This paper explores the patterns of technological innovation in Korean manufacturing sector in accordance with technology intensity which classifies industries into four sectors; high-technology, medium-high-technology, medium-low-technology and low-technology. Empirical study using Korea Innovation Survey(KIS 2008) data shows that the patterns of technological innovation in Korea exhibits the characteristics of science-based firm described by Pavitt across all industry sectors regardless of the level of technology. On the other hand, overseas studies have found the distinct differences between high-and low-technology sectors; the former is shaped by science-based firm and the latter by supplier-dominated firm. It implies that technological innovation activities in Korea do not reflect the level and/or nature of technology and innovation patterns conform to a single standard of high-technology sector. Further studies on causes and impacts of this inclination would be required for effective technology and innovation policy that fits with the level and/or nature of technology in individual industries.

Most firms have great interest in their innovations, but they have no interest in the patterns of innovation. In particular, firms using the benchmarking method have a tendency to use the same method, which is very dangerous for management. Analyzing the innovation pattern is more important than to benchmark the leading company, because of the differences in the situation of all companies, such as an environment, competition, market, etc. This paper used the Grew & Scott's model, in which each firm has a different innovation pattern for valuable management performance. This study aims to identify various service innovation patterns in the service industry and understand the main differences among them. We attempt to create a new typology of service innovation by analyzing its patterns based on the four major dimensions of service innovation (i.e., service concept, service delivery, customer interaction, and technology). We then investigate whether firms pursuing different service innovation patterns significantly differ from one another in terms of their performance (high and low performance). Based on empirical data collected from 198 Korean firms in the knowledge-intensive business service sector, four major clusters composed of different service innovation dimensions are identified. These four clusters can be interpreted as specific service innovation patterns, including "technology based high customer interaction," "high technology based high service delivery," "service delivery and high customer interaction-integrated," and "strongly balanced" innovators. High firm performance does not depend on the individual service innovation dimension but on the specific configurations of such service dimensions. Customer interaction also has an important role in achieving innovation success and improving firm performance, while technology has a key role in enhancing firm performance. This study sheds new light on service innovation research by developing a new typology of service innovation, identifying four major clusters as service innovation patterns, and exploring the relationship between service innovation patterns and firm performance.

전세계 풍력발전 시장은 2009년말 160GW로 지난 5년간 연평균 36.1%로 성장하였으며, 2012년 310GW, 2020년에는 1,900GW에 이를 전망이다. 특히, 풍력산업은 조선, 중공업 등 우리나라가 강세에 있는 산업과 연관성이 높아 관련분야 대기업을 중심으로 시장진출이 활발히 진행되고 있는 추세이다. 본 연구는 지식경제부에서 지원하고 있는 신재생에너지기술개발사업 R&D지원실적을 토대로 풍력산업 및 기술혁신패턴을 분석하고, 이를 토대로 풍력산업 발전을 위한 기술혁신 지원전략을 연구하였다. 분석결과, 풍력시장이 급성장함에 따라 대기업을 중심으로 급진적 혁신 행태을 보였으며, 기술도입 및 선진기술의 모방이라는 전형적인 초기산업화 패턴을 보이고 있다. 이러한 기업전략은 기술혁신체제 관점에서 기술학습을 통한 기술축적이 부족하고, 부품소재 중심으로 공급사슬을 구성하는 중소 중견기업군이 취약하여 원가절감 등 시장 경쟁력에 장애요인으로 나타났다. 이를 개선하기 위해서는 첫째, 시스템 기업은 중소 중견기업을 중심으로 부품국산화 노력을 통한 경쟁력 있는 공급사슬 구현이 시급하다. 둘째, 정부는 부품소재 중심의 원천연구에 대한 지원을 확대하여야 하며 셋째, 경쟁력 있는 국가의 기술혁신체계 구현을 위해 정부 출연연구소 및 대학을 중심으로 기술축적을 위한 방안이 시급하다. 마지막으로 초기 풍력산업의 주요 수요자가 정부 및 공공기관인점을 감안할 때, 풍력시스템의 국산화 비율을 구매 조건의 핵심 평가요인으로 채택해야 할 것이다.

