on the tensile and flexural strength for Basalt fiber reinforce cement composites is discussed. The increase of physical properties is mainly affected by blending quantity of fibers instead of the fiber length. Also it is believed that the interfacial adhesion between Basalt fiber and cement matrix gives positive influence to the physical strength. Basalt fiber in saturated $Ca(OH)_2$ solution, which is similar to the alkaline hydration environment of cement, shows very low weight loss even after 3 weeks of immersion.

  • Because of the various excellent characteristics of cast basalt materials. such as, anti-corrosion, anti-wearing, good hardness. high chemical stability, of which steel may not possess, the steel-basalt composite pipes are used in severe environments for compensating the defects of steel. However. without sufficient mechanical investigation prior to application. the basalt liners in steel-basalt composite pipes may be cracked and broken or the basalt liners are omitted from steel pipes in applications. In these cases, the merits of basalt materials may disappear and the basalt liners may not play their good roles as expected. Therefore, it is required that mechanical behavior of steel-basalt composite pipes and surrounding environments be fully examined before installation. The limit of bending moment with which steel-basalt composite pipe may safely endure is calculated and the limit curvature of the composite pipe in the safe range is presented in this paper. The temperature distributions and the thermal stresses are also computed and the limit difference of temperatures between inner and outer side of composite pipe is given together.

  • This paper summarizes the processing inorganic continuous fibers from Korean minerals. Continuous filament fibers have been produced from two rocks, basalt and quartz diorite porphyry(QDP), by melting method. The essence of the method is that the vitrified materials was placed into the bushing, platinum/rhodium alloy crucible with a nozzle, and heated electrically to a temperature which allowed fiber spinning. Vitrified basalt without additive was suitable for producing continuous filament fiber. However doping quartz diorite porphyry with boric oxide yielded a material which could be pulled continuously.

  • The black fault gouge having 5-10 cm width occurs at the center of the fault fracture zone developed at the early Miocene basaltic rocks that is located at the Geumkwang-ri area in Donghae-myeon, Pohang city. The fault gouge was analyzed with XRD, FTIR, DTA/TGA, SEM, TEM, XRF, EPMA. Analyses reveal that the fault gouge is Fe-rich sepiolite having high iron content. Alteration minerals observed in the fault fracture zone are mainly smectite. The significant amount of smectite also observed in the basaltic parent rocks. The occurrence of constituent minerals indicates that the Fe-rich sepiolite was crystallized by faulting and hydrothermal alteration after the consolidation of basaltic rock at the deep place.

  • Volcanic rocks in Jeju Island indicate the differences in geological and mechanical characteristics from region to region, and have vesicular structure caused by various environmental factors. In this study, triaxial compressive strength tests were conducted for intact rocks sampled in northeastern onshore and offshore, southeastern offshore and northwestern offshore of Jeju Island. The estimated cohesion and internal friction angle from the results of triaxial compression tests were compared and analyzed with absorption, a parameter representing the vesicular properties of basalts in Jeju Island. As a result, it was found that the relationship between cohesion and absorption could be classified clearly, considering two different linear relationships in bulk specific gravity and absorption. As the absorption increases, the cohesion decreases exponentially. In addition, the internal friction angle decreases almost linearly with increasing in the absorption, regardless of the relationships in bulk specific gravity and absorption.

  • K-Ar ages have been determined for the submarine basalts dredged from the P2 and P3 segments of the Phoenix Ridge, Drake Passage, Antarctica, for better understanding on the extinction of seafloor spreading. At the P3 segment, the K-Ar ages of the rifted ridge basalts are 3.5-6.4 Ma, and those for the axial seamount basalts are 1.5-3.1 Ma. The K-Ar ages for the basalts at the rifted ridge and axial central high in the P2 segment are 2.1 and 1.4-1.9 Ma, respectively. We suggest that the extinction of seafloor spreading at the P3 and P2 segments occurred at 3.3 and 2.0 Ma, respectively, on the basis of ridge structure and formation time of basalts. This result favors a stepwise extinction model rather than a simultaneous one on the extinction of the Phoenix Ridge.

  • This study was carried out to investigate the manufacturability of artificial lightweight aggregate as a way to recycle basalt powder sludge, which is a waste produced during the manufacturing process of basalt in Jeju. Powdered waste glasses and calcium carbonate are used to improve the characteristics of manufactured artificial lightweight aggregate. Especially, considering the complex factors of basalt powder sludge, powdered waste glasses, and sintering method, the amount of calcium carbonate is appropriate at the 9 wt.% in order to improve the intumescent of lightweight aggregate. Also, the amount of powdered waste glasses is effective with using less than 50 wt.% and applying the direct sintering method at the same time on decreasing the absorption of lightweight aggregate. Furthermore, in order to manufacture artificial lightweight aggregate of high quality with a low specific gravity and low water absorption, it is considered to be more effective to apply the direct sintering method after the surface of artificial lightweight aggregate is covered with powdered waste glasses.
