  • Aerodynamic data measured in a wind tunnel has inevitable errors due to the presence of the wind tunnel walls. These unwanted interference effects must be corrected for the wall interference free aerodynamic data. Streamline curvature effects are caused by straightening of streamlines due to wind tunnel walls. Classical Glauert's correction method that is a standard method for fixed wing aircraft is not suitable for rotary wing aircraft. In this paper, Heyson's correction method of which wake model is compatible with rotors is used to correct the rotor shaft angle as well as the dynamic pressure. The results of Heyson's method are compared with Glauert's correction method.

  • This paper presents the rotating test techniques and the results of the roating test of the small-scaled hingeless rotor system with composite paddle blades in hover and forward flight conditions. The small-scaled rotor system was designed using froude-scaled properties of full scale rotor system. Metal flexures and composite flexures were made as hub flexures by the same dynamic properties of rotor system. The rotating tests of hingeless rotor system installed in GSRTS at KARI were carried out to get lead-lag damping ratios and aerodynamic loads of the hingeless rotor system. MBA(Moving Block Analysis) technique was used for the estimation of lead-lag damping ratio. 6-components balance was installed between hub and main shaft and straingauges on blades were instrumented for the measurements of aerodynamic loads of rotor system. Tests were performed on the ground and in the wind tunnel according to the test conditions of hover and forward flight, respectively.

  • Detailed flow of a shrouded tail rotor in hover is studied by using a compressible inviscid flow solver on unstructured meshes. The numerical method is based on a cell-centered finite-volume discretization and an implicit Gauss-Seidel time integration. Numerical simulation is made for a single blade attached to the center body and guide by the duct by imposing a periodic boundary condition between adjacent rotor blades. The results show that the performance of an isolated rotor without shroud compares well with experiment. In case of a shrouded rotor, correction of the collective pitch angle is made such that the overall performance matches with experiment to account for the uncertainties of the experimental model configuration. Details of the flow field compare well with the experiment confirming the validity of the present method.

  • In this study a 3-component rotating balance, which is designed to measure the thrust (Fz) and two moment components (Mx, My) simultaneously for a rotor test jig, is designed and its performance is validated experimentally. The low voltage signal from the strain gages mounted on the balance is amplified with a rotating amplifier, which is then fed through a slip-ring unit into the data acquisition system. In order to validate the accuracy of the calibration matrix obtained from a static calibration test, an additional reaction type balance is used to measure the thrust from a model rotor simultaneously, and shows very good result. Finally, the expanded uncertainty value, which is obtained from ISO method is estimated to be $2.82\times10^{-1}$, and the balance turns out to be reliable.

  • This paper describes the structural analysis results of KARI General Small-scaled Rotor Test System (GSRTS) operated in KARI to verify operational safety. This GSRTS was developed to conduct a froude and mach small-scaled rotor test. This analysis was performed to investigate the structural Factor of Safety for the various small-scale rotor system like articulated or hingeless rotor and to check the operational capability using given operational design load. Specially, drive system has several bearings, mechanical gears, shaft, etc. and these parts must be required to achieve an operational safety. The calculation was done by using geometric data and material properties by analytical method. This rotor test system should be operated within these calculated Factor of Safety. Furthermore, the operational limitation should be defined as applied to small-scale rotor system of KUH in future.

  • An altitude control using a fuzzy controller was performed for a series of research for autonomous flight control of industrial unmanned helicopters. The 3m class gasoline engined unmanned helicopter was designed, and using the designed specifications, Takagi-Sugeno-Kang type fuzzy controller was designed. The input membership functions were generated using target altitude, altitude error and velocity of unmanned helicopter. With these membership functions, the control inputs for altitude control were calculated. These control input signal can control the main rotor's pitch and determine the velocity and altitude of the unmanned helicopter. Also, the altitude control performance of the designed fuzzy controller was evaluated by computer simulations

  • Fatigue properties of composite materials are extremely important to design durable and reliable helicopter rotor blades. However, it is very difficult to apply conventional fatigue test loads in short period. Therefore, accelerating test speed and facilitating spectrum load realization are required. In this study, we have developed a fatigue testing method that uses a resonance of simply supported beam type blade specimen. This test consists in exciting the blade specimen with a frequency that corresponds to its natural frequency. In that case, the test specimen similar to a beam fixed between two pivot points starts vibrating and is significantly deformed. Resonant fatigue tests were performed by changing exciting vertical amplitude and frequency, and S-N curves of each composite materials were successfully obtained.

  • Nowadays many peoples are using helicopter in various fields, not only military use but also common people applications such as air-measurement, photography, transportation of goods and persons, saving life and fire fighting etc. And it will be expected more popular than now. Most important part of helicopter to increasing performance and to reducing noise is rotor hub-system. Hub system consists of rotor-blade and rotor-hub. We participate to develop next-generation rotor hub system with elastomeric bearing, part of rotor hub. In this paper we introduce about the role and shape of elastomeric bearing in next-generation helicopter hub system. Then we study about bearing-material requirements and measuring methods. Finally we represent some experimental results.

  • This study describes optimization methods for adjustment of helicopter main rotor tracking and balancing (RTB). RTB is a essential process for helicopter operation and maintenance. Linear and non-linear models were developed with past RTB test results for estimation of RTB adjustment. Then global and sequential optimization methods were applied to the each of models. Utilization of the individual optimization method with each model is hard to fulfill the RTB requirements because of different characteristics of each blade. Therefore an ensemble model was used to integrate every estimated adjustment result, and an adaptive method was also applied to adjustment values of the linear model to update for next estimations. The goal of this developed RTB adjustment optimization program is to achieve the requirements within 2 run. Additional tests for comparison of weight factor of the ensemble model are however necessary.

  • The fatigue analysis is performed to avoid structural failure in aerospace structures under repeated loads. In this paper, the fatigue life is estimated for the design of tilt rotor UAV. First of all, the fatigue load spectrum for tilt rotor UAV is generated. Fatigue analysis is done for the flaperon joint which may have FCL(fracture critical location). Tilt rotor UAV operates at two modes: helicopter mode such as taking off and landing; fixed wing mode like cruising. To make overall fatigue load spectrum, FELIX is used for helicopter mode and TWIST is used for fixed wing mode. The other hand, the Kriging meta model is used to get S-N regression curve for whole range of material life when S-N test data are analyzed. And then, the second order of S-N curve is accomplished by the least square method. In addition, the coefficient of determination method is used to ensure how accuracy it has. Finally, the fatigue life of flaperon joint is compared with that obtained by MSC. Fatigue.