This paper aims to analyse post catch-up innovation activities of Korean firms. Traditional approach focused on incremental innovation through fast catch-up process. Recently, Korean firms present new patterns of innovation activities. It includes the development of state-of-the-art frontier products in capital intensive manufacturing sector, the achievement of architectural innovation through adopting newly developed components and the creation of new market based on the basic technological capabilities. This paper attempts to formulate conceptual framework for analysing post catch-up innovation activities and to analyse stylized facts of post catch-up activities based on the case studies on technology based small and medium Korean firms.

The purpose of this paper is to analysis sectoral patterns of technological innovation in Korean manufacturing sector. Pavitt(1984) put forward a well-known taxonomy that industries three groups of industries characterized by markedly different innovative modes, namely science-based, production-intensive and supplier-dominated industries. Using Pavitt's taxonomy as a framework, we try to explain similarities and differences among sectors in the sources and impact of innovations. Based on a sample of 2,371 firms in manufacturing industry, this paper investigated its relevance to explain the sources and directions of innovative activities in Korean industries. Empirical study shows that in supplier dominated firms most process innovations come from suppliers of equipment and materials. In science-based firms product innovation is produced internally, based on the rapid development of the underlying sciences in the universities and research institutes. It also shows that production-intensive firms have a positive association between innovativeness and customer collaboration. This explanation has implications for our understanding of the sources and directions of technical changes, the formation of technological advantages at the level of both region and country.

The transformation of sector system in ICT, a prominent character in sector systems, has been paid much attention in innovation theory since Information technologies and technological environment have rapidly changed. In this context, we employ US patent data and proxy variables, measuring the basic elements for analyzing SIS and its technological characteristics in order to explore how SIS is transformed. By utilizing patent analysis, it is demonstrated that technological regimes, key links and Schumpeterian patterns of innovation have transformed drastically over last 3 decades in overall ICT sector. Consequently, our research shows clear evidence that Schumpeterian patterns of innovation have shifted from Mark I to Mark II in ICT. Our study provides a glimpse picture of dynamics of SIS since 1970 in the technological level by utilizing patent analysis.

본 논문은 온라인 커뮤니티를 통해 사용자들이 정보교류와 의사소통을 활발히 전개하여 사용자혁신 (User Innovation)을 촉진하는 사례들과 이와 관련된 현안 이슈들, 그리고 기업의 사용자혁신 활용 전략을 다루고 있다. 특히 인터넷의 보급과 확산을 통해 사용자들이 온라인 커뮤니티를 형성하고 상호 교류할 수 있는 장이 마련되어 사용자혁신이 더욱 활성화 될 수 있으므로, 휴대기기 산업에서 이러한 사례를 발굴하여 분석하였다. 특히 본 연구에서는 MP3 플레이어 산업에서 기업이 온라인 커뮤니티를 통해 고객정보를 어떻게 획득/처리/활용하는지, 그리고 스마트폰인 블랙잭 제품에서 어떤 과정을 통해 사용자혁신이 이루어지는 지를 사례연구 하였다. 본 연구의 결과는 1)온라인 커뮤니티에서 사용자의 역할과 (정보공유, 아이디어 창출, 문제해결, 정보취합, 제품테스트, 사용의견 제시, 제품홍보 등) 기업의 대응전략, 2)기업과 고객간 커뮤니케이션 패턴 (질문/불평/사용후기 및 피드백/시제품/공지 등) 특성, 3)온라인 커뮤니티 내에서 사용자간 커뮤니케이션 패턴과 현안, 4)온라인 커뮤니티 활성화를 통한 신제품개발 촉진방안 등으로 구분하여 제시되었다. 마지막으로 이러한 사용자혁신 사례를 바탕으로, 사용자혁신을 촉진하고 신제품개발과정에서 사용자의 참여를 강화할 수 있는 정책적 함의를 정리하였다. 특히 개방형 혁신이 강조되는 상황에서 사용자혁신은 개방형 혁신의 한 형태도서도 의미가 있으며, 향후 더 많은 사례연구와 실증분석이 요구된다.
